Hey guys, I am brand new here. Finally got my RS3 (2016 plate) and she is AMAZING! Having had the Golf R32 and the R, the RS3 is just next level.

I am starting this new thread as I have a few queries I hope you experts can answer :)

1) Anyway, reason I am here is because the other day after a drive (it was a rainy day), I was looking at the back of the car, above the right exhaust pipe, and noticed some sort of dripping. So was not sure if it was some sort of leak, I think it was just water, and it eventually stopped - but thought this can't be right as a car of this quality surely should drain properly?. I did not notice any wear or tear on closer inspection, so hoping this is normal.

2) I noticed the left exhaust pipe when gearstick is in sport mode makes all the noise - the right pipe is pretty much silent, and even when putting my hand close to it I feel nothing, but left one is definitely breathing, so I just wanted to confirm this was all normal as it makes no sense, both should be making noise, the more noise the better, and dual noise would be awesome!

3) I also please need some clarification with Sport Mode on the gearstick and Dynamic Mode? I thought this was the same thing?. I usually drive with the gear set to S, yes I know it drinks lots of fuel, but this is where I seem to get the noise, when in D mode on gearstick, it's pretty docile and too quiet. I have only once had this popping sound you all talk about (engine was roasting), and that was after a long drive on quiet streets, so is there another way to get this popping sound without having to take her out horsing her?.

Drive select is set to individual with the following settings:

Engine/gearbox = DYNAMIC
Suspension control = AUTO
Steering = AUTO
Engine sound = DYNAMIC

Is that correct or should I have drive select as DYNAMIC?. The Audi salesman who had an S3 himself told me the above were the best settings. What if the car was set to COMFORT but the gearstick was put into S - would it still make the awesome noise?. Probably a silly question, but what if you put an RS3 without the Sports Exhaust/Dynamic Package into S mode on gearstick (would it have some sort of increased noise), or is there no S mode without the upgraded exhausts?. I presumed an RS3 without the sports exhaust would be the same as Drive mode on a RS3 with the Sports Exhaust?.

4) On start-up the car makes 2 sets of noises:

a) A nice sporty noise, sort of a prolonged noise from the Sports Exhaust, but during this few second period I feel the car is not responsive, I can't really put the foot down until it settles, it can sometimes be up to 10 seconds before the noise stops then everything feels normal and I feel I can put the foot down and drive off, and I don't mean flat down, I just mean general driving with gearstick in D mode, hard to explain really, but hoping it's normal.

b) A mechanical sounding noise of moving parts, again hard to explain but sounds like something is twisting and turning, the noise stops after a few twists and turns. Could be the suspension?.

I have an Audi warranty, so I am sure if something was wrong they'd fix it, I just can't be ***** with the hassle.

5) Lastly, in this thread here - http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/confused-on-dynamic-mode-exhaust.260569/ - the original poster said - "if you're in dynamic mode and you switch the engine off, then switch it back on, the car is no longer in dynamic mode! Even though it states it's still in dynamic" - the second poster replied - "You may have to get out lock/unlock the car to reproduce the issue of not being back in dynamic mode." - I am unsure what this means, is this an issue, or something I'd need to manually change back to Dynamic every time I start the car?.

Aside from this, I love the car! And I cannot wait to get the new model in a year or so, as I cannot believe the 2016 model has no Apple Car Play, and no progressive indicators. Makes no sense, as I have seen 2015 Audi's with the progressive indicators.

Thanks so much in advance for any advice.

RS369.

Exhaust valves are open on left pipe only at idling revs. Upon moving away it then closes until about 3k revs then both sides open up. That is why it is VERY loud after 3k!

If you leave the car in dynamic and turn off engine when you start it again the mode is dynamic but noise etc is not. Need to cycle the modes back round to dynamic every ignition cycle! Crazy fools at Audi ;)

Haha that is nuts, but I am always set to individual as above, with engine sound and engine/gearbox to dynamic - so I need to change this every time I start the car?. What about if I put gearbox to S mode?. Thanks :)

No S mode won't do it, need to cycle around.

So what is the cycle set to on start up? Comfort?. And if you do S mode on start up without cycling round, what mode is that then as it still sounds good. But so glad I found this thread, as every time I cycle it back to individual mode, I get the snap crackle and popping :) I noticed when doing this cycle that S mode is the default.

It took me a while to figure all this out when I got my RS3.

I have found that for more drama whilst driving and being a real hooligan :) I start the car up, cycle round to Dynamic (or Individual with your settings) then put the car in 'S'. I accelerate in 'S' and I then use the down-paddle for all down-shifts which brings on the mads pops, then slip it into 'S' again. I rarely use the upshift paddle... I just love the deepness and pops of of the auto upshifts in 'S'.

I got confused when I saw this post, as I thought I wrote it, as it's exactly what I have been doing lol! When slowing down and gear goes to S2, I wait a couple of seconds then down-paddle to M1 and then that is when you get the best pops and bangs. Also the warmer the car is I find the louder the pops. I also noticed if you stick it into N and do a little revving, at about 3000 RPM when you stop revving, you will get some lovely sounds, but this is coming from a different location than the down gear pops. So when revving in N while driving, or while stopped, it sounds like the pops are coming from the rear, but when driving and down-paddling to M1, the pops come from nearer the front. Does that sound about right? :)

I am starting to think the best sound of all is when you accelerate in 'S' in 2nd or 3rd at the 3800 - 4000 mark, the rumble followed by the up-fart.

It is like playing a musical instrument. I often leave it hovering it around that area and accelerate and back-off just to hear it.
Symphony on AuDi Major.. lovely jubbly.

Does anyone have "Hold Assist"? I am still trying to figure out how to use it - initially I thought it meant if you were at traffic lights and you had hold assist on then the car would not move unless you pressed the accelerator, but it seems the car holds regardless of wether or not I have "Hold Assist" activated. If I do activate it, what happens? Can I drive it around as normal when activated? I fear I will wreck something if I drive hard with "Hold Assist" on lol! I have tried to find videos on YouTube, but no luck.

Yes it's a fantastic feature. Think of it like this, when it isn't in use then you'd have to keep your foot on the brake to stop the car moving forwards (in an S-Tronic), as the car will creep with no brake applied.

With hill hold assist on, you should have the red indicator underneath the button on. Drive with it on all the time, it doesn't do anything until you apply the brake. It is activated by a 'firmer' press of the brake. So you can pull to a stop without it activating if you use the brake very lightly, but apply pressure and you will see a green handbrake light appear on the dash. It is the same light as when your handbrake is on, but illuminates green instead and the green indicates that HHA is activated. HHA doesnt apply the handbrake, it keeps the brake servos on lightly to hold the car in place. Then it also automatically turns on the handbrake, if you turn off the ignition or open the drivers door (engine running or not), then you will hear the handbrake coming on and the indicator goes red. Then whether the HHA or handbrake is active, apply gentle throttle and the car releases automatically.
For this reason, it is also good because the handbrake operates less in its lifetime. In theory the handbrake should then only ever be on when the car is switched off. The motorised handbrake makes me somewhat nervous with a manual at least, one day it isn't going to work and I don't like leaving cars held on the gearbox.

It is a great tool and not to be done without on an automatic car for £75. My friend has it on his S3 but never uses it, I literally have absolutely no idea why because it is great and takes me a while to get used to a car without it now. You never have to touch the handbrake button, it does it all on its own basically. I occasionally manually turn off the handbrake when pulling out of my garage, so I can control the speed with the brake rather than blip the accelerator which pulls off relatively quickly.

Wow, thanks that was an awesome explanation lol! I have now turned it on, and agree it's really helpful, means I never have to keep my foot on the brake. Just to confirm though, I will leave it on all the time and drive around normally with it on, so even if I was driving round a track at higher speeds?. Just leave it on and forget about it right?.

No problem, haha! I was in work on nights and it was a quiet shift, so I took my time ;)

Yes it is a great feature and well worth the £75. Yes correct, you can drive around with it on and it not cause any issue as it doesn't do anything until you apply pressure when stopped. The only reason I've ever needed to turn it off is manouvering very tightly, to stop it coming on and allowing me to control the speed that little easier with the brake otherwise you find yourself blipping the throttle to release it and the car moves too fast then. Otherwise mine is on 100% of the time.

Blimey, two things come to mind...

  1. I have Hold Assist but have never used it - the car holds itself on hills which is good enough for me
  2. What handbrake? Eek. Never used it.. I see a switch to my left. Never seen it light up :)

That's because you have to put the handbrake on? :p Don't tell me you let it rock on the gearbox :sadlike:

Oh dear.. I had better start using it then! :) Never felt like it needed it, unlike manuals...

I will give them both a try tonight... yippee, more experiments.
Still have not got round to working out other stuff, like the hard disk....

If you're on a steep hill then use it. If not then park should be fine.

I think for the hard disk you have to put in an SD card or Memory stick and copy over.

I have a few more questions;

I presume you already all know the oil temperature gauge is located at the top of the lap timer section ;) I had to research how to find it.

1) At what temperate is it safe to start driving hard? I usually wait till 60 degrees, but can I do it sooner?.

2) I noticed my front tyres are larger than my rear tyres - is this normal?.

3) I can’t seem to get Siri to work with the Bluetooth - seems the Audi voice guidance overrides it. Is there a fix for this?

Thanks guys :)

I wait for 80 on oil temp, 60 a bit too low imho. Wider front tyres were an option to help avoid understeer.

60 is too low, normal operating temp will likely be above 100. It sits at 103-106 in the S3.

I keep the car under 3000rpm until at 80 degrees, maybe if I'm at 75 I will take it up to 4000 on a very rare occasion but I tend to live by that rule.

In the RS3 the oil temp runs lower. Around 88-92 for me. If driving hard then 97. I've never seen 100.

I'd probably still wait for 75-80, can never be too careful :p Makes me cringe the amount of people that leave work on the red line in every gear, horrid

Absolutely. I always wait until 80 before giving it the beans.

I'm glad the majority of us wait. The amount of times I've gone out on test drives with salesmen and they boot it from the off, that's what puts me off Ex-Demo's.

My friend has a new S3 and revs it cold, always hear him leaving work on the red line.. horrendous :'( Tried telling him but he won't listen, for an engineer he doesn't have much mechanical sympathy. He put a video up a few days ago revving it cold when the engine was on a cold start, it sounded ill :sadlike:

Hold on a sec.... Lap Timer... Oil temp/pressure.
Where are these?

Actually, was a library pic but TBH I have only washed the outside a few times since purchase and not touched the inside yet.
I love the cars clean but I don't want to get Anal about it and start worrying about dust.
Ah, I do wash bird crap off as soon as I see it... :)

Ah, I should add that I keep ALL the cars in covers when not in use.... and only really drive in the dry.

Ah right haha! Still, wash it more ;) Black is a bit of a nightmare to clean and keep clean.

Covers on a dirty car? Scratch heaven ;)

Thanks guys, 80 degrees it is :)

I am now considering selling my RS3, bought directly from Audi, only 1 previous owner and under 14k miles. 2016 plate.

Has Manufacturing Warranty and Roadside Assistance till 29/03/2019 or 60,000 Miles, and an extra 12 month key cover.

Catalunya red, black mirrors, red callipers, dynamic pack, audi sports exhaust, audi magnetic ride, B & O soundsystem, sat nav high, sport seats, loads of factory extras.

She's absolutely mint and I've only ever put in super unleaded.

Anyone interested please get in touch :)

Price?! And why selling so soon?

Ideally I’d like £41k ish - and only selling because this was another of my impulse purchases and I need the cash for other things. It’s a genuine reason for sale.

Didn't you only get the car at the beginning of last month?! Surely a good impulse purchase. I'm sure we'll see you back in an RS soon enough again if you sell.
