Exhaust beeping noise

Hi Guys,

My car is currently at Audi as I want them to look at the beeping noise I am getting from my exhaust when I change from comfort to dynamic. I've been told it's the actual servo unit but the only way to rectify is to replace the whole backbox. Has anyone else had the same symptoms and had this replaced by Audi? They currently have 2 other RS3s in their dealership and are telling me this is normal but I know that it isn't.

Your comments will be appreciated as I'll forward this to them upon the replies

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan,

It's normal. It's the motors operating the valves, all are the same. Do it while the car is off, does it every time.

Never heard mine beep?

If you listen to this video, it is the chirping noise you hear when this car selects dynamic

110% normal :) Mine close occasionally when the ignition is off, like when I open the door back up they close.

Interesting, some don't have this noise at all. I'll let it slide then

It is normal, but you'd have to be listening to hear it over the 5 pot. Keep in mind that when switching modes the valves don't instantly switch 100% of the time, because of the silly way Audi have it said up to open and close even when in Dynamic. I've had it before where they don't open/close till you pull off.

Can you reduce the noise? I've been told to grease it?

I don't think there is a noise to be reduced really, unless if you are getting a creaking. A creaking is a different noise and yes they have been greased before. The electronic beep is the motor. Depends on your sort of noise, if it's just a beep like that video then it's the motor and normal.

I took mine into Listers in Solihull a month ago because of this. They said it was normal. I can hear it in traffic sometimes without changing drive mode and at stand still when changing into/out of dynamic.

Update on this. I took the car into Stratford-Upon-Avon Audi and they disagreed with Solihull, said the beeping was only supposed to happen when you change modes, not during driving. Replaced backbox under warranty (£1400 part!) and all is good again.

Seriously? It does change, when you pull off the valves shut! They open at idle, as soon as you move they close again until 3500rpm.. even in Dynamic! Audi have stuffed themselves up there. I can understand if you are sat dead still in traffic (just at idle) and it kept beeping.

100%...In car parks the car sounded like a really **** ice cream van with all the beeping going on. coasting at 10mph it was beep, beep, beep. Sorted now though. I still get the beeps on mode change and when pulling off, but can't hear them at any other time. Maybe it was the solenoid that was bust, either way, whatever they did solved it....cant believe the cost though.

Oh that's fair enough then, ice cream van comment made me laugh haha!

It was more than likely the valve motor, didn't warrant a £1400 backbox but at least it wasn't your bill to foot ;)

Open all the time in 1st apparently but yes closed until 3500 ish in all other gears. At idle just the left valve is open which is why no noise from the right.

Strange how they just have one valve open at idle. The S3 closes in first, assumed the RS would be the same.

The FL is different, the valves seem to be open most of the time and at lower speeds. It seems to have lost the 'bark' on cold start before the valves shut :/

I think my valve remote will be going on it very soon after collection......
Part of me feels like I need to give it a chance, but I know it will just sound better with them open all the time.

Anybody else had this recently??
I had my exhaust changed from audi roughly 500 miles ago and recently started noticing the cold start rattle again and also constant beep noises around exhaust area when coasting around 10mph or below.
Should this be covered through warranty?

The beeping noise is just a vibration coming from the valves. I had the same thing in my focus RS which uses the exact same valves. Sounds like an electronic beep from inside the car but it is infact a vibration through part of the valve mechanism. In the end just unplugged the valves and used a blanking plug on them. I had the same thing driving at slow speed, it would beep like crazy as the valves are opening and closing. In short the design of these valves are terrible and we are better off with a valveless system.

I never had this issue before i had the exhaust replaced by audi, but I’ve booked the car in with them to look into this as i dont really want to disconnect the valves. Hopefully they can rectifying or just replace the back box as I’ve read online!!

Never heard any beeping from my exhaust.
It does appear these faults are not generic to everyone...i.e squeaking brakes, beeping exhaust, steering wheel not straight, flaking exhaust etc.

The only one i have is those dam rusty rear hubs! Lucky me.

I reckon Audi have a problem with their assemblers in Germany !! Or its it Hungary for the saloon.

Would of thought audi would be more consistent but guess not!

I do get the cold start rattle but that apparently according to Audi is what its supposed to do.

Which audi said that to you? As they are lying, it isnt supposed to. When i newly had the new exhaust fitted by audi i had no rattles or anything.

Now the left one has a cold start rattle, and its always beeping. Never used to beep with old exhaust.

Ive realised the more you give car in to audi, more they ruin it!

Just an update for those that might have same issue..

Took car back to dealers and they’ve confirmed the constant beep noises isn’t normal and is a faulty flap causing the issue.

Just waiting on technical team in Milton Keynes to approve the go ahead as my back box was replaced once already around a month ago!!

I had my exhaust replaced a week or so ago because one of the valves was squeeking as it opened and closed. It also had a fault code stored relating to the mechanical operation of one of the valves, which might have helped push them into the decision to replace it.

How long did it take them to order the new back box and replace it?

They got the new exhaust within a week. The longest delay was waiting for a courtesy car.
