Seems like lots of the tyre places are now offering a tyre hotel service for summer/winter tyre swaps so thinking about winter tyres as we get towards October/November.

I live in the south east, so it's hardly remote or particularly cold but we do have a baby due in the middle of January and quite honestly I'm good with spending a few quid to double my chances of getting to the hospital if the weather turns.

Two options appear to be replace my summer tyres (245/35/R19) with winter ones and keep the summers in a tyre hotel, or buy some smaller winter wheels.

Does anybody have thoughts on a suitable winter wheel size for the B9 S4?

Stock answer is 225/45/R18 95H XL M+S on 7.5J rims, there should be a sticker on the Drivers door jamb, listing all sizes available.

Typically folks go down a size for winters...

However, another option is 245/40 R18 97V XL M&S on 8J ET40 rims, which is what I've gone for on my 3.0tdi 272 (currently on 245/35 R19 summers), as we don't get a right lot of snow in the UK and the wet weather performance of the Pirelli Sottozero3 is allegedly better than the Bridgestone LM01, the Pirelli is a much newer tyre design as well. Continental Ts 810S is also good but more ££.

I got a good wheel/tyre deal from Germany, as I don't like the Audi UK wheel offering in a 18" (pg19/40 in the latest accessories guide) just too messy, but that's just my view.

I've had winters on my last two cars and it works out OK as I keep the car for ~4 years so will only need one set of summers in that time, there's two sorts of views on winters those that believe in them and those that have never tried them. I'm further up North than yourself nearer the Peak District. I then sell the old rims at the end of it.

Definitely worth it on my last car - C350 Merc..!

Oooh and I don't use a tyre hotel, just the garage and a big lock :)

You do realise that winter tyres are really for temperatures below 7c, seeing as we've had temperatures at 16c in january are they seriously worth the extra cost? Obviously it is a personal decision but I have never considered them a necessity and if it snows I either stay in in or go out in our fiesta...

Yep absolutely, there's always exceptions to the norm in warm winter days, but as most weeks I'm on the road at 05:00 temperatures are slightly colder early morning.

For me the cost difference isn't massive as over the four years I keep a car I'll still use two sets of tyres, 1x summer set and 1x winter set; as against 2x summer sets, the only extra cost for me is the depreciation on the rims, offset against the slightly cheaper winter tyres.

I'm not going out in the MX-5, and certainly did not go out in the 7 when salt is about. With work if I'm in Scotland or the Peak District then I'd like to get safely home.

Granted there's not much snow about in the UK... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi-o_njQW34
But it is wet, even at 10Deg C... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi-o_njQW34

Each to their own and I agree, yes it's a personal decision.

Just to bring this back up again, has anyone got any idea what kind of size we can go down to on S4's that will still clear the front brakes?

I can get a decent deal on some 17's with tyres but I wasn't sure if they'd fit or not...

Can't imagine you'd get 17s to clear, 18s min I'd say, that was the case with my B8.5 S4.

It looks like there's about 1" clearance between the caliper and the inside of the wheel with my 19" set... If they did fit then it would be seriously close!

Assume sticker on door jam shows different sizes for M+S tyres, mine does on SE

It looks like on the door they only go down to 18", I'm assuming that means that 17" is just that little bit too small unfortunately!

Nothing wrong with 18" (as she said last night).
Have you considered all season tyres.
Nokian Weathproof's/Michelin CrossClimates are very very good nowadays.

I think that 18" is as small as you can go on our cars now that I've looked at it a bit more...

I don't mind the thought of all season tyres in general but I'd prefer to have a set of winter wheel/tyres that I can swap out when I want. Especially as if I was sticking some winter/all season tyres on for winter this year it would be well before my current tyres were worn out so seems a bit pointless.

Found some deals for packages of wheels and tyres so maybe just order them when it gets a bit closer to the cold. :)

I am thinking of getting a set of winter wheels and tyres for my BE. On the configuration on MyAudi it says that my wheels have the "direct pressure monitoring system", so does this mean that i would need the sensors in the wheels?

I was going to go for some after market 18".
