Phone AV Mirroring to MMI

I have done this also and got it to work fine for less than £20.

That was based on me borrowing a chromecast.

Its ok... But i wouldn't go out my way to use it, the pictures quite grainy and not sharp enough for me to use for maps as intended. Especially as i can't listen to the radio whilst doing it.

So overall, not really worth it!

i want to do it how you've shown it Patrik, but im struggling to find the correct AMI cable? is it any Ami cable from ebay or amozon or does it have to one for your car E.G A4 A5 A6 .

Cheers

O just looked and Patrik uses Chromecast, whats the quality like for you Patrik?
I get decent quality. And i use Android auto on my phone. There i use maps and spotify while drivning. But the resolution in the cardisplay is still low. But thats just the hardware of the display. Atleast in my A3 8V 2013.

I have an A3 8V also , normally i use Google Music and stream that via media bluetooth that works fine. However i prefer google maps since the road updates are live compared to the maps normally. What is Android auto?

Also do you use the MMI > RCA connection as discussed above?

Yes i use the mmi->rca->hdmi-converter->mhl-usb conected to phone or Chromecast (if i want it wireless).

Ah i have only used it for chromecast.

I haven't tried to connect my phone to the the converter via HDMI.

Is the quality any better or the same as chromecast?

Its really the same quality. It all comes down to the lowres of the cardisplay and the RCA<->HDMI conversion that sets the limitations of the output.

Ive seen vids on YouTube with cables for iOS mmi<->lightningcable without the RCA to HDMI conversion. There the output is much better.

Got a video? Might be worth it if i can get a MMI > Mini USB instead and just hook up my phone. Not sure if it will transmit audio and visual then though.

I dont have mmi to mhl/microusb.. i still go through the RCA to HDMI conversion box.

Included a picture of my setup. I need power to both the mhl cable and the conversionbox .. and att the moment i just have power to one.. so i cant show you the display.

Doesn't that get in the way when you drive
Do they do a Bluetooth adapter? So audio cable to Bluetooth, then I could connect my phone and stream Spotify

I'll tuck it all down the middle console . The mhl cable to RCA HDMI box does both audio and video. So just play Spotify on your phone. And it will output from the car-speekers

Right just a quick update...i have a galaxy S7 so ordered the correct AMI cable with Rca outputs and the digital box converter and the male to male RCA spacers, then realized that the Samsung S7 doesnt support HDMI

So tomorrow im off to get a Chromecast to connect to the White little box thingy and then hopefully connect my S7 to the chromecast which should then let we stream fone mirroring to my audi screen...

Does that sound about right folks????

Let us know what the quality is like once done

It'll be as poor as i explained originally.

This is all due to the RCA connectors.

I suspect if you use another connection apart from them it may be better.

right this is doing my head in now.

I've connected the chrome cast up to my home Wifi and then taken it out to the car and got it to play Netflix's on to the Audi MMI screen ( cool ) using Wifi, BUT i can't get it to mirror my phone screen @ all???????

im following the thread and using an AMI cable with the three RCA cables on the end, connected to 3 male to male gold plated RCA spacers, that are then plugged into the White Digital box thingy, im running power to my White box thingy. my Chrome cast is plugged into the mini HDMI port and is also drawing power, so all ok.

But its beyond me how you get your phone to sync to the chrome cast, i cannot get the chrome cast to even see the phone, its playing Netflix's via my home wifi, but as soon as i disconnect my phone from the home Wi fi it loses connection, i've tryed moblie hotspot and phone mirroring and everything else but theres just no phone mirroring on the MMI screen, the phone works as a remote when connect to home wifi and works fine on the Audi screen on netflix's and deezer with fast forward and rewind working via the phone, but i losts and pi--ed off that my phone refuses to work with the chrome cast as a mobile data hot spot....

MINES an S7 galaxy if anybodys any ideas??????

You have to set up your Chromecast with your mobile hotspot for it to work. Then when in car activate the phones hotspot. The Chromecast till connect to it. And the you can mirror your phone to the Chromecast. It's a bit tricky. It can take some time.

...or ..if the Chromecast is already setup with your WiFi. use the same name/password on your both your WiFi and hotspot.. good luck

Right i thought i'd update my TROUBLES, so i got my Chrome cast working with my phone ( samsung S7 ) i even managed to screen mirror to the Tv ( what a ballache ) it was to do thou...

So out to the car again and hooked everything up and hey presto yes it works on the Audi screen, tethering and screen mirroring the lot.....BUT and its a big BUT, im using a BELKIN twin usb charger to power the white box thingy and the chrome cast, and whilst @ the beginning of my adventure my picture was super clear on the Audi car screen its now anything but clear.

Im getting flickers and lines across the screen, twisting the Belkin around and swopping over the usbs from one to another has little to no effect. + now my phone ( galaxy s7 ) AGAIN refuses to tether to the chrome cast without a Home wifi connection , it just doesnt see the chrome cast if theres no wifi...GURRRRRRRRRRRR... it just doesnt tether to the chrome cast with mobile data..

i think its the S7 thats the issue as my wifes sony new phone works fine..

Is it worth doing???????? if you dont have an s7/s8 galaxy phone prob yes as it looks cool and isnt that expensive to get going, if you have an S7/S8 and have got it all working and tethered up to your moblie, please do a right up and explain how you manged to get it to repeat hook up each time as mines just not playing ball when trying to use mobile data....

I've got a Facelift 2017, we don't have an MMI slot

So you got it working one time in the car with wifi?.. And now it won't cast without WiFi?

That sounds strange. I don't think it's your hub causing this. If you got bad signal from the HDMI to RCA box it's probably the box (I know I get that with my box.. it's crap ). If you got a high amp/volt charger it would be enough. And you said you got it working.. Soo..

You can cast with a Sony and not S7?.. did you cast from the Google home app och the Samsungs built in (scroll down from top of screen).?

I don't have a S7 anymore. But it works with my OnePlus 5..

I'll try to shoot a video with my setup and how I do it some time.

Hi Patrik.

I gave up to trying to cast from my phones mobile data plan, my wife whos far more tech savy than me finally after 2hrs!!!! got my phone to wireless link to my phone using the phones mobile data plan, took it out to the car and it worked fine, but wouldn,t cast the phones home screens only netflixs and iplayer???

So came back in and after another hour got the phone to mirror cast onto the home TV using home Wifi all my phones apps and different pages + pics and videos...

So the next day i went back out to my car to try mirror cast and happy days it shows all apps and so on and so, BUT it will only link to the CHROME CAST using the house WiFi again.

It refuses to connect to the Chrome cast using my mobile data again, it just doesnt see the chrome cast or the chrome cast doesnt see my phone when on mobile data...

VERY frustrating and now to add to it the signal strength ( picture quality ) is really wavey and has lines on the screen which i can only guess is the BELKIN twin usb charger as all my connections are spot on and im using gold male to male RCA spacers and all the wire provided with the chrome cast and white box thingy...

Its strange because on saturday the white box thingy was giving a spot on picture, i'd say house Tv quality then sunday its terrible?

With regard to the connecting via mobile data im @ my wits end as to how to get a reliable constant mobile data connection...its frustrating as im 95% there now...

I don't have the mmi slot on my 2017 saloon sadly. Tried with a USB to rca converter but nothing happened :(

Right just a little update..

I've been trying in vain to get my chromecast linked up to my Galaxy S7 on mobile hot spot/tethering...After reading a long long thread and Android Geek yesterday it appears that when Google released an update for chrome cast on 1/06/17 the update removed the ability to tether/mobile data tether one phone to the cast!!!!

theres a Beta test update that they have released on 01/08/17 to try and restart tethering process but i tryed it yesterday and mine still doesnt connect via mobile hotspot....BOOOOOOOOOOO

You need WIFI to use a Chromecast. It won't work over Bluetooth. And a hotspot on your phone merely allows other devices to access the Internet via your SIM card. It's not going to allow point to point wireless connectivity.

Hi guys,
I did pretty much the same in my 2013 S5 sportback, except I connected a Microsoft Wireless Display v2 dongle instead of a chromecast. Its best because it doensn't need a wifi network to work.
Mirroring works great, it allows me to use spotify and waze of my Sony z5 compact wirelessly.
However I was wondering if you noticed an audio quality loss compared to bluetooth audio ?
I used to listen spotify in the car with Bluetooth on my phone and it looks the music has now less bass for example. I tried to customize the audio settings in the MMI/bang&olufsen settings and in the phone but no luck yet...

I used MWD dongle too. And its great. You dont need wifi hotspot (but wifi needs to be active on your phone for this to work). About the audio quality i guess its worse then use BT. You are sending both display and sond wireless to a hdmi to rca converter. So i guess you lose some on the way.

Another problem I noticed in addition of the audio quality : I can't access internet anymore when screen mirroring is enabled. I think the phone is trying to use wifi instead of 3G/4G when the mirroring is enabled. Do you also have the same problem ?
Maybe I should buy a chromecast instead and enable wifi hotspot on my phone ?

Yes it use wifi to send the screen to the dongle. So i guess no 4g Internet.

I have done the chromecast approach to. Its great once you get it to connect. My recent tries have made Me think Google has updated the chromecast firmware. Because its realy hard to get it working.

If your phone supports mhl then i would go with an mhl cable instead. Sure its wired. But it works great.

Yes I just ordered an MHL cable to give it a try. I just need to find a proper way to hide the cable between the glovebox and the center console.

Just tried with an MHL cable instead of the Microsoft Wireless Display v2 adapter : audio quality is great (quite the same as in bluetooth) and no more 3G/4G problems. And it also charges the phone while connected. Now I just need to find a proper way to route the cable from the glovebox to the center console, ending in the ashtray would be great so I can hide the cable when I don't use it.

Oh and I added a small widget on my phone to swap quickly the audio output from bluetooth to the MHL cable when it is connected (without disconnecting the bluetooth completely, to keep the phone calls in bluetooth when the cable is connected). The app is called BBS (the free version doesn't have the widget).

Debadged the rear, wasn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be. Lots of dental floss, lots of sticky stuff remover and a load of elbow grease lol
Got some pics. Sorry ran out of time to clean her

Ok cool. If you find a good way to route the cables let us know with a picture :)

Hi
I'm using an Android one, with a microUSB plug so that won't help unfortunately

I found a way to route the cable from the glove box to the ashtray area. I dismounted again the glovebox and used one of the two existing top holes in the bottom. Then i removed the AC panel by pulling the panel from the bottom with a hook under it. So i discovered there are existing holes on the lower side of the panel. So i routed the cable from the back of the glovebox to the AC panel hole. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures...

It is working fine but I have a last issue : the battery isn't charging enough compared to the power consumption of waze+spotify+screen mirroring. While connected with the MHL cable, the phone is in mode USB charge and not AC charge/fast charge. I saw several forum threads with the same issue in MHL.
Does anyone here has the same issue or a solution ?
