Test Drive: RS 3 Sedan

My point exactly. For £2k you make these cars supercar fast. Aoon has spent significantly more, but his is approaching hypercar fast!

So what do you do for those £2k, hardware and software? What are you expecting from that in time on the drag strip compared to oem?

I have a commission number for my 2018. No delivery ETA yet. I plan on paying cash. Is that alright?

Silly fast? What did it run for a 1/4? Do you have a dyno you can post? Cause isn't the supposedly impressive 11.4 about equal to a stage 2 MK7 R? That's what I currently have and it isn't anything close to silly fast

Yes, silly fast. Car is in a different league to the Golf R...

If you go into the "Project Room" forum on here, then find the thread "RS3 one step at a time" or something like that, you'll see @Shaunee has gone into extreme detail on how he's achieved it. Well worth a read.

I was just planning ahead and was wondering, what do you guys expect the GFV for the RS3 facelift to be? Lets say for a term of 3 years. It seems like a good option to progress from the S3. I'd be hoping that the RS3 Saloon has a bigger boot than the S3 Sportback and similar ride comfort.

4 years, I'd say £23-25k, 3 years maybe a few k more.

^^ going fast in a straight line is boring (if you want to go really fast then just buy a fast motorbike for a lot less than those 3 above).
Going fast around corners is much more interesting, that is usually where Audi's usually fall short..........but are getting better.

Right, but fun in the car world seems to go sideway, which I can`t recognize and remember that someone has won for instance a competition except drifting/rallye.

Burning around like a maniac is not for me I want grip all the time therefore I have an RS3 and not BMW. Porsche is too expensive for my taste.

If you can put some money on the understeer, for ex upgrading rollbars and so on I think its gonna work better although Audis aren`t built for tracks it´s built for roads and the most of us are driving it as that.

You have got a lot more Golf R's on the road than RS3 so there's a hell of a lot of support for their tuning compared to the RS3 that's why the results are coming thick and fast for them. I've read this thread and many are taking the TTRS figures and translating them to the RS3, forg tying the TTRS is around 100kg lighter and will have better aero than the RS3 so will certainly post better times.
I've not ever seen a stage 2 Golf R get anywhere near 11.4 seconds 1/4 miles.
Low eleven second Golf R's usually have uprated turbo, intercoolers, exhausts, tunes and uprated turbo pipes etc.
The thing about the RS3 is you can send off your existing turbo, get new internals for it and slap it straight on with no mods and just a tune and get low 11 secs and I believe that guy was on here with one day almost straight away after he fitted it so there's every chances it could go better.

I've never really found standard cruise control useful, but ACC is pretty useful in very heavy traffic for long periods of time. It's not something you sue all the time, but it has it's uses -- kind of like windscreen wipers, air conditioning, auto headlights etc.
I use acc a fair amount as I'm travelling down the m4 to London amount alot so there's alot of traffic caused by volume of vehicles and moronic drivers keep crashing. About 2 a day. Acc is a bit of marmite though. You have to switch it off near roundabouts and I don't use it if ghe moron in front can't drive if they have have a heavy right foot and like tailgating

Seems like quality on brakes are really poor in this price cathegory on all Audi, Porsche and BMW. Strange that they can build fast cars but not add proper brakes on them. I mean price wise they get payed for quality brakes but us customers doesn't get them.

Do you think the ceramics are worth it on the RS3....or better off (and cheaper) going aftermarket once standard ones are worn out?

Don't know about the cheramics either than that they are really expensive. I had aftermarket Tarox discs and pads for street use mounted now all around and they feel very solid and as I was expecting brakes to do in first place. Haven't done so many miles yet but braking bite is better and better each day. We shall see further on what's happening but I think they are better than oem all day long. I can see less rust on discs, better cooling to discs so even with hard braking they cool down quiet fast, less dust and so on.

Apparently, the Sedan is quieter as the Sportback with the larger loading area helps amplify the overall sound. (True story.... haha)

Also, yellow paint is quicker than any other colour...

Hi all

As noted earlier I had the RS 3 Sedan/Saloon for an overnight test drive last night. As it is late Autumn here most of the drive was in the dark but I've managed to take some photos and videos this morning. Hopefully I've taken photos of all things people requested, sorry if I've accidentally missed any.

Background
I'm currently driving a 2012 F30 335i M Sport M Performance (~360hp) sedan. We also have a 4M Q7 (200kw 3.0 Diesel) we purchased last year which has Audi Virtual Cockpit etc so I'm familiar with most of the Audi bells and whistles.

Test Car
This black RS 3 is basically base NZ spec, with the exception of the matt aluminium styling pack and the 255/235 wheel setup. NZ cars have a high base price but also a high basic spec (mag ride, VC, sports exhaust etc are all standard) so you may like to check out the NZ Specs here: http://www.audi.co.nz/dam/ngw/nz/MY17/Specifications/RS3_SD_Spec_MY17_28_March_2017.pdf

Overall impressions
It really is an awesome package. The new 5cyl engine is an absolute masterpiece. I can't imagine how anyone could want for more. Loads of low down torque and obviously plenty of power. Sounds fantastic too and has plenty of character. I have no doubt this will go down as one of the great engines of all time.

I took the car for about 60km of driving on twisty roads and was very impressed. There was no noticeable understeer (to me, at least), but I also did not manage to get the back to slip out like I did see on some of the Youtube video reviews. It's just so capable and confidence inspiring. It is very easy to go very very fast in this car, no matter what the conditions are.

Driving around town is very comfortable too. Auckland is a city renowned for terrible traffic so some of yesterday afternoon was spent sitting on the motorway and it was very pleasant. Adaptive cruise control worked as it did in the Q7.

The ride is firm, but not overly so, and comfort does make the ride slightly smoother. We have a very early 1900's concrete road where near where we live and it did feel firm on this surface. There were no noticeable rattles though.

Interior fit and finish is pretty good, just as it is in the A3 and S3. It still feels a very nice place to be but is only very slightly dated compared to the 4M Q7 which has an incredible interior. Probably unfair to compare the two cars as they're from different classes, but worth noting.

Other Comments
This car did not have a SIM slot so it would not be possible to use your own SIM for a WiFi hotspot (like we do in the Q7), I think to get this option you need to option Audi Phone Box and Audi Connect.

The MMI screen is still the older smaller screen from the A3 and it really is a bit small by today's standards, especially for things like the rear view camera etc.

These are minor criticisms though and don't detract from what is a very special car. I'm still waiting for the facelift RS 3 Sportback, available to order from next month in NZ.

Enjoy the photos and videos, let me know if you have any questions.

It seems to pop a lot more in neutral dynamic mode than its predecessor BUT it doesn't have the bangs.

Interesting.
