Well a quick update after I gutted the back boxes on the Avant. As you can see I went from this restrictive baffle setup...

e90a69549bf948036d538afe2f148f30.jpg

To a straight through piece of 2.5" perforated Stainless tube (Sorry I didn't take any pics after the one above) that I wrapped in a layer of stainless steel wire wool and then packed the remainder of the back box with glass fibre loft insulation. I used glass fibre insulation as it's an oil burner and the back boxes in theory won't reach the 600° melting point....whereas if it had of been a petrol I would definitely gone the Rockwool route that I was originally going to go as this is ok for over 1000°.

The reason for going a bigger size perforated tube over the original size was that it would still be quiet on tick over, plodding about round town or sat at 70mph on the motorway....but when under full load it should become basically a straight though pipe.

Anyway once it was all welded back up and put back onto the car and it seems to have lost a funny sound it had when Idling....I always thought that it was gearbox noise resonating through the exhaust as it's bolted directly to the gearbox at the front of the car, it was obviously the gasses passing through all the silly holes, slits and sections of the baffles in the boxes and restricting flow.

I revved it a few times and it was still quiet so on one hand I was disappointed that there was no increase in noise or tone at the front of the car......but it hadn't had time to carbon up as yet.

I took the Mrs to work a few hours later and I immediately noticed that the car was more responsive, even without putting my right foot down....it seemed a lot smoother. Even the Mrs said it felt different from the passenger seat which is a first! :fearscream: No sorry that's not right....that's the second time she noticed something, the first was when I put the new Barum boots on the car.

Once I'd dropped the Mrs off at work the car was nicely warmed up so I took a detour to one of the local test tracks and opened her up.....I was pleasantly surprised that the car did in fact feel more responsive through all the gears. Quite a noticeable difference if I'm honest and it was much smoother through the full rev range.

I also noticed that the exhaust note had changed to a nice deeper tone, so it went from the only way I can explain it is say the letter F once and keep it going. (It sounded like air being forced out) you'll get what I mean when you do it....and it's also got an ever so slight burble at idle now that it's getting a few miles on it.

So am I happy......OH YES! Especially after I'd heard quite a few that had straight through pipes on Youtube on the same 170 BRD engine as mine and they sounded awful and way too noisy for my liking.

I'll try and get a sound clip done of it soon.

Yes Gaz....I was going to use some Flexible Polylock Stainless Steel Flexi Tube at first until I did some googling and decided on the perforated to keep the noise down.

sounds like another good job done then carl, so whats next then....

Nothing now Rob apart from a new tailgate as it's had an awful little crease/dent in it next to the Audi rings. And maybe a respray to get rid of the awful water based paint and some nice 2k paint on it.

And get the torsion value set as it's out a little out but that will have to be done regardless when I replace the timing belt etc later that s year.

Good job, did you cut a window in the back boxes to remove there innards?
We considering doing this with mine by doing that from the top of the box.
After reading your info I think I'll definitely stick with a perforated inner pipe.

Yes Al I did it as a window.....when I'm on the PC tomorrow I'll post a link of where I got my perforated pipe and stainless Steele wire wool from.

For the sake of a few hours work it has to be one of the best cheap and unseen mods I've done.

I had to go and pick the Mrs up from work earlier as she's been sent home and she has shocked me with another as she's even said the car sounds as if it's purring now.

Heard an A6 straight pipe done on same engine. Got also 2.0 170 and was considering this mod.
It sounded nice , low when idle but noticeably louder when revs added.

My Mrs would go for it. She would noticed it straight away and send me off to garage as something if not right. Lol.

Curious to hear the sound of your car now as parts and insulation have sense.

I'll get one up soon Ian. Trying to sort something out to record it as I don't really want to strap my iPhone 7 Plus to the back bumper with Gaffa tape

I'm hoping to get something sorted out for tomorrow fingers crossed.

A link to the bits needed would be great Carl!

Bits needed....

5m Stainless Steel Wire Wool

2.5" T304 Stainless Steel Perforated Tube 1 Metre

If you wrap the wire wool like I did you will basically use every bit of it.....I also noticed that if when wrapping it around the pipe you continue to turn it in the direction of wrapping it will hold onto the pipe quite well.

And as for the perforated pipe.....I was going to go slightly bigger than the internal pipework and just as it happened the 2.5" was cheaper.

Cheers Carl, ordered up. Luckily I have some Rockwool acoustic insulation which should be up to the job of packing the edges of the silencer out, reckon if I use this it'd pay to pull it apart and then pack it in loosely around the wire wool/pipe centre!

i'm assuming the same poccess would be possible on my tfsi then chaps....., how big a windows was required to degut the boxes.

It's not a solid slab as such, but a compacted type of insulation. It pulls apart quite nicely, it'll just mean sitting down in gloves and shedding it.
I'll have a proper look before I start, otherwise I'll get some glass fibre as you did Carl.

Get your best mate to hang out of the boot with a mic in his hands. Works well

Ian I don't have mates that brave enough to hang out the back of the Avant as we are all getting on a bit now....still not as old as Rob yet by a few years!

I'd give it a go carl, I am always living on the edge , sometimes a bit too close though...lol

The only way I could do this was to wedge the tailgate open about 5", wrap my iPhone up in a couple of sponges and place it in the net bag on the N/S of the boot with the microphone facing towards the back of the car. I've had to turn the sound up a little as the microphones are shat. You can hear the indicator going at the beginning of the first clip and at the end of the second clip so you can see how quiet it actually is.....

It sounded much better before they were uploaded to YT....

I'm sure recordings don't do it justice. As long as you are pleased with the end result

Quick question Carl, how tightly did you pack in the glass fibre around the wire wool/tube?
Lightly packed around or jammed in tight?

I packed it tight underneath and not so tight above.

If you pack it tightly you should get more sound out of it on idle but I don't think it would be too much.

I may even take them off again soon and cut a small hole in the top to pack it out much tighter.

Good stuff, cheers Carl. I'm hoping to get a chance to get it done this weekend, weather permitting....
The pipes here along with my new ultra low profile Jack, just waiting on the wire wool.

Don't forget to get one of these for where the exhaust connects at the front CLICKY

You should get away with just the one as you don't have to split it at the rear.
