Hello all,

I am building a fully forged BAM for my S3, I'm aiming for 330-360bhp

Now i am not an VAG expert by any means my experience is mainly in Fords, so I was wondering how necessary is a big port head for the sort of power I am aiming for

TIA

Not needed.

Of what i have read on this forum i think the small port head is good till 400 bhp then anything over that a big port head is advised. It will prob also depend on other things like what turbo ur using and other mods that will determine ur final bhp.

Not quite sure what turbo to go for atm either, I don't want anything too laggy...:cower:

You shouldn't have to worry about lag just use your gears

Not needed at that power level and arguably detrimental.

It does make me smile when people use the phrase 'fully forged' on an engine rebuild as 9 times out of 10 all they do is hone the bores and fit rods... :)

Heads will need at least the exhaust guides replacing but best to get the inlets checked anyway and you would be advised to at least replace the exhaust valves with supertech inconel valves and at least Cat Cam Gold exhaust springs...

Luckily I build engines for a living so it'll be rods, pistons, crank ground, block bore etc... :innocent::sunglasses:

Nice... :)

1.8t cranks generally don't need to be touched... not seen one in anything other than an engine thats suffered failure from oil related issues need touching tbh

Engine threw a rod probably due to overboost i mentioned in a previous thread :cower: not quite sure on extent of the damage to the crank yet :sadlike:

Something I inquired about myself prior to my hybrid build, helpful bunch which is asn advised small port would suffice which suited me as my 1.8t APY is small port stock.

Looks like you have the results to back it up as well! How does it feel at that bhp and torque??

Not as fast as I wished, you can wind it up to 170mph but certainly lacking in terms of acceleration, car is just heavy. I would be looking at big turbo if your wanting a fast s3.

In your experience at what point are the stock 2 piece valves prone to coming apart?

Are stainless 1 piece sufficient for the inlet valves?

Also are stock stem seals sufficient? (New obviously)

Stock valves fail randomly but fail they do.... typically down to worn guides so they are slapping about and on opening a valve out of curiosity it was discovered that the 'sodium filling' had disappeared leaving you with a hollow stemmed valve...

Not seen too many failures of std inlet valves but again general wear and tear apply... supertech inlets are black nitrided stainless

I use stock (elring or other) stem seals in mine...

Have you done a 0-60 run or come up against a golf r or s3 8v for a comparison I would of thought at 300 plus it wouldn't be sluggish

Depends what he's used to I guess. 420bhp felt slow to me after abit. 250bhp in the octy vrs feels about 150 lol

Ahhh, I wanted plenty of low down torque, but maybe a big turbo is the best way to go then??

Depends how big your pockets are. My "big" turbo gtx28 felt about the same as my old hybrid until it hit full boost.

I'm sure tuffty will post up his big turbo graph against a ko4 hybrid graph which is pretty telling.

As already said though, unless it's not well set up, there will be enough low down grunt for daily driving, just drop a gear if you want more poke.

...or a diesel lol

I would imagine you are used biggish turbo stuff if you build cossie motors...

The term 'lag' is hugely subjective as I am sure you know but as good as the 20v engine is its still a 1.8 so never really going to set the world alight without a little effort..

I have posted these a few times but here they are again.. my cars various dyno runs...

GT30/1.8 vs GT35/2.0 (before cams)

To get the best out of bigger turbo though you will need to go stroker so means sourcing a TFSI crank...

My build thread is fairly big but prob worth having a read from here...

Cossies are a bit all are nothing boost wise, I want something a bit more useable... the hybrid k04 looks okay but I don't want something I'm going to get bored of quickly :weary: How much boost did you run on the hybrid K04 and on the GT30??

I'll have a look through, I can see you know your stuff!

Never ran a hybrid personally... used it as a comparison as the question always gets asked and everyone gets hung up on spool and boost ;)

Hybrids generally run 22-24psi... the GT30 was a bit different as it was a log mani on 1.8 so 26-28psi to get anything out of it... was a bit of a restriction tbh plus an engine with 100k on it and new rings meant it was never going to be the best..

I had a play with a astra vxr nurburgring one, but this was before the car was mapped, so actuator pressure and I had inefficient cheap sh!t front cooler off eBay fitted which had intake temp up at 60' degrees and i still past him comfortably.

You just get used to the power, although I wasnt exactly blown away from the start, as I said car is heavy, mines 1420kg and that's with seats stripped out, replaced with buckets and me sitting in it plus half tank of fuel.

Works out around 240hp per tonne (ATF) which is fine but of course you get accustomed to that and crave more, well I certainly have.

Car is fun, gonna do another track day this year but it get ridiculously hot on track, it's almost unsuitable.
