Thanks DTS
Really enjoyed the trip, but we all have decided we would fly next time. Mainly because of the loss of days in LG. We broke the trip at Strasbourg for 2 nights, it took us approx 7 1/2 hours from the tunnel including a few stops. Went through Belgium, and Luxembourg mainly as no tolls, cheap fuel in Luxembourg and only 30 odd mile longer. If you download the Michelin app it details the routes and toll costs, very useful.
The trip to LG from Strasbourg was another 7 hours, and this included the trip over the Alps at Gotthard, and stopping for the views.
There is a little museum at the top (didn't visit) but stopped at Cafe bit further down the road, the photo above was taken there.
The trip through Switzerland is amazing, stunning scenery and lots of tunnels , note that at the border you need a special sticker (vignette) at the border which costs €40. The trip from the pass to LG is about another 90 minutes, and another £15 ish in tolls, the drive around Milan was busy, and the drivers like to tailgate. This is a problem as with no rear view mirror (full boot), you are using the passenger mirror to judge the distance and speed, whilst watching out for them to try and cut across you to the fast lane.
Sat Nav is fab, and learn to listen what she says. Also nice to see all the border country info popping up and the speed limits etc.
That said she ( called Sally lol) did let us down on the home trip trying to jump the queue to Gotthard tunnel on way home, but that was because whatever talks to it, didn't tell her the junction was closed and resulted in slight detour back down to where we started lol
My legs started to really ache the second day, but I have an auto and spent most of the time using the cruise to speed up and slow down, but apart from that really glad I (we) did it.
North we drove to an hour north of Strasbourg, so the trip to Ipres the next day was shorter.
Need any more info let me know.
