Hi,

I am currently loving using cruise control on the M6 where there are road works going on along a stretch of motorway where the speed limit is 50 MPH just outside of Birmingham.

If the car is going too fast i.e. the road is on a download slope and cruise control slows the car down to maintain 50MPH, does anyone know if the rear brake lights come on? Or does the brake light only come on when my foot physically presses on the brake light. Would be good if they did come on during cruise control to alert the driver behind.

Thanks

The brake lights come on - I've noticed when driving in the dark.

Doesn't slowing down with cruise control mean decelerating only, not braking?....seems odd therefore that the brake lights would come on

I too have been wondering whether Adaptive Cruise Control uses both regular braking and engine braking. I suspect the former for quicker/emergency situations and the latter during other times.

Certainly regular braking would need to engage rear lights for obvious safety reasons.

Brake lights come on with ACC on my S7, when car in front slows.

They don't come on under normal deceleration (I.e. I set ACC for 70, then accelerate to 85 and take my foot off the accelerator)

Not sure if anything has changed in new A3/S3's since your S7, but even standard cruise (not ACC) will actively apply the brakes (not just cut the power) if you going down a hill (an example) will cause your speed to rise.

I think OP is asking in this case. if the brake lights come on or not

Funnily enough I was wondering just this exact thing the other day lol

ACC will use a very limited form of engine braking (it'll reduce throttle but never actively shift back to engine brake more). All other slowing down is done with the regular brakes, and the brake lights will come on whenever they are used.

So on my trip to Switzerland and back (1550 miles trip) this question was in my head all the time. Glad I finally found the answer!

Makes sense if they did come on as, when cruising in the 60 zone with CC on, I reach the 40 zone and depress and hold the CC stalk down so it reduces in 5mph increments it can slow fairly rapidly and brake lights would at least warn anyone behind you.

I too had been wondering whether the brake lights come on using ACC. Mainly because on the M6 last week some clown in a 'stang nearly drove into the back of me - or at least it looked that way in the rear view mirror - when the ACC decelerated and stopped the car at the back of a queue.

Since then I have been trying to see the reflection of brake lights in the front of cars behind me when using ACC but have been able to see them.

After having a regular journey involving a number of 50mph stretches of the M6 I'm thinking that cruise without it would be pretty feeble.

I can't imagine any situation where a car would apply the brakes but not illuminate the brake lights. In fact I wouldn't surprised if there are laws to dictate this.

ACC applies 25% brakes on my 2010 Audi when needed

I can confirm that my brake lights do not illuminate when using the standard cruise control on my PFL Stronic A3 saloon when the engine is 'braking' going down a hill......I tested this several times early yesterday morning when it was still dark.
