Hi all

Writing this as I await recovery

Drove the car for last 8 weeks since buying it.

Never skipped a beat not once.

Driving car back from my mum's sudden loss in power car is a lot louder than normal sounded kinda nice actually.

Next thing I know I hear a clunk and rattle and the engine coughs and dies.

She won't restart and now is throwing the camshaft position sensor fault on my code reader.

Any ideas or am I right and thinking that I've now got a dead car

Sorry to hear that mate, hard to say what has happened, rocker cover off will shed some light on the situation, fingers crossed it's fixable.

1.8t?

I hope so mate. It's got fsh and has only done 69k miles in the last 14 years. I'm devastated

Keep your chin up, might not be that bad, is it a 1.8t?

Oooh, hope you get recovered quickly , hopefully there's no piston damage and all you need replaced are valves.

Right now I'd be quite happy to hit by a lorry while waiting

You ain't seen how angry I'm gonna get. And let's not go there with the other half

69,000 is no mileage for a chain to break. It may just be the sensor

No it's not it's done barely any miles either oil is clean enough to drink

Would a sensor make the noise tho

If the timing belt is intact and it's the cam chain that has snapped hopefully it will only be bent valves, best case scenario would be just the sensor but we're guessing at this point.

i think I'm more annoyed i haven't been given any warning, it started and drove fine no issues at all only rattle on the car was the pen in the glove box. it always started with the rattle on start up. went away in less than a second no issues, then all of a sudden no power 30 seconds later a rattle a loud crunch clunk noise engine dies. RIP

Isn't the S4 V8 4.2 100% chain driven? The general rule of thumb seems to be that it the rattle on start up disappears in under 2 seconds there is no need to be unduly worried? However, we're all guessing on a forum and my guess was hopeful/optimistic :chuncky:

Yea it is chain driven. Should of got the rs6 It has a belt instead

Yeah, the BBK motor is an 079-series 4.2 V8 40V, so it's chain-driven.

Not one of Audi's better engine offerings in modern times, as far as reliability goes. I would venture to say, it's one of the worst. I had a B6 S4 Convertible, let's say I didn't keep it long.

Tbf the car is lovely and the engine is peach to drive. Shame they don't do what the Honda lads did with the vtr1000 firestorm engine that had the same issues with cam shafts and stuff. They got rid of the auto tensioner and fitted a manual one which solved the whole issue. Something tells me the Audi fix isn't so simple or cheap..

Any more news on your motor , what was the fault in the end?

Hi Guys

Sorry the timing has been a little slow with my reply (pun intended)

Right essentially in a nut shell the engine was totally destroyed by the timing chain. but before i get into all the detail lets have a little back story.

The car as you know failed at low speed and cut out leaving me at the side of the road, in hindsight i should of let the handbrake off and let it roll into 70mph dual carriageway traffic.

The car was picked up the following day and taken into Midland VW in Norton Cannes who i have to say Jody and his team have been fantastic answering all questions and providing photos.

after three days of waiting the engine was out and had been stripped down(it didnt take them three days they were doing it in bits and bobs as it fitting in-between jobs). Jody informed me that the engine has in the past had some work done on its chain the work wasn't done well and not all the components were replaced which was odd considering we aren't talking much more money to replace the parts. Unfortunately this meant the plastic guide wasn't done and it was this part that had failed (hence no warning), after snapping loose from its mounting it made it was round the chain path taking out various parts as it went before finally melting onto the crankshaft gear. This took the time chain off its mounting and allowed both banks of the engine to go out of sync. This resulted in 16 valves needing to be replaced.

The engine is now making its way back into the car and i should hopefully have the car back this week, only to now have to sell her this repair has unfortunately cost money i dont have having only had the car from a private sale for 8 weeks. Still its been fun while it lasted, and i should be able to sell her easily. .

if any of you have questions or want some more details let me know, im more than happy to give out some more info!.

Oh mate, sorry to hear that. Makes it worse because it was someone doing a half assed repair/maintainence that caused it.

Sorry to hear that. Going through something similar myself.

My engine just cut out and won't start and I'm waiting for it to go into the garage. I'm concerned about there being more damage than just the guide(s).

What symptoms did you have and how much more did the extra work cost? I don't want them to even bother opening the engine up if there's a strong chance I'll get a huge bill on top for valves, etc.

I have the following codes:

17748 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
P1340 - 001 - Incor. Correlation - MIL ON
17755 - Camshaft Position Sensor 2 (G163) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
P1347 - 001 - Incor. Correl. - MIL ON
17800 - Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 2 (G163)
P1392 - 001 - Open Short to Plus
17746 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)
P1338 - 001 - Open or Short to Plus
16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
P0102 - 004 - Signal too Low

i didnt get any symptoms only a louder exhaust tone then a rattle and a bang, i had one code, Camshaft position - Time over advance.

its possible its just the sensors in your case. Does it crank at normal speed?

The advice I've had from multiple sources is that it's not just a sensor.

There was no drama at all with mine; it just cut out like there was an electrical problem and now it won't even crank. I'm hoping the ECU has restricted it rather than anything mechanical.

Thats brutal, gutted for ya. These timing chains seem to be more bother than they are worth, better off with an easy to change belt engine I recon. What are you thinking of buying next?

I'm going back jap cars and motorbikes. Every time I get another brand or spend money on a car it explodes. So getting a cheap run around

The way I see it, if you're happy to keep a car you enjoy for years, you won't get a better car for the cost of repair. As you long as you get a proper PPI done and are aware of the guide and potential cylinder wall scoring issues and buy accordingly it's worth it.

I'm just annoyed because I'd decided to upgrade to an RS4 and this problem puts that on hold.

It's an issue I didn't know about in till after I'd bought it.

Same here. Back then only the early rumblings of an issue were occurring. The extent of the problem only became clear within the last few years.

Yeah it actually wouldn't be such an issue if they had been sensible and put the chain in a more accessible place or you know used a belt......

They decided to put a V8 in an A4 engine bay. What they had wouldn't fit so they built a smaller engine for the purpose - it used timing chains to save space but they had to put them around the back to fit peripherals around the front. The theory was that the timing system would last the life of the engine and would never need servicing. In reality though the oil didn't stay in the head to pressurise the tensioners which, in turn, slap the guides which were made from a substandard material (which presumably they knew as they were revised for the B7 S4 and upgraded completely for the B7 RS4).

I'd like to think it was just a miscalculation with the guide material at least but they revised and upgraded so soon after the B6 was released - there couldn't have been many (if any) cases at that point.

I guess so. They still could of issues a recall to sort it out.
