"Possible BCM .. need a VCDS log of current 09 unit fitted " not quite sure what u mean there... and do you really need headlight washers :S?

In the UK at least, if factory-fitted then Xenon headlights need to have washers and be self-levelling.
Whilst it is desirable to have both of these when retro-fitting Xenons there is no legal requirement to do so and it will pass an MOT without washers or the self-levelling apparatus.

Try MOT'ing a car with xenon headlights in Northern Ireland without headlight washers! :fearscream:

why not get in contact with T8ups at Em-tuning to see if it can been done and legal as he is the lights man on here . Em- tuning look at sponsors section

I've had after market projector headlights fitted in my A4 for years now, and have never had any problems with the mot, although when bought the light output was dismal, so I went for a HID kit at 50w, now my lights are great, I don't have self leveling or washers, just a beam hight adjustment, after market light about £250 HID kit £60 but worth it just for the look it gives the car

That link is more-so ebay HID kits being installed in reflector lens headlights, hid kit in a projector lens is fine.

I installed the bi-xenon headlights with LED DRL last week. I used Kufatec headlight retrofit kit to wire all up. After coding, the headlights work well. Have some issues with the headlight washers (I don't know how to code them (byte/bit)) and auto levelling system (I don't have a Can Bus gateway to connect Can High and Can Low), so there is definitely issues to solve. But what I want to say to @AUDIA3P is that this upgrade worth every cent and every minute spent. I almost broke my back connecting wires lying twisted under the dash, but how fun it is if you do it first time in your life :) Good luck with the project!

my understanding off this web page is it is meaning it is illegal to put hid on cars that dont orginally have them as the bulbs that companys put in them are to bright which result in more accidents and if you dont check with your insurance company first , and if you are at fault for a crash your policy could be invalid due to the modification you have performed as you didn't tell your insurance .
Now only reason i know this first hand was i bought a 2nd hand S3 04 plate and it looked like a Drug dealers motor front windows full tint and backs the same , 3" tailpipe and a sound like a fog horn , Bought from a very reputable company in Aberdeen , i was stopped due to the tints and to cut a long story short i was told originally from pc plod 3points but once cchecked 6points and insurance non valid so you can work that out why

Yes, HID "kits" in reflector lenses is illegal, HID in projector lenses are OK. Fitting OE equipment to vehicles which have xenon/led as an option is also fine as it is approved by the manufacturer, they just have to meet the motoring laws hence this thread which differ depending on where you are located in the UK .. Northern Ireland MOT regs for HID headlights are different to regs in England/Scotland/Wales.

Darren 92 you say that 'Yes, HID "kits" in reflector lenses is illegal, HID in projector lenses are OK.' as if this fact when that's not what the article states.

My reading of the article is that they state HID conversion kits fitted in lights designed for halogen bulbs are illegal. If it is illegal for the reflectors then it must also apply to the projectors originally designed and given type approval for use with Halogens.

However, this is only ever going to be 'opinion' until tested in the courts and in my opinion it is a pretty poor piece of journalism. The mention of the Insurance companies is also interesting, could we assume that all other insurance companies (majority?) will pay out or have A Ex just not bothered to research fully.
For what its worth I am still with halogens on my 8P and 8V but with upgraded H7 bulbs so no axe to grind about Hids. I will look forward to the court case when the improved lighting on the road, old type approval and ability to pass the MOT test showing the car is considered roadworthy and legal at that point is raised. Perhaps that's why there has not been a court case.

This came out off @Darren92 post about his retrofit headlight washers so if it works bang on for you if not at you tried (
need to activate the headlight washer system after retrofitting it, you need to go to the central electric module (09) and check the byte 20 bit 5 (Headlight Washer Installed). Hope it helps. )

Thanks @ch1z64. I saw this post. Actually, I wrote it :)
For those who read it here first time, please pay attention to a version of your central electrics (CECM vs BCM). Checking the byte 20 bite 5 for enabling the headlight washers is only correct for the BCM equipped cars. Coding for CECM is different.
