Hi, I have no knowledge in cars but I am planning to buy an AUDI A3 because why the hell not. I have been driving a crappy Vauxhall for 7 years now and I think it's time to change.

I want a 5DR Hatchback (Automatic) so does that mean I need to get the 'Sports version'? I also want Sat NAV (must have) and I want the newest facelift model, but how do I know if I am looking at the old facelift or new facelift model? When did the new facelift model come out like what reg plate? I am not planning to buy a 2017 plate but am looking to buy a 2016 plate.

Also, do all the basic specs come by default or do I have to buy them separately? i.e sat nav, cruise control, and sensors etc.

There are so many A3 models and I don't know which one to get. I really appreciate the help.

Thank you!

There is an Audi Configurator app, download that and tweak your spec on there, that will give you an idea of what is standard for the model type. The facelift is a bit squarer looking from the front, interior changes aren't major.

If you're wanting a 5DR you'll be looking at the 'sportback' the old model had a straight rear lower bumper whereas the newer one has a sort of elongated U-shape if I remember correctly. The new one also looks like it's smiling from the front .

The easiest way to tell the latest version is by looking at the headlights. If the underside has a "Z" shape then it's the latest FL (face lift) version. If the underside smoother it is a PFL(pre-face lift version). The FL version was available from around October 2016. If you go to the Audi UK website (www.Audi.co.uk) you can download the latest Price List which will give you the specification and options for each model. If you want any Price Lists for earlier models then drop me a email (h5djr@ntlworld.com) and I have PDF files of all the price lists since 2003. All models from the SE-Technik upwards have Navigation fitted as standard.

Thank you. So anything before October 2016 is the old facelift. May I ask what about the specs all stayed the same or is the new facelift versions have more specs?

I think facelift was available earlier in 2016. I got mine in Sep 2016 and it was a facelift car. When I ordered it in about July they had facelift cars in the showroom.

The facelift car has led drl and Xenons as standard.

You are correct. The factory does the change over between models around June/July time. The October date comes from the first Price List Audi issued for the FL model. There were a few other changes in spec between the PFL and FL but nothing major. I had a PFL Sport and changed to a FL Sport in March 2017.

As mentioned above the easy way to tell a Pre-Facelift (PFL) from a Facelift (FL) car is the headlights.

The white car attached is a PFL with smoother flowing bottom edge and the red one is a FL with the zig zag bottom edge.

Or you could down load a brochure, which tells you exactly what's standard, and what are options.
You ask initially about the Sport model. Unless they have changed the trim levels in the FL, you can get SE, Sport, S-Line and S3 models in SB and hatch. Saloon starts at Sport (no SE)

I think sat nav is standard now. But lots of stuff that you would expect to have on a premium car are options, so you need to do your research.

Sat/Nav is standard on all but the basic SE model. The SE Technik has it as do all the other models.

I like to refer to it as a Chelsea smile ;) hahaha.

I opted for the SE, I don't need Satnav often.

When I do, I use Google maps on the Android auto app - perfect.
