Facelift UK RS3 Saloon/SB (400ps) Order Thread...

I wanted there to be an RS3 Saloon, I always favoured the Saloon to the Sportback.. until I owned a Sportback (I've had two already). Now there is an RS3 Saloon, as good as it looks I don't want one. Not arguing with anyone who has ordered one, but the RS3 is a 'hot hatch' and for me needs to be the Sportback I think. Plus I don't have to go stripping out in the garage to fit it in for the extra 6 inches longer (yes it's that right in my garage).

I really liked the saloon when it first came out but then seeing it at goodwood I wasn't so sure. I have an S3 at the moment, does anyone know difference in boot size/space between saloon and sportback (RS3)

I prefer the saloon. Several reasons.
1. Reminds. me of the old rs4.
2. I've always had hatchbacks and fancy a change.
3. I'm nearly 50 so a saloon looks a little less mid life crisis.
4. I think the saloon looks prettier
5. I like blue cars and the ara blue looks fantastic on the saloon, but odd on the sportback
Very true regarding number 1.

It would have to be Daytona for me, and not too fussed on black pack or Alu pack

I know I said I am okay with having to wait until March - but it’s going to get pretty lonely in this thread in the next month or so as everyone gets their cars!

No it won't be lonely - We'll just be having fun without you :haha:

Saloon is smaller than the Sportback, I don't have exact figures to give without research but it is.

In numbers the saloon is bigger, 315 liter, sportback 280 liter.
In practice, SB is easier to load when you have the height as well. But the saloon has a deeper boot. Personally, I think SB does not have much advantage. It's shorter, both the backrests and the rear window are angled so you can not load so much in height.

The cargo space would be much bigger unless the battery was so high. The rest is just frigolit. Raises the entire floor at least 10 cm.

I'm sure I've seen somewhere the Sportback was bigger. If you take the parcel shelf out, it is bigger and with the seats flat in pretty sure it's bigger?

The Saloon has the bigger boot (volume wise), but you can only fit lots of smaller items. The Sportback will fit, all be it one, larger case.

Having seen both the saloon and sportback in the flesh, have to say the Saloon looks very much like an S3, particularly from the side. For me Audi hasn't gone far enough to differentiate the two.

Saloon has a little less headroom in the rear over the Sportback.

Sure I read somewhere the Sportback was bigger overall.

I really like the saloon but ended up ordering a SB due to the flexibility of the larger boot opening - just the odd thing I may want to put in the back the saloon would limit me - not that its an every day event. The wife said the saloon just looks like a rep mobile too lol

I have seen some press sheet, some have written 335 liter and other 280 liter on SB. I think 280 is the correct one... (Battery on the boot) and RS3 SB have a smaller boot then S3 SB 340 liter. Or maybe we have bigger battery here in Sweden?

Everything is about what kind of things you intend to load. It's soft little bags or big lumpy luggage. Even if you remove the parcel shelf, personally do not think you can load so much in height. It's pretty narrow. If you don't have passanger on the back and have seat flat in, SB is much easier to load and bigger.

Yeah for me its the seats down and load if I needed it - saloon would limit me.

The things I have been able to fit in my A3 sedan boot with the seats down have stunned me in the past...

Including:

A dining table and two long 2.5seat benches in one go.

65Inch UHD TV in box.

150kg worth of wood panels measuring up to 1600mm long by approx 900mm wide.

2.8m long wooden poles.

and much more, but those are the bulkiest things I have fit.

To me the RS3 boot looks identical, not sure if we lost any height due to battery but otherwise it all looks the same to me.

Saloon and Sportback both have plenty of rear-seat space for adults and there’s a decent boot – especially if you choose the Sportback, which has 335 litres of space.

@akeithj - Well I was still up so I thought I'd check :)

Now showing as in "Quality control" :rightmagnify:

snap :semi twins: at this rate it's going to arrive just before I go on holiday which will drive me mad

Just managed to find the RS3 price list and sportback is 335l seats up and saloon is 315l seats up.

Seats down for SB is 1175l whereas saloon is only 770l

I reckon if we're lucky and don't get a problem waiting for a ship, it'll be a month from this week......

That's maybe not too bad, probably only a couple of weeks sitting in the pound awaiting my return. I think I will have to stop checking progress when I am away :hopelessness:

I hate to see you in distress and would happily take your place on any holiday :sunglasses:

That's very kind of you, it's nice to see how fellow RS owners help each other out :friends:

Alrity, so I had a decent long test-ride in the new FL RS3 from Audi Camberley, Surrey.
(who had a £90,000 RS5 in there !!)

I took along my sports car loving 19yr old son for a second opinion.

First the pics:
Rs33
Rs32
Rs31

Looks:
Well, I have to be honest. That is the worst red I have ever seen. I believe it was Catalunya. It wasn't just that it was orange, it had no real lustre to it.
Wheels - OMG - ****** awful. Resemble the finish of the hub caps that you used to get from Halfords in the 90s.
The back is not great and it would have to be a sportsback for me..

I have to say here, the salesman was in COMPLETE agreement. They had no choice on the car that they got. He said that they usually get fully specced up cars so they 'look' better at first impression but this had **** all. He was peeved as he knows this combination was not going to help sales.

Inside:
A real highlight.. The digital dash is fantastic. Almost in itself it is a reason to upgrade or just get it retrospectively installed.
It had the standard seats which were actually really nice AND it had full electrics including lumbar support. That is good.
The rest of the interior looked the same, which I do like, and actually prefer to the R6 interior (which I went in next :) )

Driving:
First off.. he did say that it did not have the sports exhaust.. the car had ****** all added.
I was prepared for this and told him that I had heard that the car is not as aurally nice as the PFL.
Started it up... Had a little crack, nice sound! I drove 100 yards to the traffic lights and said "This sounds fine".
However, as the car settled I realised that the tone was SIGNIFICANTLY worse. That glorious engine note had gone and even allowing for the non-sports exhaust (remember that my RS3 had a standard exhaust first so I can honestly compare) the car was very disappointing on the sound front. I did get some occasional pops on the upshift but ****** all on the downshifts, even violent ones, even when nicely warmed up.

Speed wise, he let me do full accelerations in all gears including from a standing start and it felt exactly the same to me. Exactly. Certainly no faster and I did allow for the lack of noise. Of course , this car had down ****** all mileage so it is actually not a fair comparison and this also might help the note of the engine and standard exhaust.

Summary:
NO WAY I would buy this car. No way I would upgrade the PFL to this car. I would not even get this car - period. It has lost the most important magic to me. Next year I will look at an RS6 or hold out for a FL A45.
Very disappointed. What on earth have they done.

Disclaimer:
This was a brand new car. I don't like new cars anyway so I am a bit biased. I don't like modern tech taking away the rawness of car. Only the sound of the marvellous PFL RS3 and its general speed makes me a fan. I don't actually like the 'feel' of the car.
As a first sports car for those who have never had one before, say going from a Toyota Yaris, this new FL RS3 will be epic.
The only thing that I noticed was better was, I would say, a 10-20% better feel on turn in. Also, the car was generally smoother throughout the rev range.

I really need to get myself a test drive before making a firm decision whether to 'upgrade' from my PFL. The noise is a big thing for me. Sure, it's going to be 10% faster but if it's at the sacrifice of the noise I'm not sure I'd be happy and would rather take a risk and map mine. The only other plus point would be the improved handling. Even the virtual dash is something I'm not bothered with...looks like a computer game to me. Never say never, though.

I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it, having been a long time follower like most of us.

Might not even be 10% faster @D0C as that carwow vid has same quarter mile time for the FL as the PFL has.

Does it sound like this in the UK?
The PFL let's out a loud crack on the upshift then pops and bangs on the over run. None of that in that clip. As I said before though, perhaps a more "classy" sound and some will prefer it. For me though the old noise is what makes the car.

It felt no faster whatsoever. It did 'drive' better though. Slightly better pick up, certainly a bit smoother. More refined - which can be a positive for some, negative for others.

Contrary to my previous belief , I did actually like the Alcantara in the 9 and 3 position.

Been reading this thread for a while and decided to join :)

I have my car on order, due October 1st.

RS3 Sportback
Nardo
Red Calipers
Comfort & Sound
Folding Mirrors
Super Sport Seats
Privacy Glass
Sports Exhaust

I was going to go for the gloss black pack, but seeing a nardo saloon at the dealership with the standard silver it actually look really good i thought, I know lots don't like it. Looking forward to it anyway, I went from an S3 to an S5 and definitely prefer the 3!!

RS cars need to be full on banzai rather than "refined" imho. I do hope Audi aren't losing the plot here as new RS5 seems to be more refined too.

The old one can make as much noise as it wants but it will be quickly overtaken by its new younger brother who doesn't need to shout about it.

The sedan that I test drove got enough comments from the neighbours, the PFL would be too much in my neighbourhood! :)

The consensus in the media is the RS5 is a bit disappointing, the RS3 has had mostly rave reviews, so that’s good news. What happens with the RS4 will be interesting to see, I’m expecting something more like the RS5.

Plot lost. More refined.

Is this not typical of sports car development over the last two decades though? It is hardly a shock.
In attempt to make the cars more accessible to the masses, safer in crashes and meeting all sorts of ******-up restrictions they lose their soul.
There are exceptions made by Porsche. Ferrari and Lamborghini but they then cost even more..

I'd pay more for a stripped out new "Audi Quattro" (a SWB RS7?) special but the masses will want the more refined cars.

Isn't that "Comfort" setting on the new, super improved FL RS3? :blow:

Super improved is the correct term and these magazines have finally began to write all the good things about this new car.

Love autocar's from page.....'Audi RS3...Fun at last Audi'

I can't wait now.

I seem to recall you were a big fan of the PFL?! FL does seem to be an improvement on the handling front, however.
