Probably not worthy of a thread, but on my way home yesterday I found myself behind a driver who seemed keen to be a little "enthusiastic" and I was happy to oblige within reason of course :tonguewink:

The car was a BMW 435d x drive

Needless to say I was impressed with it's turn of pace! I was expecting my S3 to be significantly quicker... and although I was catching him up it was relatively close.

It wasn't until I got home and googled the car that I realised their stats are pretty impressive.

Power is nothing without torque..........
An S3 will struggle to keep up with many diesels when rolling on, the Q5 TDI (let alone an SQ5 diesel) is nigh on as quick as an S3 from maybe 40mph and tbh I would expect a 435d to blow you away if he wanted. That 35d motor is arguably the best road going engine BMW make.

An S3 isn't really that quick (other than its 0-60) as its torque isn't that impressive particularly when compared to big diesel engines. But for a 2.0l petrol it can get a wriggle on. As others suggest technical enhancement maybe the answer................

Agree, and as @msdmjb says its only from 0-60mph that the S3 really kicks a$$ against the torque massive diesels.

The 40-140km/h is crazy for a 2 ton car.

And here's the 435xd OP's talking about. I don't think the figures are always 100% correct because if you compare the PFL S-Tronic to the FL S-Tronic the PFL is 1.7 sec quicker from 40-140km/h.

To be fair guys I was catching him as I say.

I'm not sure he knew what car I was driving and I think I surprised him a bit. As we parted ways at a roundabout I felt like he wanted to see what car I was in. I know the mirrors do give it a way and he could have just been wanting to give me a hand gesture of some sort but that's not how it felt.

Those figures are actually really close for the two cars!

edit... we were also going up hill! I probably did quite well looking back ha ha!

Great reading! That is close between the S3 and 435d.

The BMW diesels have always had stonking performance though, back to the E46 330d(?). I've always treated them with a bit of respect. Because like someone said, get caught in the wrong gear and they are gone.

I usually drive in manual mode... glad I'd flicked across to sport mode then!

I used to drive an E46 330d....only 180bhp....but the torque was immense....had a lot of fun in that car, especially on motorways....plus it was red and debadged so a lot of people thought it was an unmarked Police car lol....I used to go up behind people fast and stick on their bumper and after a little while they would scurry off and then get back on again much to my amusement.....aggghhh, those were the days being a total c...k beemer driver lol
All of you stock S3 owners want a taste of epic torque...just go Stage 2 with IC, downpipe and open up all airways as much as possible...the pull all the way is really impressive

The extra 230Nm of torque makes little difference to the overall performance of the X435D
0.1s to 400m
0.8s to 100km/h
0.1s to 100km/h

at 2250 Euro cheaper the S3 is far better value.

But when the x35d engines are remapped. The Torque is stupiddddddddd.

For that difference in price you get 6 pots and economical diesel if driven properly. Also, it can be argued that 4 series is a class above Audi's "3 series" as 4 series competes directly to A5/S5 which is a class above A3/S3.

I just got my butt whooped yesterday at a trafic light by a dad with his children in the back of his A6 TDI Avant... I activated launch control on my own oil burner (BMW 120d M Sport) and I knew a sub 7sec 0-100kmh was waiting. What I didn't knew was that I just challenged a Audi A6 3,0 TDI Avant quattro Tiptr. with 313hp/650nm. My RWD bimmer didn't had a chance and the 44 days 7 hours and 2 minutes until I get my S3 seems even longer now :slapped:

Those bi turbos are deceptive

As you all say...it's all about midrange torque.

The guy who built my Cosworth engines always went for midrange torque over maximum bhp,and even then I do remember being behind a 3L BMW turbodiesel back then and being impressed by it's acceleration.

Up until this year, despite the power and torque of mine,it was still easy to get caught out below the torque range of the engine, but the DSG conversion and turbo mods sorted that out.....diesels just have an immediate advantage in terms of where that torque comes in.

Agree with the comments on the two being very well matched as I have had a similar experience when keeping pace with a 435x drive and was toying with the idea of the 430x drive or 435x drive instead of the S3 saloon when changing in my PFL S3 SB.

Discounts on 430x and 435x's were huge earlier in the year and dealers were awash with them in my neck of the woods due to worries about diesel making them very evenly priced with the S3 Saloon. But deciding factor for me was size, 4 series was bigger than I really needed

@GTAIVgunner has a oil burner in his A3... he kept up very well with the trip to AITP with the two S3's, RS3 & S7! Those TDi's are pesky little buggers! lol

And I had the impression TFSI engines are oil burners, because you know - majority of them use oil and need occasional fill ups. :whistle2:

Remember being behind an A5 3.0TDI in the R32 once, he wasn't pulling away but I couldn't gain on him either!

Many years ago I foolishly decided to buy a 2007 Fiat Punto 1.9 m-jet 120bhp diesel, and I remember having a play with a scirocco 2.0tsi - from 30 on a dual carriageway it was neck and neck...

this thread makes me laugh....I think with oil burners we don't want to admit it but we are all "secret lemonade drinkers" (if you're old enough to remember that classic Ad lol).....THAT torque!!!!! one of my old bosses who I bought the 330d off was a racing driver/full on petrolhead and he loved the car and shocking 4 people in it how quick it was.....my other boss at the same time (I kind of worked for 2 companies at same time) was of the same sway just older....and he railed the car and him for loving "a tractor" as he put it....but even he was impressed.....that was then (10 years ago)....can't say I wouldn't be VERY tempted to head back to the latest version of that car someday...

My Son can't sell enough of either the 335d or the 435d.... He purchased 8 for his dealership used of course, and all sold out within a week the 330d /430d X drives are just as popular but harder to source used

I went for a test drive in a 435d x drive about 6-8 weeks ago, and wow did it shift! The torque was brilliant, still considering one with all the m sport body kit. Great discounts to be had, but think I'd miss that 6,500/7k rpm redline

The diesel needs more engine torque to produce the same wheel torque to overcome the gearing difference, that's why there isn't much of a gain in performance.

Give the S3 630NM and your tyre's wouldn't last too long. :racer:

Total rubbish. What matters is torque at the wheels and that's a function of gearing and revs. That's why in-gear acceleration of diesels is better than petrols of similar power (but higher torque) yet all the petrol needs to do is drop a cog or two and the playing field is levelled.

A Q5 TDI "nigh on as quick as an S3 from maybe 40mph"?! A 2.0TDI 163PS Q5 takes 7.8s to go from 40-70mph through the gears and 50-90 takes 15s. An S3 takes 3.3 and 5.8 seconds for the same increments, utterly decimating the Q5. Yes an SQ5 is quicker but not massively (3.2 and 4.2s respectively) but then it has the same power and 63% more torque so it's hardly surprising.

Of course a diesel with comparable power to a petrol but a lot more torque will be quicker but the notion that diesel torque can somehow make up for lower horsepower is a totally fallacy.

Interesting read for me as I've just moved into a 435d xdrive after having an S3 for a couple of years (now doing high mileage with work). The performance between the two are really close and I do love the low down torque in the 435. Both cars in comfort and foot down the 435 feels quicker (agree with getting caught in the wrong gear!) but when pushing both cars to the "limit" the S3 did it for me. I really miss the soundtrack! Ha
