Morning all, just looking at buying some rims to replace the damaged ones done by the previous kerb happy owner.

I think I've currently got 225-45-r17. If I'm buying new is there a size that will be beneficial to road grip and handling? Recommendations please?

Will 17x8 5x114.3, ET38 fit??

Any help would be greatly appreciated as the sizing seems a little confusing and the information I find seems to contradict each source. Cheers

No, Our rim size is 7.5J x 17 ET56 5x112

Depending on budget you could just go for a grippier tyre something like

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 or 3 , Uniroyal Rainsport 3 , It really is personal preference I'm only listing those 2 as that's what I have most recent experience with , I have done track days with Toyo R888's which is a road legal track tyre as sticky as you can get but you have to thrash them hard to get any kind of performance out of them on the road.

Sorry maybe my misunderstanding of the term "rim" but by rim I mean alloy, the tyres are actually in good nick which is suprising as the previous owner neglected her a bit but it's the alloys I'm trying to replace since i think the cost of refurbishment to sort out the deep kerbing and bubbling to the face will out-weigh the cost of new.

So I'm just looking into whether it's worth buying bigger or wider alloys and new tyres if its going to be beneficial performance wise with improved grip and handling or just stick with the stock alloy and tyre size? Cheers

Probably best for you to refurb what you have. Audi would have put many hours into deciding on the best wheel size for the A3 and that's what you have. Bigger and heavier wheels will slow the car and use more fuel.
If you don't like the design of your wheels then go ahead and change them but it will cost you a lot more.

I'll bear this in mind and look into getting them refurbished. Cheers

Not only that but bigger wheels can stress wheel bearings and suspension top mounts , however the standard rims are pretty heavy you would need to look at the weights. Personally I would stick with the same size there are plenty of genuine Audi options out there if you fancied a change.

The likelihood is that as long as you go no bigger than 18" you shouldn't put any undue stress on bearings or mounts, because from factory if you were to request upgraded 18" alloys (supplied by audi, correct fitment) they don't change anything else

Stick with OEM alloys (as already said), there's not gonna be much of an issue going with VW either but as long as they're 5x112 stud pattern, 57.1 centre bore and an offset between (at the very lowest) 41, to 56, you should be fine.

Most of the A3 rims the offset is usually around 50-56 and will be 7.5J width, lower offset rims you can get away with 8j width as they sit further enough outwards not to catch the suspension struts
