Hi,

Just wondered if anyone has had a 38K service on their TDI 150 with S-Tronic.

I got a quote yesterday for £549 from Slough and Tetbury Audi as apparantly I need new fluid for the S-Tronic which is £180......

Seems a bit steep for a second service to me.

Cheers

Does that price include an Inspection Service for the car ?

The price for a 19,000 mile Inspection service varies from around £280 to £350

I had a s-tronic oil change on my a previous A3 2.0TDI-140 in February 2012 and the total cost was £207. This was just the cost of the s-tronic service as the dealer paid for the 37k service to compensate for a mess up with the service arrangements on my wife's A1.

The first service on my current A3TDI-184 at 18k cost £276

S tronic should be serviced every 38,000 miles. Not worth missing it.

Genuine oil is around £15-£30 from tps, took around half an hour to change on my previous s3.

I managed to get my first service in Swansea Audi for £230. A good deal I guess? Still felt like I was bent over and abused. It's a bleeding oil change and pollen filter

First services (Oil Service) are in the range of £180 to £250 ;) (not including pollen filter)

But as with anything, prices may vary according to dealer.

So do pollen filters! Some cars are fitted with charcoal versions, some without charcoal!

Got my first service (oil change) for £180 and paid £314 for my first "inspection service" at 19k. Was told that the S-Tronic gearbox will have its fluids changed at my next "inspection service" which is around the 38k mark I think !

These threads always make me smile - Thank You.

People pay Top Dollar for the vehicle and then comment about a couple of hundred quid once a year.
Servicing is a fact of vehicle ownership - enjoy it and suck it up whatever the cost.

Only my view of course, other views will apply !!

My thought's exactly Snibo, nobody likes servicing costs but it's small fry when compared to the overall cost of the vehicle.

Yes we all like a good deal, but I'd much rather pay a higher price to ensure that things were done to the best standard possible. Thus ensuring that: A) The vehicle continues to function correctly and as reliably as possible, and B) That myself and any occupants are safe when the aforementioned vehicle is being used. Of course I grumble a bit when you get the bill but you can't really avoid it.

It's a bit like someone owning an RS5, who then complains about how often they have to fill up or the service costs (a tad hypocritical).

I have the S-Tronic and will have quite a wait to reach 38k as I've only done 7.5k so far. I'll be more worried after the warranty's ended.

Just my opinion. :)

Totally agree!!

As for 38k..................not gonna happen in my ownership as this would take at least 6 years. Will have moved on well before then :)

Please could someone send me the FULL service schedule for my car, getting one direct from Audi is like trying to get blood out of a stone!

Things like, haldex, s-tronic, timing chain, clutch etc etc.

I just want to make sure everything is up to date and correlate the schedule with my paperwork and mileage.

My main concern is the gearbox, i had the general s-tronic gearbox oil/filter changed recently but there's lots of info online that suggests there is another type of oil change required within the gearbox.

Apparently there is the following to do within the s-tronic gearbox:

1. Hydraulic body and clutch oil (pt no G 052 529 A2)
- 7 litres of oil required

2. Mechanic part of the tranny (pt no G 052 513 A2)
- 5 litres of oil required

Im not sure which one of the above is the s-tronic oil change that i have had already. Whichever one Audi suggest, they never mentioned a second oil.

Looking forward to any advice.

Cheers,

Rick

No timing chain (well there is but it's buried inside the engine) so no service required.
What about all the other stuff?

Is there two types of oil that need to be replaced in the s-tronic gearbox?

If you have quattro there’s gearbox, transfer box, haldex and rear differential fluids.

At 40k miles I’m fairly sure it’s just gearbox oil and filter. Think Haldex is 30k.

The first oil is what Audi change during an S-Tronic service at 38,000 miles. the 2nd oil is for the mechanical gears and is "Sealed For Life" like their manual gearboxes. There is no service interval and Audi won't entertain changing it unless the gearbox has been removed and fluid was lost during the process.

Treat the 2nd oil like you would any other normal manual gearbox oil. I would change it AT LEAST every 50,000 miles. Personally I plan on doing the S-Tronic fluid every 19,000 miles and the S-Tronic + Gear Oil + Rear Diff every 38,000 miles for peace of mind.

Car is now out of warranty so all servicing will be done by myself. That way I know it's done properly (not half assed by a dealer monkey) and I have full access to VCDS and the tools needed, etc anyway.

Hi,

Thanks for the detailed response.

So you are suggesting the 2nd oil will not get highlighted by a dealer or Specialist as ever needing replacement as it's sealed?!?

Is it important, if so then why won't they do it?

You say you personally change the 2nd oil at 50,000 miles, from what I can see mine has never had this oil changed and is running at 99000 miles now :(

Yes, a dealer will never touch it as the unit is "Sealed For Life" at the factory. I put the term in quotes as it DOES still have normal drain and fill bolts, but the official word from Audi, is don't touch it. A specialist may change it for you, but they are all different, so cant comment on all of them.

As for why dont they do it, that's a question for Audi, but ALL oil WILL degrade over time, and it's foolish not to change it in my opinion. I suppose it's like the "Long Life Servicing", it looks good on paper, but leaving the same oil for 2 years / 20,000 miles will not do your engine any favours. I suppose it's a selling point where they can say it needs less maintenance (cheaper running costs) than the competition, but at who's expense in the long run...yours not their when it fails out of warranty.

Yes, I would change at 50,000 miles minimum, earlier if possible. If yours has 99,000 miles now and it's not been done, I would get it done.

Audi will sell you the oil, they just won't do the work. So either DIY or get an independent to do it for you and you supply the oil.

As one who chose s-tronic a little nervously, I'm heartened to read of an s-tronic box still going strong at 99,000 miles. Having lived with it for 11 months now, I'm a convert, but at the back of my mind is always the 'what if it plays up' question. In reality I don't need to worry for the remaining 2 years of the warranty, but after that...I'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Seems like you know your stuff mate :)

Have you any idea what this oil service is called..... Should I just ask for a "mechanical gear oil service"?

Last time I mentioned a second oil for the s-tronic to my local Indy he didn't have a clue what I was on about.

Also have you any idea what the cost to service this oil would be roughly, would it be similar to the cost of replacing the s-tronic oil and filter?

Thanks,

Rick

Gearbox is solid in mine mate.

The mechatronics unit was replaced in 2012 though, was about £2-3 grand!!

The part number for the oil SHOULD be G055532A2, and you need 5L of it, but you should send a message to @creweaudiparts on here who are a main Audi Dealership that can advise 100% the correct oil for your car based off your chassis (VIN) number.

You will also need 2 new seal bolts which again SHOULD be part N90281802, but please confirm 100% with Crewe Audi on here.

It is just a gear oil drain and refill. Exactly like a mechanic would do with a manual gearbox. The S-Tronic is basically an automatically controlled manual gearbox. So it has 2 fluids. One fluid is for the mechatronics unit and is a special Audi ATF fluid. The other fluid which we are talking about here is for the mechanical gears and is effectively normal gearbox oil, but I would buy the proper stuff from Audi so you know it's 100% correct.

When I get a chance to hop on my laptop I'll see if I can post info from the service manuals which details this fluid change if it is even in there.
