Changed a rear diff seal today - Pics.

My rear diff as been leekin a tiny bit since I got the car over 3 years ago. It was not leaking much at all, no drips or anything just making the diff damp. But thought I would change it anyway.

Here is the diff before I started.

Also got home to find my new tyres had arrived for the powdercoated alloys so went and got them fitted.

i have to do my diff seals soon how did you pull out the dive shafts i heard a puller is needed
 
Well done there.

It's nice to see someone getting in there and getting their hands dirty.
You have probably saved yourself a small fortune by doing it yourself and you also have that warm feeling of satisfaction.

I really hate paying people to do things that I can do myself. With the help of your little write up you may well well have inspired others to 'have a go'.
 
and get those stickers off you tyres! like having the price on the bottom of your shoe.... ; )

Do you still have these photos? Is this a difficult/expensive job as I've noticed my S4 has quite a lot of oil around the rear diff. Also, how do you change the oil in the gearbox? Never done it on an S4.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the diff on the car, what have you changed? The seal between the diff and the main drive shaft from the gearbox? Are there boots sealing the diff and the two drive shafts to the wheels?

Just trying to figure out what I may need to change!

Is the oil fill easy enough to see once you're underneath? Do I need any particular oil? I read on here that I should use a different oil to the gearbox, without friction additive I think.

Hes changed one of the seals on the driveshaft stubs, not the main pinion shaft seal.

Depends where yours is leaking from if it will be the same.
 
Folks anyone got the part number for the rear diff seal? I am going to replace mine again as the sump is getting damp.

No drips or anything just better to sort small things before they become big issues.

Plus where is the best place to get genuine parts now? Need to get a diff seal and a few other bits and bobs.

Plus anyone any suggestions on what diff oil I should use as I may as well replace that and the gearbox oil while I am in about it.
 
The diff seal is about a tenner +vat from stealers I've got one ready to fit and any 75w90 oil will do.

On the subject how much oil does the diff take and also the gearbox as I'm going to get some ordered for when I get round to doing mine ??
 
A common mistake made with the rear diff is to fill it with oil until it runs out the hole. So with it over-filled it can blow the excess past the seals and then will usually stop leaking The fill level is a few mm below the hole.

The photos are still there, just right click and "open in new tab" or "view image" depending on browser, and then once it loads photobucket, if it doesnt appear, do a forced refresh (shift-F5)
