had some gearbox malfunction messages come up on the dash intermittently and in one case my
car stalled ( its an automatic!) 2.0Tfsi

Took the car to audi garage where i bought and always had serviced by them and they tell me its going to cost 2k for a sensor in the gearbox because they need to strip the whole gear box out to fix it oh but I'm getting a gearbox oil change)

I can't believe this has failed after 14 ,000 miles even if the car is 6 years old. Anyone else had this problem?
or know if it can be fixed cheaper. To be fair the garage are offering to wear some of the costs given car is only 6 years old and bought new form them and always serviced with them BUT that makes me weary of whether there is a known issue out there.

Its a G676 sensor if that means anything to anyone

I see there appears to be threads n the A4 for this but can't see anything on the A5 Mine is an 11 plate.

Appreciate any help?

Sorry, can't help on your problem, but just wanted to say 14k and 6 years old - wow. I'm not quite 13 months old and nearly 14k miles...

There are some diagrams describing the location and operation of the G676 here.

The S tronic box is a very complicated piece of kit , unfortunately when it goes wrong it is expensive to repair.
A lot of the cost of repair will be labor to remove the gearbox strip it to get at the sensor and reinstall it is not the work of 5 minutes. The actual part is probably quite cheap.
There are many people that have had issues with the S-Tronic boxes it's usually a problem with the main Mechatronic unit though.
You could take the car to a transmission specialist and probably get the work done cheaper as they wouldn't be charging the same labour rate as Audi do.
The A4 and A5 drivetrains are the same so anything on the A4 will apply to the A5. They use the same gearboxes and transmission.
I presume they have gone through the process of calibrating the sensor which may resolve the issue if the problem is due to a small amount of wear in the system.

1- Calibration of gear sensor -G676.

The gear sensor is a travel/position sensor system which determines the positions of the selector lever. When calibrating the gear sensor -G676, the measured values of the travel sensor and the settings of the selector lever are balanced in the control unit.

Calibration required in case of:

I Replacement of the selector lever

I Replacement of the mechatronics/control unit

I Manipulation of the selector lever/cable/parking lock lever.

Requirement: Engine off, no fault relating to the selector lever in the memory, selector lever in P, electric parking brake active, gearbox oil temperature 20°C - 60°C.

Hi Desertstorm,

Thanks for above info. Is it worth me getting them to replace all the other sensors while they have the gearbox stripped down as I'm thinking if this one has gone then others may be equally as corroded/malfunctioning etc. Im thinking long term of I have to spend this amount of money on a fix then it might as well be long lasting rather than another sensor going in say 6 months?

Part of me just wants to sell the car now even though I love it I hate when cars go wrong.

If it's cheap enough to replace other sensors then it might be worth biting the bullet.

Alternatively I'd ask them to conduct a health check on the gearbox in full whilst they've got it stripped down and seek guidance on what may need replacing and ultimately gain some assurance that it is in fine working order (following inspection/fix). In addition, it may be worth asking whether they can provide warranty cover (ideally extended cover, for free hopefully) for the gearbox as a whole as opposed to just the sensor they replaced - may give you some peace of mind (no guarantee replacing all sensors won't result in issues down the line).

Good luck whatever you decide.
