Hello, I have a 02 S3 225 I've noticed that when driving it slowly or coasting in gear for a while and change down a gear and accelerate a little a puff of blue smoke sometimes might appear does anyone know what could be courseing this to happen many thanks Vic.

Could be any number of things, but usually related to oil being mixed with petrol somewhere in the engine.

What's the mileage on the car?

When was your last oil change - could be a sludge build up that an engine flush and oil change could address. Otherwise it could be anything from worn piston rings to oil leaking into the turbo.

Have you noticed a dropping oil level?

Thanks for the reply the millage is 100k only just turned oil change was done about a month 2 months ago by previous owner I've checked oil level and seems fine would it be the breather system/ pvc pipes?

Has the smoke only started appearing since the oil change?

I've only owned the car a few weeks it was last serviced by previous owners garage who he used, I've only noticed the smoke when driving it like miss daisy coasting in gear then touch the accelerator and out pops blue smoke.

I was thinking maybe they overfilled it, but if you don't really know the history then it's difficult to know.

You could disconnect the intake pipe to the turbo and look to see if there is any excessive oil in the pipe or sitting in the turbo housing. That would indicate potential excessive wear on the turbo bearing. Ideally you should also get a compression test on each cylinder as well, just to check that there is no leak associated with worn piston rings etc.

On an older car with higher mileage it may just be down to general wear and tear on the engine that's allowing a little oil to mix somewhere in the combustion path. It would be worthwhile having an independent garage give it a health check, especially as it's a car that's new to you.

I don't have much experience with the S3 engine, perhaps other owners can jump in with their experience.....

Thanks mate really appreciate you trying to help

Pull the hose off the throttle body and see if there is any oil there... it should be dry but if its wet with oil then it could be turbo or blow by from worn rings...

If its dry then it could well be rings or more likely stem seals..

If the throttle body is dry and its not consuming oil at a great rate then its not anything to get too worried about IMO... if it was smoking under acceleration and the TB dripping wet then you would have reason for concern

At 100k stem seals are a real possibility. Do you get a puff of blue smoke when you start it in the morning?

Just had all the pcv system done on mine and cured the problem 100 %
The blue smoke was awful before !

No mate no blue smoke in the morning mate could it be pcv pipes clogged up with oil? Or I know the guy used to run it on shall v power cos he lived close to the shell garage I've ran it on bp ultimate for the last few weeks could this make blue smoke?

No it's nothing to do with what fuel you've put in. First thing to try is check for any busted pcv pipes, pull some off and look inside to see if they're clogged up. Check the boost pipe on the throttle body as tuffty said for oil. Check your oil level, is it over filled? When the engine is running take the dip stick out, exhaust fumes coming out?

Burning oil is going to be pcv pipes, blow by worn rings, stem seals or blown turbo or it's got too much oil in.

Hi mate I checked the big pipe of the TB there was a very tiny little drip of oil I also took the pcv pipe of which goes to the pcv valve the it looks like it's rotting from the inside out from oil, it's not over filed with oil and not used any oil which i can notice and I've done 800 miles since owning the car.

Hi all just changed some of the pcv pipes that were a little rotten inside also change pcv valve and done a compression test, compression test was fine but it still smokes after over run what oil do you guys recommend on the s3 8l running stage 2? Someone told me it should be 10w40 I know it's running 5w30 at mo could this be the reason for smoke on overrun cos oil is to thin?

People use 5w 40 or 5w 30, there's no reason it would smoke on 5w 30 that's what vag recommended. People use 5w 40 on higher mileage engines etc due to the thickness. Use either of these are you're fine.
