Just wanted to post on here first to get a few opinions before booking my car in with Audi to get looked at, with a recent issue I'm having with my gearbox.

Quick background, my S3 is only 4 months old with just under 2000 miles on the clock, new FL model with new 7 speed gearbox. It's my first auto car so apologies if some of what I'm mentioning is classed as normal.

Main issue I'm having is ocasionally when setting off in manual mode and going to change from 1st to 2nd gear as it physically changes it makes what seems like quite a loud clunk (not sure if it can be heard from the outside) also the car seems to jolt slightly. This happened today as I was leaving work, only at fairly low speed and not harsh acceleration! Haven't had any error messages pop up on the virtual cockpit or anything though...

Also I've noticed when in manual mode again if you change down from say 3rd to 2nd it registers the change and the revs alter but what I can only describe as not having fully changed to that gear until you start to accelerate which can make it quite jerky as you apply the power. However, I've noticed this since owning the car and presumed this was just a STronic thing.

Any advice would be appreciated before booking it into the dealers :footy:

Personally I've found if it's cold and you change from 1st to 2nd in manual it doesn't like it too much, was the same in the R32 as well - will change smoothly in D but if you change it yourself it isn't always smooth (as I say, before it's up to temp anyway)

Anything you notice untoward when the car is cold, don't do it IMO. I've found it a few times, gearbox very clunky and slow when cold and I drive gentle. If the car is fine when warm, assume there isn't a problem.

My gearbox has good and bad days, mine was violently slotting from 2nd to 3rd a couple of weeks ago. It was really concerning and could almost hear a clunk, but the next day it had gone and drove spot on. It's the same as the pops, some days they are better than others. I do think the gearbox has moods ;) Luckily 9/10, it remains ok!

I never change from 1st to 2nd. In manual mode it's always too jerky.... Plus 1st and 2nd... Rev out very quickly , always move away in D..... Till 3rd then traffic permitting go through the gears manually..... Or stick it in S mode for quick... Off the mark.... occasions.... then change back to D mode.... There's nowt wrong with yer box

moral of this story (thread)....try not to jerk off before you are fully warmed up lol (sorry couldn't resist!!!!)

Especially with a dry clutch box....too much friction... Ergo Less effort in play with a wet clutch..... Lol

Thanks guys, you've put my mind at ease. Cars under warranty anyway so any issues I'll be covered anyway but always useful to check. I must admit I've been using manual quite a bit more since I've done the first 1k miles, just tended to leave it in drive before that so maybe that's why I hadn't noticed it before :courage:

Once it's warmed up stick it in manual and you'll have lovely quick smooth changes from 1st to 2nd, at slow enough speeds 2nd to 1st sounds nice with a warm engine and in dynamic (just under 3k and change to 1st, will go up to about 4k and give some nice pops)

The false change you speak of is normal, my car does it too.

THIS!!!

The gearbox' have characteristics, they can be clunky sometimes, and they can make physical sounding clunks believe it or not when its in D and even more so in Manual. I would worry slightly if it was in economy or comfort however.

When you take it to Audi if you cant demonstrate the very intermittent noise then all they can do is scan it, if you've had no warnings on your VC then its almost certain they wont be able to fault it.
