Hi All,

Have read a few posts and opinion seems to be divided on this, from what I can tell, if you don't spec electric lumbar support, the seats (all types) don't have any kind of lumbar support?

So what do people think, is the additional cost worth it? Anyone with or without the option care to comment and share their experience?

When I visited the Audi garage the only A3 Sportback they had available to look at was an S-Line without lumbar support, and to be honest the seats felt very comfortable, but hard to tell what they would be like after a 3 hour drive!

I have had with & without & when I get in a car without, it hurts my back, so I would definitely spec this.

I definitely use mine, though it is a set once and forget option. I guess you'd notice when it isn't there though.

Ye its amazing the difference using seats without, hated it when using a clients car for a week.

Lumbar support is the only option I 'ummmed and ahhhhd' about but in the end I went for it and really glad I did. Can move the lumbar 'lump' up/down as well as in/out AND it's fitted to the passenger seat too which I didn't expect so I would say it is well worth it if you have any kind of back issue.

Another vote for Lumbar Support. Never missed it before I had it but now I would never be without.

Well we've had it in the past but not on S3 . Seats are fine without and you can adjust in various directions to get lumber support just right. So we didn't bother, others will disagree and as usual folks will be justifying their own position. Try both and make your mind up.

I don't have this. I was initially surprised that there was no manual lumbar support adjustment in the absence of the electric option, but I decided to take a gamble based on the test drive. I've now done over 15000 miles and have no problems with the seat comfort (sports seats), but I suggest this is very much a choice for the individual to make.

Very glad we ordered lumbar support as you can adjust just perfectly to the position of your spine, or where you'd like your spine to be.

My previous X5 didn't have it and I realised I missed it especially on long journeys.

So it's a worthwhile option, unlike the through load facility which wasn't as we just haven't used it.

Never once bothered about adjusting the lumber support, it is set to whatever the factory set it to. Has been the same with all my cars. I would have thought having the electric version is way down the options list...

Its an essential for me!

Bad back & it makes all the difference.

Lumbar support is a must have option. However my daughter has just picked up her FL S3, she did not spec lumbar option thinking a manual version would be good enough.
Shock horror her S3 has NO lumbar adjustment. She unfortunately thought a manual lumbar was a standard spec item on the new FL S3, it's not the end of the world but our fault but also some blame on the Audi salesman who I think should have informed her that the new S3 would not have any fitted. Apart from that the FL S3 is amazing and only one day old so far.

I like it.

As a £250 option on the standard seats it's not a terrible price, and it adds greatly to comfort.

Don't forget though if electric lumbar is a personal "must have" for you, that it comes as standard on super sports seats. The super sports are exactly the same comfort wise as the stock seats, but you you get that fantastic stitching and sculpting on all the seats, front and rear. If you've already committed yourself to electric lumbar, then all this leathery goodness is only another £400, and adds greatly to the delight factor of the interior.

I totally agree with your comments, I specced the electric lumbar option in my FL S3 but when my daughter specked her FL S3 we completely missed the fact that it comes with none installed at all.
She is more annoyed that the salesman did not point this out at the time but also that she did not realise this herself.

Also last night I checked the Audi FL S3 brochure and also did an S3 new configuration online, at no point does it mention that there is no Manual lumbar support as standard.
And it's very easy to skip past the electric lumbar option, it's not the end of the world for her but just shocked that a final bill of over £40,000 and a simple manual lumbar is not included???

I totally agree with your last point but as to the first one I don't think it's realistic for any manufacturer to be expected to say what is NOT included. Else where do they stop?

When I buy a new car I do expect some feedback from the salesman, in this case their was none.
We knew what we wanted, and we put loads of optional extras on the S3, I just feel that when running through the configurator in the showroom if he had pointed out about zero lumbar unless you spec the electric lumbar option I am sure we would have added that as well, it was just down the priority list at the time as we were expecting a manual version as standard.

It's not the end of the world but advice / assistance from salesman would have helped, is that not what they are there for?

Ah I agree that the salesman could have given you this information - he would be selling up after all. But I thought your point was that at "no point did it [the configurator presumably] mention it". I don't think it is reasonable for the manufacturer in the guise of a brochure or configurator or website to be expected to say what their car does not include.
Anyway I'm glad you're still happy with the car.

So I haven't specced electric lumbar support - I thought I would get manual. So that's a surprise.

However I have manual on my Golf R and I have it at the no support setting as it bothers me more to have it so I am hoping it will not be an issue; but I guess you can always buy some sort of third party support even if its not part of the seat. And don't forget heated seats are great for back pain.

As others have said it's a set once and forget thing. However I did play about with it for ****** ages. But going through the full range of adjustments it makes you realise how much additional comfort you get when you completely take all the support away when assessing what's right for you.

I also have a bad back (don't we all when we get a certain age?) and I think it essential. It is a cheap option anyway. I do not agree it is adjust and forget though, on a long journey I adjust it so I am not sitting in the same position for hours.

While my S3 is having warranty work done I’ve been given an A4 with electric seats and lumbar support.

My back has been bothering me for the last few weeks and I really regret not specifying lumbar support as on the A4 it’s definitely helped.

Two questions - first anyone have any cushions/lumbar support that they use that I can add onto my seat. And second how much would Audi charge to buy a seat with lumbar and fit it? I have the s line seats with alcantara. I’m seriously thinking that changing my one driver seat may be a good solution.
