Hi folks,
Back on here after a while, nothing really been wrong with the car until now.
Still got my 1997 A4 B5 1.8T and need a bit of stuff doing but I'm struggling to get the parts.
1. LED dash display only "half" working as half the screen has shut down. In effect where it said OK after running the switch on engine check, now just says K. Audi say they don't do the LED display separately, and that this one is discontinued now, anyone shed any light to possibly getting one?

2. CAT Converter gave up 12 months ago and I had it replaced (£400).
Turbo stopped working at same time (been checked and has not blown) and so did c/locking, got to key down the elec windows, lock the doors then key up the windows from door lock. Turbo still not working YET.
It has been investigated on diagnostic and they've hit a brick wall as it looks to be all linked to AIR SUCTION, makes sense.
They've got as far as the Throttle Housing on the diagnostic and it won't let them reset any turbo settings until they get a new TH.
There lies the problem, impossible to get one as it looks to be de-listed again, just to reset the turbo settings and further the diagnostic. Anyone know where to get one or how to get around this problem?
ps. having the 3rd CAT fitted Saturday under warranty as the one I had fitted blew in a few months and now this one is faulty too!
Please help
Thanks
Rob

The LCD screens can be replaced, but only if your clock has digits on it. If the clock has lots of lines instead, then just get another working cluster off ebay or whatever, as they arent repairable.

Sounds like you need to take it somewhere with a clue tbh.

Throttle housing almost certainly isnt to blame. Theres either a leak, or the turbo itself is faulty. Pressure test will find the leak.

When the cat is off, get them to check the wastegate penny valve on the turbo is still present and correct. They often fall off on older/higher mileage turbos, and if that happens you get no boost at all.

The Central locking will be a broken locking pump, simply get a used one off ebay that matches your one and swap it over and reprogram the remotes.

Thanks for your reply aragorn.

Yeah the clock has just lines so will look for a working cluster if I can cop for an honest seller.

The turbo was tested and was deemed fine, so the decision to investigate further with the diagnostic machine has lead them to the throttle housing. Mate says he just can't get passed it and is looking for a way round it.

The c/locking was also tested with a vacuumeter and the fact there were no leaks in the system suggested the fault was linked to the airflow through the turbo. The c/lock motor which is in the boot I believe, is actually ok.

So why would a diagnostic machine lead them to the throttle housing?
Weird

The lucky thing is that most of the early clusters dont actually fail. The later ones tend to go all pixellated.

Its a mechanical throttle on these cars, nothing fancy, its really unlikely to be the issue. I've been on here 9 years, and never heard of a throttle issue on the cable throttle cars. You should be getting a solid 5psi of boost regardless, as the ECU cant acutally control it less than there. Do you have a gauge? If your getting 0psi it has to be either a turbo issue or a leak.

Central Locking has NOTHING to do with the turbo, at all. Its completely seperate. The impeller inside the pump can break, at which point it'll sit whirring away but not actually doing anything.

Like i say, they are clearly morons who dont have a clue what they are doing. Take the car somewhere else. Where about are you located?

The dash or clocks on a 1997 can be swapped without any coding, I have changed mine twice.
As Aragon said, the displays dony fail, but what does happen is the ribbon cable attached to the circuit board is heat clued on, on my old dash it just came off, putting back is not that easy, it needs to be lined up with the contacts on the PCB, as long as the ribbon contacts are not damaged.
I got in a right mess in the end, bought another dash from a A4 2.8 had the same part number, but you have to copy the programmed code numbers and then add to your new dash. This code tells the dash engine type, ect. easy with Vag Com.

how hard is it to copy the info across??
