Hi could anyone explain how to force a regen on the egr? I keep reading it's possible on ccwa engine but can't find how to do it. I have insufficient flow so light is always on and want to try it before spending out on egr or cooler. Thanks

Regeneration on a EGR? Never heard of that before. Regen on a DPF yes, but never on EGR.

What's the exact fault code you're getting? If it's EGR insufficient flow then it's blocked.

Getting p0401. I'm guessing must be blocked but the pipe that goes to inlet is actually pretty clean can still see the ribs inside, cars only done 59000. I'd never heard of regen egr either but when searching problem after seeing how clean pipe looked found it can apparently only be done on a 3.0 tdi ccwa engine. Thought I'd try cheapest option first although egr for this car doesn't look too expensive if buy from eBay. I read about a filter for egr cooler on certain engine but couldn't find out which one so unsure on that.

Could stick in some cleaner (specific EGR cleaner) before going on a longer run and see if that helps - before stripping it all down. I'm not sure whether that code would denote a general blockage of carbon or a faulty EGR valve with a sticking mechanism which is not fully opening.

The EGR doesn't need regenerating like a DPF does. It shouldn't get blocked in normal use but I suppose if the EGR cooler has got partially blocked then passing very hot exhaust gas through it such as what exists when the DPF is being regenerated may clear some of the carbon from the cooler.
I have never heard of a specific setup on VCDS though that would clear the EGR but doing a bit of a Google search seems to indicate that it's possible on a CCWA. However if the cooler is blocked there is little or no flow so not much actual hot exhaust gas will find it's way through the cooler.
The fact that the car has low miles may indicate it's spent a lot of it's life doing short journeys in town. The worst thing for a diesel.
May be cheaper in the long run and better for the car to get it remapped and block the EGR system off. Win win better performance and no more EGR issues.

I had the same fault code the other day. Driving as per norm ( mainly motorways ) then Eng check light on a mike from home. Got back ok all seemed fine no power issues or sluggishness. Got back plugged in and got the p0401 code. Checked the dpf and that read 20 g which I think is ok? Any way code cleared and have driven her today with out issues. Only thing different on that trip was having aircon on. But I can't see that effecting it.

I still havent got anywhere with this yet. I cleared the code beginning of last week and had been driving as normal A and B roads mainly no town stuff so not sitting around and it lasted about 5 days. Am going to try remove the egr see how dirty it actually is. Tried quickly the other week but its in there solid so will need force and hope i dont break it. Im not sure air con would make a difference. Yes it puts a little more strain on engine but its so minimal and shouldnt affect egr in any way i can think of.

Did you find out how to do the egr clean? I haven't been that far in mine yet so it will prob return

Update

Not heard from Chris ref his snag.
Ref mine, took my gal to my indie today still had the code active but p2 this time. No light on. They tried to remove egr but stuck fast so they did an egr regen Post regen she is a lot more responsive and no fail light.
On a long drive tom so will scan after to see if regen helped. If not it's a new egr valve

Thought I'd come back with little update, I had egr valve changed. Light stayed off for about 50 miles. Kept taking it back to garage as he kept saying he was trying something to do with adaptation etc this went on for few weeks. Finally today he has changed the cooler after much persuasion. I think the fact it's a crap job he kept fobbing me off with the adaptation story. So now I will see how long the light stays out for. He did say the connecting pipes were pretty ****. I've got the old cooler so may cut open to see how blocked up it is.

Well luckily I haven't paid for any work as been done under warranty paid for by dealer I got car from. They charged about 650 for the cooler change though. But I've covered 35 miles since it was done and I have the dreaded EML light on again. Not sure why yet as haven't plugged in yet will have to pop it into garage tomorrow. Getting frustrated now. As thought finally would be cured as everyone seems to suggest that it's the cooler at fault not the valve but both are new. Unless Garage needs to do more than reset the light after changing them??

That is lucky. Let me know how you get on. I thinking of having my egr mapped out.

Well garage had it back today and said completely his fault the light came on he left a plug off and because he didnt have a chance to drive it after changing cooler he didn't find fault so now hopefully all sorted. I'm going to cut the cooler open tomorrow morning I'll take a photo of insides if can see it's blocked to show why it fails.

Well its safe to say this was definitely the problem. I cant believe someone even thought the internal design of the cooler wasnt going so quickly. Hopefully from photos you can see how small the internal passages are. Some seem to be less than half a mm. Hope this helps anyone searching wondering if need to change it as got p0401 fault.
