And finally!
Here's what I learned in the whole process.
- Ensure you know what the PIN numbers are before starting. For my 2005 Sportback it was PIN 1 live and 2 ground for all doors
- Creating the cutouts for the puddle lights are very time consuming. So is door removal. Factor that time in. Also you should invest in some basic tools. See
http://www.lightnings.dk/tools_en.html. I'm glad that I had a set of plastic tools handy
- The plastic on the door card scratches easily. Take care to handle when removing/working with it
- The looms that I ordered from AliExpress didn't have connectors for earth. I assume so that they can be soldered in given the number to make and model the set supports. On my 2005 Sportback and indeed any pre facelift A3 it's only the driver side door connection requires soldering for earth as all earths in the main connector are occupied. The rest are effectively plug and play.
To get around you'll need a so called DuPont (female) connector (2.54mm). Something like
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252058269888 . Since I was impatient and couldn't wait for eBay delivery I went to Maplin and got these
http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/maplin-01-inch-series-socket-terminal-yw25c. You'll need to crimp the connector to the earth wire (I used my hand haha but a good crimping tool wouldn't got amiss)
- The standard filament bulbs that came with the set are surprisingly good, at least for the warning lights (red). In the picture I posted, two are LED and two standard. Can you tell the difference? I'm getting LEDs for the puddle lights since the filament ones aren't strong enough.
Ultimately, for the price I can't fault the AliExpress looms and lights. It's the process of fitting that was the challenging part.
