My project/money drain.

Time to buy that vcds cable then. Back on the bike next week. I did 106 miles on it last week :sadlike:

I just swapped back to the old maf sensor/housing and runs sweet so for now that's how it'll stay. Took it for a quick test drive about 2 miles and it all seems good. Obviously I didn't give it any abuse but it spooled up nicely and the wastegate was doing it's thing. Looked under the bonnet and it seems very hot, although it's only the new hot side that's discolouring but it just panicked me a bit that that feed adapter wasn't supplying enough oil. Is it definitely 1.5 mm needed? Just me worrying i expect.

All done! It's now ready for mapping. New headlights are in but I have some bits missing by the looks of it. It's held by the 2 top bolts and the one that's done up through the top of the wing but the locating 'plug' at the bottom of the light has nowhere to plug into. Can't find much info online anywhere. If anyone knows where to find those it would be greatly appreciated as I'm using cable ties at the minute to stop them wobbling about. Fortunately they appear to be fairly well positioned. Also the halos aren't wired in yet but they look very nice. I've decided to wire the halo rings in to the side lights and do away with the single bulb option.
Pics to follow.

the inside "plug" on the headlamp clips into a wee plastic tab thing that screws on.

I would advise against getting it mapped on an unknown MAF. If it ever fails you'll have problems if you cant source another the same...

Engines are hot things :p The turbo/exhaust manifold will be well up into the 3-400c range just tootling around, and can see 800+ when pressing on.

That's pretty hot! I had a 300hp Saab 9000 a few years back and I always remember the manifold and turbo glowing bright orange after a bit of a blast, was really common but a bit worrying the first time you see it.

Don't suppose you would know what those plastic tabs are called? I can't find any info online. Maybe I'll find one being broken somewhere close by.

Not sure what to do about the maf as it won't run with the standard one and I can't get a part number off the working one as he's sealed it in there with some nasty gunk, I would probably ruin the sensor removing it. The saga continues. But it's useable for now anyway. Next step is making up a heat shield for the turbo which looks fairly straight forward (famous last words)

I'll get some tomorrow. I may be able to pick the gunk off and prize it out but obviously I wouldn't want to damage it.
Edit: just zoomed in on an old image. Square peg round hole......

Very similar to what i was thinking.

is that sensor even in the airflow? tube looks rather long!

I presume this still has the huge injectors fitted? Probably why its not working with the smaller MAF.

Update time.

Been really busy recently but found a day in the blistering heat to get tinkering.

Halos are now wired up and looking neat. I wired the rings and the 2 little LEDs in to the side lights and disconnected the original bulbs that were being used. I'm happy but the photo wont do it justice as it was a bit light.

I managed to remove the the maf sensor and took some pics for identifying what it is. It's now sitting in the proper 3 inch housing.

The new maf housing being plastic and very close to the turbo led me on to thoughts of a heat shield. The whole setup means that I just don't have a lot of space down there so decided on a temporary measure and made up a heat 'flap' out of some aluminium gripper plate. Not ideal but it works and as it's quite thick the top didn't need securing. I'll be looking at new pipework and a proper heat shield in the near future to tidy it all up a bit.

This Saturday will be spent fitting a new slip joint on the exhaust as I have a slight blow. A new wastegate with a 9psi spring can go on. And a manual boost controller.

I think it'll be ready for mapping then!

i cant find any reference to that number on the Bosch sensor at all.

have you found what its actually from?
No. All I have to go on is that part number. The plot thickens........

Nice one. Is the rocker cover crackle paint or really grubby?
Crackle paint. It looked ok to begin with but every time someone sees it they say "what's that?" And then rub it which makes bald spots.

you really need to get it working on a known sensor.

What number was on the original 1.8T sensor and the original VR6 sensor?
The vr6 has 468 01 3 A
The 1.8t has no part number on it anywhere but the advert said 0280217117

is the 1.8T one genuine? Maybe its a fake and thats why it doesnt work?
I'm guessing it's not genuine. I saw the part number and bought it but I have a feeling it may have said 'equivalent to', and then the correct number. I have quite a collection of wrong mafs accumulating lol.

Quick update for anyone who's interested.

New boost gauge fitted with a white face to match the clocks a little better.
Both plugs under the seats are now sorted and the airbag light is off.
I bumped into a club member recently and bought an unlocked ecu with an AMD custom map on it, and ordered a genuine 1.8t maf sensor so it runs a lot better now. The only difference in mods was a gt28rs compared to my T3. So I may still get it in for a session on the rollers and see what's happening in there. I believe it's mapped for 20psi which is a bit more than I planned on running.

Couple of questions.

The black triangular panel just above the rear door handle is very bubbly on my drivers side so id like to strip it and repaint. Are these removable or do i need to paint it in situ?

Also I noticed today after a heavy downpour that water was getting in and dripping through the main interior light at the front. Could this just be a window seal? I didn't know if there were drains in the A pillar or not. I have no sunroof by the way.

Cheers. Si.

Sounds good :) Getting it on a dyno and logging the fuelling and ignition timing/correction factors is a must to ensure its running safely.

The triangle unbolts from the inside and then sorta wiggles out. You might need to slacken the window frame bolts on the door to get enough slack to get it out.

The water leak seems odd, not really sure where water could be getting in bar the windscreen itself?

Cheers Kev.

I'll keep an eye on the leak, there's nothing obvious around the screen.

Exhaust is next on my hitlist as it's vibrating and blowing and sending me insane. Then the dreaded snapped manifold stud. Hopefully there's enough showing to weld a nut to.
Then the bumper, which I may have to buy in a different colour and get it sprayed.
I also noticed the cruise control wasn't working and discovered the fuse missing. I tried to put a fuse in and there is nowhere for it to plug into!
I'm enjoying it all a bit more now im seeing results though which is nice.

Good stuff fella.
I changed my triangles for some perfect replacements a while back. Seem to remember one of the originals broke on extraction (i never loosened the frame). They need a good wiggle as stated.
Maybe your cruise is aftermarket? I am guessing here ... but if it is i think it has a different wiring route ? An old s4 of mine had aftermarket cruise.
Is your trim on the top of your front screen blistered? Mine was and when i had a new screen fitted recently i was shocked by the rust behind said trim. No penetrating holes though thank god.

The trim looks perfect. Maybe I'll check the rear screen too as it may well have run forward upon braking.
I just presumed the cruise control was standard so I'll do a bit more detective work on that. It also has an early built in sat nav under the handbrake that I can't seem to get working. Not too bothered about that though.

the TQS is a big odd with its cruise control. Due to being cable throttle it has a mechnical linkage thing in the engine bay which pulls on the throttle valve using vacuum. Is all that still present?

I'm guessing not. I can see where a cable has been cut off just leaving the nipple bit on the end.

that nipple is always there. A small ball joint thing clips onto it, and runs to a vacuum bulb like this:

https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/583710_x800.jpg

The bulb bolts on below the manifold, on a bracket that sticks off the waterpump/PAS bracket. Then a vacuum hose goes over to the pump which is located underneath the ABS unit.

I retrofitted it all to my old '96 car.

Maybe someones installed the stalk in your car expecting it to be easy like the drive-by-wire cars then realised it was a big job and gave up? Is the stalk wired in to anything?

Not sure it's wired in to anything. If it's a pain then I'll leave it, I rarely use cruise control but like things to work.
The cut off cable is just above that ball joint/nipple.
Never mind, it was the backside of the throttle cable. That'll teach me to post before opening my eyes:whistle2:

In other news.........
I just checked to make sure my headlights were switched to the correct side as they seem a little off and it appears they aren't. Ill flip the switch i thought. It seems theyre left hand drive only and there is no way of switching between the 2. More new headlights needed:rage: I decided on the black backed halos. Nope. All left hand drive only!

Cheers Raul. I already ordered some standard ones in black, with the LH/RH switch this time.
I may well have that snub mount off you though if you still have it? Mine's definitely standard.
Also when you finally break your donor car I'll need a few bits of trim etc.

The car is already being broken give me a call with what you need ?

Here's a few before and after pictures of the boost gauge, exhaust/cat, number plate holders and (legal) headlights.
