2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

Oil consumption is a really hard thing to pick up on the inspection. Especially if the car was thoroughly washed beforehand. Mine was so shiny that i doubt the inside of the exhaust would have been black. Pretty much comes down to caveat emptor.

Knowing what i know now, i would have bought a diesel 3.0 Q5 instead of the A4 - and not just due to oil consumption, but for loading height (my wife is now pregnant) - but you can't predict anything. Having the warranty will ease things massively, $350NZD excess for a $8-$10K fix, i wouldn't be worried, Audi will not do the PCV fix if the consumption is really high - and it sounds like yours is higher than mine. Put in in S mode and drive it like you stole it, that'll drop the oil reading even quicker.

I have started a conversation with Audi NZ to see what they are going to do about this, i would like if they took car eof the bill, but even knowing that any car from 2009-2012 in the effected class will be fixed, is enough for me.

Good luck

Thankyou and good luck to you as well.

Car is going back into garage tomorrow to give the car a thorough going over. Talk has also involved piston rings which can only be a good thing that will hopefully lead to a new engine.

Also, I drive an 09 audi a4 quattro avant with 6 speed manual. Thought this doesn't have a sport mode but I could be wrong.

Also I concur with possibly wanting a different car. I kinda want a s line 3.0 avant. Very tunable apparently.

Mine is a 2011 1.8TFSI and as of yesterday has failed its consumption test. Just waiting on Audi UK to confirm to the dealer payment so that my engine rebuild can go ahead.
Finally got my A4 back yesterday after three weeks at Audi. Full engine rebuild done and a new air conditioning unit as they broke the old one taking out the engine. No charge as FASH and under warranty. However the whole process took almost four months from first reporting to actual fix.

Hi all,

Just wanted to leave an update on my first post on page 34.

2010 A4 Avant 1.8 TFSI

Got the car back from Audi mid June after being with them for about a week. Full engine rebuild as all cars seem to be having. They changed the tensioner for me without charge and I got them to do a few extras that needed doing which I paid for. All work completed FOC in good will. I had a FASH apart from 1 service which was only a few months before I bought the car. Car was on 40K and was going through a litre of oil in 300 miles.

Since then I have driven to Cornwall from Hampshire and south Wales two or threee times. Oil gauge is full and hasn't moved.

Audi Southampton were fantastic and Karen the lady I dealt with there was excellent. I will certainly be keeping my business with them going forward even if it does cost me a little more... it's worth it.

Hope everyone else now gets a similar experience to myself. All in all the full process took about 4 months or so. I made sure I chased (in a friendly manner) my contact at Audi Southampton every so often as I'm sure we aren't priority work understandbly.

Good luck!

M

So, an update on my situation. Oil consumption test has revealed a litre of oil being used in under 600kms. As the car is still under dealer warranty they are footing the bill for a full rebuild with genuine parts. This will include:

Up-rated piston ring set
replacing all pistons and rings.
Replacing all con rods and associated bearings.
Replacing all circlips.
Replacing the head-gasket.
Replacing all head bolts.
Replacing timing chain cover gasket.
Replacing oil and filter.

They rang me this morning and at that point they had already ordered all the new parts from Germany that will arrive in NZL supposedly next Wednesday.

So yeah, I'm pretty happy and freaking amazed at the service I am receiving.

Hi Guys,

Can anyone say how long is it before Audi UK come back to you, I have 4 Audi services and 2 indie services of which I and Audi have copies of the receipts stating 5W - 30 oil to be used. Preston audi said its a fail and new Pistons etc required So I am waiting on Audi UK decision Preston Audi (who have been fantastic) recommend full Audi contribution. This was only yesterday however I have ants in my pants and am on pins awaiting the decision I do wish they would hurry up its been ongoing about 6 weeks but feels like an age. I must have read every entry here and the A3 section.

Cheers.

Jeffo.

I had 1 Audi services and 2 indie services. Audi UK came back to Audi Bromley within a few days and agreed to pay entire cost. Got car back a few weeks ago (only took them a week - and I was given A6 S-line courtesy car). Car drives better than before. Cannot comment on oil consumption as have not done enough miles. Audi Bromley have been 1st class.

Hi all, I am in the process of buying a 2011 2.0tfsi a4 dynamik 58k (reg June 2011) and after discovering this thread i'm having second thoughts, I've asked the dealer if the car has had an oil consumption test or the engine rebuild that so many seem to need and his reply was that the engine in this car is a later model where the issue has been fixed.
Does anyone know if it's correct that later models weren't affected?
It's a dream car but don't want it turning into a nightmare

What shape are the headlights ? It is my understanding that the 2011 cars with the revised shaped headlights are not affected

In my opinion, you should not buy this car unless you feel sure about that. As far as I read from the related sources, that 2011 model car is probably one of the affected ones. To make sure about this situation you can search the Net for related bulletins issued by Audi or similar official publications describing this oil consumption issue precisely.

Take the engine ID of the car from the dealer, and check it on the engine type code that is the first a few letters of the engine ID.

utter shte IMO, my car is an 11-plate Dynamik and failed the oil test so claiming it's a "later engine" is speaking from ignorance or is an outright lie.

Having followed the position, it was my understanding that from 2011 (EA888 Gen 3 engines) both this "piston heat damage issue" and "carbon build-up in the inlets" was sorted. With large scale production going on around the World it is difficult to know if there was any overlap with engine versions.

Run a mile unless it has already been rebuilt. It really is not worth the agro unless you are buying from Audi. They seem to be squirming of late due to the number of rebuilds they are doing. If it does not have a full Audi history go and find another.

My car is a September 2011 A4 1.8TFSI and had the issue.Read back through the last few pages and you will see my experience. Unless you are buying from Audi and/or the engine rebuild has already been done I wouldnt touch it personally.
Having said that my car is now running like a dream after the rebuild. If you can find a model with the work already done then no reason not to buy.

Hi Guys, Is there any difference dealing with a franchise as apposed to a main dealer re the oil consumption work (engine rebuild I dont mean the difference if any in the skill level of the technicians) I mean the way Audi approach the work to be carried out. Do they favour main dealer more than franchise are they quicker to deal with main dealer or are they all the same as they all carry the Audi brand. Cheers.

Hi Guys,

Absolutely fantastic news Preston Audi just called I have been granted full Audi contribution its going in August 14 th for full rebuild am I over the moon.

Thats great, I have done over 700 miles since my rebuild and the engine is really smooth and responsive. Oil gauge hasn't moved one bit in that time. Before rebuild I would have needed a litre of oil for 700 miles!

I only bought the car in a private sale in February. But it came with a balance of 6 months Audi approved warranty. Since then I have had the engine rebuild done ,new water pump and air-con unit fitted .Also a full service. All of this was FOC including 2 different courtesy cars (A4/Q3) The Q3 was brand new with 400 miles on the clock!

Cars drives lovely as I said, my first Audi and I honestly found the customer service at Audi Belfast second to none. Dread to think what kind of hassle I would have had without the warranty though!

This thread was invaluable to me during the whole process. It helped me to realise that the excessive oil use was a major issue which needed looked at urgently.

Anyone new to the thread should really take the time to read through it as I did.

Unfortunately I was heavily scared by the whole experience; probably because it was before Audi finally came to terms with having to accept the issue. I am still loving the Merc and can't see me returning to Audi anytime soon.

We are however still enjoying our '96 Audi V6 cab, but i am starting to consider my options. I've been looking at the Golf R cabriolet. My only concern is most available cars are 13 plates. Des anyone know of these suffer the oil issue?

Alternatively I 'may' consider the S3.

Absolutely this thread is in valuable as are most of the others as so many people have had different experiences and it is good to put them all together and be able to formulise the path you take. What I cant understand is how so many people have had the problem rode it out (and its not a pleasant experience) and then get their car completed and then get rid. When they have been presented with a nearly new top class motor.

Does the oil consumption issue affect all tfsi engines around this age? My brother in law is looking for a 10 plate Audi TT but doesn't want this issue. I've got a 10 plate A4 that fortunately Audi UK covered the full cost of repair

Because when I looked through all my paperwork at the time, every repair bill for essentially common issues cost me around £1000 a time. The final straw was the replacement of three shock absorbers not long after having the engine repaired.

Guess what... almost £1000. Apparently I must have been driving my S-Line off road.

Hi Guys,
I have been following this thread with interest and thought I would share where I have got to. I own a 2009 A4 Avant 2litre tfsi. It was supplied new by Norwich Audi (where I live) and has a full service history with them.

I bought the car a couple of years ago with 45k on the clock and it has now done 65k. I had an e91 325i before which used about a litre every 1000 miles and so initially I was not too surprised that the Audi had a similar thirst. The car does about 10k a year and it was getting to the point where I was topping it up (with Castrol) every couple of weeks. One evening a few months ago I followed my wife home in our other car and could not believe how much the avant was smoking. You would be forgiven for thinking it was a diesel.

Prompted by this thread I raised the issue with NA and so began the testing process that we have all been through. On the first part of the test the car only managed just over 300 miles before the oil light came on! They then did the software update and breather pipe mod and that did seem to make a difference as the car the managed about 700 miles on the second part of the test. Needless to say though it still failed the test and so began the wait.

After several weeks I was finally told today that Audi are prepared to offer a 90% contribution to the cost of the rebuild. NA have not yet been able to advise me what that the remaining 10% will equate to but I guess it is going to be £500 - £600.

I have not yet responded to NA (who are already pushing to get the car booked in) but armed with this thread I am going to fight to see if I can persuade them to cover the full cost. Wish me luck!

I can't believe Audi still have the audacity to only offer a contribution with the amount of cases in hand. Surely they should have conceded by now.

I was n't impressed, to put it mildly as my case is almost identical to some of the others on here who were offered 100% - something which I intend to make them aware of.

Hi,
Good luck pal. You should take that contribution completely.

I have my car repaired by contributing 100% by myself, adding to the Audi's contribution of 0% two months ago. Despite that impressive contribution I started a campaign on youtube first all around the world:
Please watch, share and send your any support to me.
I am now preparing to open a case against Audi and local distributor and official service company in Turkey, after trying a conciliation process, finally having a phone call from them and listening their negative response on the phone. Wish me luch for my court against them too.

Morning All,

I've been lurking on this thread for some time as I suspect I have the issue.

Bought an Audi A4 Avant TFSI (59 plate) back in July which was burning through a litre of Castrol every 1000 miles. Did some googling and it seemed this was "Normal" so I just kept throwing in a litre every two weeks (I work 50 miles from home). However, drove to Wales on for a short break last week and my warning light appeared after 600 miles this time, so I got in touch with Audi - After reading this thread plus the official Audi response to the issue on their site.

Audi Oxford openly admitted this was an issue before I even bought it up - and have booked me in for an initial check in a couple of weeks time (Had to wait for courtesy car availability). The guy on the phone was VERY helpful and explained exactly what will be done - and even said that if my check turns out to show that I have the issue - it'll go to Audi HQ to see if I qualify for a fix FOC.

Wish me luck!

It's great having this post to refer to in case they offer a part paid fix as I've seen mentioned a few times.

Any advice on how to handle it when the time comes would also be greatly appreciated!

Andrew

Did you have any luck arguing this?

Hi all,

My first time on this forum. I only came in to check about a racechip and I'm stunned to find out this fault! My exhausts are pitch black, 09 plate A4 2.0 TFSI and drank half the min-max gauge doing a drive from up north to down south. Just e-mailed Audi about this now, any confidence I can get this sorted on an 09 at this time?

The only probable quibble is going to be service history and if any non-franchise service history, written confirmation / supporting documentation of correct spec oil being used.

Well crap, that may make it difficult then. As I was planning a 3,000 mile road trip the garage decided 10W-40 would be better suited and I do have paperwork to prove this. Full service history but not from Audi... Do you think this would be a hiccup?

Seems to be the case on everything I've read so far.

Mine goes in on Monday to setup the first checks. I'll update on here as to how I get on (My oil light comes on at 640 miles consistently now)

Thanks Andrew, look forward to hearing your story. I've never had an oil light as when it drank the oil I had checked it after 400 miles so knew it needed more. Then for about 200 miles it was fine and a month later after topping up it was to half again (like 200 miles). At the moment it reads full.

Update on mine. Just had a call from Audi Bolton and they've confirmed it needs looking into which is a great start. I mentioned the 10/40 that was used on last service and he said it shouldn't really be an issue as long as it has service history, which it does :) Just checking his calender and will confirm as I need a courtesy car. No cost!

Had a look at my service log and it doesn't seem too great. Looks to be missing 3 - 4 years in a couple of gaps. I'm wondering has anyone done this with a poor service history and had Audi contribute anyway?

Sadly Sean, despite this being such a well documented issue, reading through this thread, Audi seem to take 'the hard line' and use anything to wriggle out of this problem.
Just a thought...... Have you checked to see if the services that may be missing have been completed and recorded on Audi's Electronic Service Record system and just missed from the service book ? Either popping into your local dealership or a call to Audi Customer Services can confirm the situation.
Good luck with this, hope you get a satisfactory resolution in the end.
