Hi all,
I am thinking of removing my cat when I have the front section of my exhaust rebuilt, can anyone who has done this tell me what the advantages or disadvantages are and any potential problems I am likely to come across. I have already done the EGR delete.
Thanks as always,
Matt

Hi Mark,

lm pretty sure lack of a cat, on a car that previously had a cat, would be an MOT failure.

Though I suppose you could remove, and refit whenever the MOT rolled around, but that would get boring real fast...

Obviously the less restrictions you have on the exhaust side, the louder it gets, and you will get some additional power.

I spoke to the garage that mot's my car and he tells me that being the diesel and I guess the age of it I don't actually need the cat and it wouldn't fail but I did have concerns about it.

Had the CAT innards removed on my now sold A4 about 3 years ago & never had a problem with MOT's. In fact emissions actually dropped after removal as it was badly clogged.

Cat doesn't make much odd's on a diesel MOT test other then visual inspection (if you have an under tray I'd say your probably alright in terms of that anyway) and the amount of smoke but if you treat it as well as mine then it'll pass that either way.

The turbo will spool quicker without a cat and be a bit louder, will have a bit of turbo whistle too which you may hate or love.

If your anywhere near Birmingham you can see what you think of mine (which also has a bigger turbo, buckets and b7 front end just to name a few things).

Any recommendations of where to purchase a de-cat pipe, I don't really want a eBay special.

Sorted !

All it needs is a link pipe around £20 .

Some cats come as a one piece downpipe or two piece .

If you gut existing there's always the possibility of the old flexi part failing at a later date .

I'll have to see what size bore the rear section was made from, I have to admit I thought there would be more sellers around as this seems a bit expensive but if that's what it is, it's what it is.

Had this section done so if I go for that de-cat from Darkside I would only have a small centre section to do.

Quick update, mine is not in fact a one piece but has a join just after the cat so I can get the cheaper de-cat pipe, just need to find a decent quality one as the Ines on eBay seem to have some pretty poor quality issues.

Contact DarkSide again Matt if you havent already. Im certain they will tell you the right parts needed they've de-catted sh*t loads of 1.9tdi's

I will as to be honest I would like to get it from them as like you say they know what they are selling and will be of good quality. However they don't actually show any other ones on their website but will fire off a email.

Cool. Any updates?

To Be honest I am not having much luck with people replying to emails, I mailed an eBay seller who has a pipe that looks like it will fit but it's only listed as a 1995-2001 model so B5 and they would only say it fits what the listing says, I then emailed someone I found online from Sheffield but have had no reply and can't find anyone else who sells them. The only company to reply have been "Darkside Developments" and they just require a vin number to confirm fittment but at £225 it seems a little bit steep as I still would need a centre section with box to be built, I was hoping to be able to do the cat removal myself then just put it in to have the middle bit built. I'm away for a little while soon but will get on it on my return as it's one I'm keen to do.

I find that rather annoying, that you aren't getting good customer service.

A lot of the time, the sellers just follow the generic guide of what fits and what doesnt rather than actually marrying up the pipe against the turbo etc.

Hopefully they have a contact number as I would be be constantly bashing the phones asking them to confirm fitment.

Worst comes to worst, ive always liked the idea of custom exhausts and replacing the old corroded pipes with fresh new shiny ones. Which is why I have a full 3'' TBE exhaust now.

Keen to see what you end up doing.

I have had a couple of quotes for someone to make a custom piece straight from turbo to the join in the centre of the car but both have been very expensive so I will be ordering the cat bypass and down pipe from Darkside. I'll do all that myself and then go back to the place that made the rear section for me and get them to do the piece from the new rear section up to the join from the cat delete and downpipe. The complete exhaust will be new then and I can have a little bit of a tone should I so wish.
