Facelift RS3 Genuine Secondary Cat Bypass Pipes

They've never mentioned it to me but I guess could have logged it on the "system" ...

I'm not sure whether to be scared out of doing it or not :/ I can see aftermarket exhausts being popular for the FL.

Warranty doesn't really work like that, you can't just fit OEM RS3 ceramic brakes and expect Audi to foot the bill if something goes wrong, when you pay for an option at factory order time the liability for warranty is included in the option price etc. This is why factory speed delimiter costs so much :)
I thought you could bypass the limiter in 6th anyway? Agree with most of what you say, but still think £1000 to remove the limiter in 7th is massively taking the pi55!

They can :) You can walk into the dealership and order an R8 v10 engine if you like, they will give you it. The Decat pipes are not applicable to your cars chassis number, Audi can only fit parts/accessories to your car that are applicable to your VIN. They can supply whatever you want though :)

The decat pipes yes are made for an RS3 but the bottom line is if they did not come fitted with the car consider it a modification and your warranty for the drivetrain null and void. You pay to play.

At the end of the day these Decat pipes are not a genuine dealer accessory, they are parts off of an RS3 designed for X market of car, not UK market. If an Audi dealer was to agree to fit these pipes they'd be snookered if they were scrutinised as they are technically committing fraud by increasing the emissions of the car, and we all know how safe VAG are playing it just now don't we ;)

The two secondary catalysts are not "noise suppressors" or anything like that, they are 300 cell catalysts each. Their purpose is to reduce the emissions of the car. Trust me, there are far cheaper ways to suppress the noise.

What you say is factually correct, yes.

In reality though, chances are these Audi stamped bypass pipes will be completely fine without affecting your warranty. Just think about it logically for a minute, you take your car into your dealership with a leaking engine coolant hose or a dodgy alternator, they are going to fix your car and not even look at your exhaust setup. Even if they did, chances are (again) that the mechanic working on your car isn't going to notice the bypass pipes. Even if he thought something was amiss at that particular section of the exhaust, he would wander off, have a look, see the 4 rings stamped into the bypass pipes and carry on changing the alternator. He does not know the exact factory setup on the hundreds of different Audi models and variants that are up on his ramps.

There is a lot of unnecessary scaremongering on car forum sites. Although what you say is probably factually correct, the reality is, 99.9% of dealers wouldn't bat an eyelid at bypass pipes. You would also have to question the legalities of having say a Mechatronic unit failure on your S-Tronic box and having bypass pipes fitted being the reason for a rejected Mechatronic replacement. Even with engine failure, the bypass pipes are downstream of the engine and in no way effects the running of the engine. Emissions perhaps, engine operation, no. That's why chances are 'you'll be fine'. In the event of an engine failure anyway, it would take 15mins to unbolt and bolt the standard pipes back in if you were really concerned.

How about fitting RS wheels to an S or vice versa, surely the same logic would apply to warranty claims? You would forego all drivetrain and suspension warranty, brakes, driveshafts, transmission, shocks etc as it never left the factory like that. RS wheels may be heavier, they may be bigger. How about brake pads or tyres? You could fit stickier tyres that provides more grip. More grip = more stress on components.

Where do you stop with it? A bit of common sense needs to be applied.

Again, yes, what you say reference the secondary cat bypass pipes being actual catalysts is true yes. However, they are in effect just 'noise suppressors' to the customer. Removing them does not effect emissions enough for you to fail an MOT, removing them does not offer a performance benefit, removing them does increase exhaust noise volume though.

Personally, I'll see what happens when I get my car. From the videos, I think the facelift exhaust setup sounds perfect from factory. I'm 33 now, some may see that as 'old' I still think I'm fairly young but I've grown up and now past the stage of thinking overly loud exhausts are 'cool'. A video I posted up a few weeks ago of an RS3 sounding like a machine gun through a tunnel was utterly ridiculous, it sounded like a loud chav car to me. At 23, I probably thought that was 'cool' fast forward 10yrs, I just think the owner of that car is a bit of a loud show off. If it's not loud enough or needs that little bit more to give it a bit more depth/character then these bypass pipes will probably do the trick.

I'll probably go down the TTE625 path at some point in the next 12 months but having a screaming loud exhaust, nope, not a chance. The car needs to keep an element of class and sophistication. It's actually embarrassing dropping the kids off at school or dropping the missus off at work and turning up like a loud boyracer, everyone just stops, stares and thinks "di*khead". Exhausts can cross a fine line in my opinion, it's a tarted up A3 not a Lamborghini Huracan at the end of the day so be sensible.

Not sure this is quite true to be fair.

On my RS6, the limiter cut in at 167mph in 6th/7th/8th gear before I had it tuned. It's supposed to cut in at 155mph but is that 155mph speedo or GPS? It's certainly not speedo. Even on an old S3 8V I had a few years back, I managed to see 165mph on that before the limiter kicked in irrespective of the gear the car was in.

I don't think the 155 limiter actually exists on any Audi car, it's at least 10mph higher than that on the speedo from what I have found.

Audi 174mph limited option is a waste of money for sure. No point in the UK anyway but even if there was and you were wanting to go on a top speed run you would be better asking a tuner to remove the limiter for you at a fraction of the cost. Yes, I know, warranty etc but if I was really wanting to go silly speeds, I'd probably not want to be limited by the 174 limiter either.

It will sound way better than the S3 anyway just perhaps not quite as good as the old one. You might not hear it though as it seems the FL will leave us in its dust ;)

:lmfao: Good point, leave all you slow coaches behind ;) Nah, we will see when they start to arrive.

Mate of mine owns a RSQ3; he was following me last night when I decided to boot it to get home quick. He sent me a text later commenting that the exhaust sounded amazing! Not in the least bit chavvy Leo ;)

For sure, the PFL sounds lovely Tx, I just don't really get the hysteria about the FL exhaust though. Going by the video comparisons, it doesn't sound as nice as the PFL but it certainly still has a lovely exhaust note for a standard car. Who knows, these decat pipes may make it more like the PFL exhaust.

I was on about the video of the machine gunning RS3 in the tunnel that I posted a few weeks back. That was clearly modified as for my ears anyway it sounded too much and too over the top.

That car was definitely modified. The standard car with sports exhaust pops and crackles but not like that car did. That was way OTT for my liking.

Agree with you there on the exhaust loudness comment - and I'm 47 !!

Just ordered one for my RS3 limo, around €64,00. My warranty will remain intact they told me, will post results when it's mounted!

To protect yourself, I'd ask for that in writing from them

It's amazing what folk in car dealerships will say to sell an item.........

Ye it's not like I never bought a car or something, and that I have a trustful relationship with my dealer for every car I ever bought.

OT: It seems after the parts manager filled in my chassis number the parts are already installed on my car. It's a fully packed car apart from the ceramic breaks. It might be that this only counts for the netherlands, I really don't know.

its put on hold, in a few days they gonna install custom carbon parts for the car and they will check it just to be sure. If they notice an error was made in the system they will order the bypass pipes

Hm that is strange! Get underneath and see if you have two cat's near the engine?

COOL! I just went down and checked under my car. I dont have the secondary cats at all on my car, which is also equipped with the RS Sports suspension.

So, cars in Australia dont have them it seems. Hooray!

My GCC spec car has the secondary cats as well.

Both sound great and both are loud.
But in this video I actually think the FL (AUS= without cats) sounds better and a sound I'm looking for. It has a deeper more exclusive sporty tone. Compared to the old one which sounds more raspy in a way like it's missing some mufflers.

The FL isnt as loud, 110% it is not as loud.

The FL does have tone but 99% of us on here prefer the aggression of the old exhaust! I'd much prefer the PFL.

Yes, you're right.
I should've written: Both cars are loud compared to an A3.

Happy then to be one of the 1% here that prefer the deeper tone of the new one :relaxed:

Yes they are loud compared to your average car, I'm hoping it will be louder than my S3 but I doubt that with the centre box delete I have. My S3 will be going 4-6 weeks before the RS arrives, so until then I will be in a 1.3 Diesel Corsa (girlfriends), which should do the trick to appreciate the RS when I get in it.

I get what you mean, the tone is nice and I'd be more than happy with it.. if there was more volume.

The volume is fine man. Its a pretty loud car. Its most definitely louder than an S3! you would need an S3 with full exhaust to be louder than this car no doubt about it.

My garage is directly under my lviing room floor and this car shakes my whole house when its idling in my garage. Its definitely a really nice deep tone. More than that its an incredibly refined sound overall.

The only thing I think people may genuinely complain about is less pops on decel and downshift. I dont like those as much anyway and I am really happy with my exhaust as is, I wont be changing anything. The pops and mumbles that are there are quite nice and tasteful.

Perhaps reserve judgement until you have driven a FL RS3 without 2ndary cats?

I dont have the cats so thats obviously my opinion based on ownership of a car without them.

That's alright then, the main reason we pay the premium is the noise. Yes it's faster, but I haven't bought it because it's faster and several times I've had to remind myself it is faster. I'm sure it will handle sharper than the S3, looking forward to experiencing it because although I drove an S3 before the last time I drove an RS3, I haven't driven an RS since I bought my S3.

My S3 with the centre box delete can be loud on times, I've had some evil looks haha. My garage is built into the house too, the wall on the other side of it shakes on a cold start.

I'm trying to forget the pops and bangs, they were just hilarious in the PFL. The attraction will be the noise through the rev range rather than pops and bangs.

I haven't really heard one yet, sadly. I had a really moody salesman let me sit in it after I nagged the girl on redemption, but he wouldn't start it. I heard then the next day (same moody salesman, who looked annoyed to see me) about to pull one into the showroom. I stood behind it with a huge grin on my face (forgot to record in the excitement) but he left it in comfort and made a point of being as quiet as possible, cruel guy :( Definitely not a car guy, he hasn't made eye contact with me since.. I've been there 4 times in a week to look at them.

Damn, sounds like a salesman with no car passion! He should have no place in a premium car dealership.

I had half the dealership ogling over my car and excited to see various aspects when I picked it up since it was the first RS almost fully specced and they all thought it looked really mean in the color combo I had. The dealer demo cars were all pretty standard so they were all checking out the carbon bits etc.

I still think the car is plenty loud. My wife drove it the other day and from inside the house I could hear her until she was at least a few streets away since she drives pretty spirited. No mistaking that 5 cyl sound either!

Yep correct! When he came out with the keys to show me inside, he had one hell of a face on.. I don't know how you can't be excited by it.

The one car had been at the dealer a day and hardly anybody knew it was there, I'd be all over it! I asked to start it yesterday, but they said they couldn't because the battery chargers are fed from the floor up into the engine bay (I saw them do this) which is fair enough and a good reason to not start them. Just a shame they didn't make it a little more enjoyable when they had to move them.

I'm looking forward to hearing one. The dealership I'm speaking of, I didn't buy the RS from this time. When the dealer I've ordered from gets one, I shall be sure to make sure I get given the keys to have a look around and start it up.

Woops, I was wrong.
Lifted the car and I don't have the secondary cats either.
20170819_143842dasdk.jpg

So, gcc spec cars don't have them either I guess.

Visited the local Audi dealer this morning to see if they had a FL in as I'm still debating whether to move change mine. They didn't. But when leaving and gently accelerating down their drive a young lad heard the car and tapped his Dad on the shoulder to point out the RS3. Still in two minds given how good the PFL sounds and the fact it still looks the part.

There has to be somewhere local with one for you to see? It seems to be the larger centres getting them. The car looks great, but I still love the PFL. I think the sound will depend on how often you have the windows down in yours in hooligan mode, for whether you will miss it or not. You never know, you might adjust : think it has a better tone in person. I am still desperate to hear one myself!

What are those 2 "boxes" near the back of the car though? Perhaps they have just moved location as mine were more towards the middle of the car eg PFL.
