Just checked today and the 2018 maps are now available to download through the MMI

Mine took about 30 minutes in total, split across two drives!

Might be worth double checking yours :)

Easier and faster to download onto your PC that over the air.

The upgrades are on your myaudi.com :racer:

Thanks for the heads up, that's impressively quick, the download must be heavily compressed on the OTA update to achieve it in 30 minutes. The 13Gb download took longer than that on my 40mbps desktop. The installation then took circa 30 mins in the car off an SD card.

Do you think it had already downloaded the data when you started and the 30 mins was just the install?

Either way I'll give it a go myself when the next lot of updates arrive :sm4:

It may we'll be faster but I wouldn't agree with "easier". If you're in the car anyway and you can click on a menu item that runs the entire process for you from beginning to end without logging into a portal, making sure Java is up to date, downloading the files to an SD card, ejecting the SD card, inserting into vehicle blah blah blah. I'd say if it's far "easier" to let the car do it all itself.

Said on my MMI that it was 1.6 GB in 6 packages - so heavily compressed yes!!

Download speed was about 400 kb/s on LTE (through the Audi SIM). Installation took about a minute! Maybe it was downloading in the background and only had 1.6 gig left. But I'm sure it started on zero perecent!!

Wow, so with a decent LTE connection this is far quicker end to end than the desktop route.

It would seem so - but it makes you wonder why it's not compressed on myaudi.

Makes me wonder if I have downloaded the whole thing!! (through MMI)

Hopefully a few more people can try it out to compare the end to end speed.

Just updated mine, I only selected England North and England South for the update, didn't bother with the other European countries. I think it was around 1GB in total and around 400kb/s download speed, took around 25 minutes from Download to Install.

It would have not been the full package, even with the best compression around you are not going to get 16Gb into 1.6GB, also the decompression would take a lot longer than a minute! The CPU on the MMI system is not that powerful, My guess it's just downloaded the current UK maps.

I downloaded the 2017/2018 maps from myaudi and they took 22 minutes on 90MB broadband connection.

This generation MMI uses an Nvidia Tegra 3 1Ghz Quad core processor, I'd say it's the complete opposite and very powerful for a vehicle infotainment system!

MIB2
The MIB2 (MIB = modular infotainment platform) represents the foundation for Audi infotainment. It utilizes an NVIDIA T30 processor, a quad core chip of the Tegra 3 series, and it went into production in summer 2014. With a clock speed of over 1 GHz and a fast graphics card, it can drive two displays. The Tegra 30 processor works together with a 3D graphics program from the specialist company Rightware to display three-dimensional images.

I know what it is, but it's still not powerful enough to perform decompression quickly on large files. Also the internal HDD is still disk based, so again that would never have the throughput to decompress a 16GB file quickly. It's why I made the comment that it's only a partial update.

Sorry mate, didn't mean any offence, I thought people may be interested if they weren't aware of the spec, as its a pretty capable system with a very credible chipset.

I'm running the risk of taking this way off topic anyway, I think we can all agree it's nice to have the ability to let the car do all of the work, regardless of how long it might take to do so. There are a lot of people out there who wouldn't know where to start with the desktop download, so it's a good step in the right direction in simplifying the entire process.

I can confirm it's not the full package. When updating in the car there is an option to select regions, by default it selects either UK North or UK South. You can go into the menu and select all of the other European countries as well if you want to download these but they aren't downloaded by default. Mine was downloading at around 500 kb/s.

Yep, I actually tried to download the other countries afterwards but it just directed me to myaudi.com so maybe they only offer the local countries (plus south germany weirdly) over the air?

I used to think of myself as reasonably PC literate (not a rocket scientist, more common sense literate), but then I came across Audi!!! Can someone please give me some guidance as to how to get the map updates? I go to MyAudi/Map Update, select "Complete package" then Prepare package" After this I get a ".jnlp" file which I can either keep or discard. I assume I keep this, but then what? Someone help me please!!!?

Got it! Java needed updating!!! Thanks.

I seem to remember something about a limited number of updates included in the 3 year initial contract. Does anyone know how often these map updates are released?

5 updates which I believe are released in 6 monthly cycles. I've had my car 2 months, but have just run the latest download as the maps in the car are way out of date. Took 2 hours to get 13.4gb from MyAudi to SD card (kids were streaming video last night!), haven't tried loading to car yet

So if anyone's interested the SD card update in the car (13.4gb) takes between 20 to 30 mins. That's for ALL European regions (Inc UK North & South).

Today I got a prompt on the MMI saying updated version of maps available.
Listed and pre-ticked were UK North & South as well as France.
Just been in France so I assume it has the 'intelligence' to add countries/areas visited to the update list.
I left the car updating in the car park and on first re-start it wanted to know account password info, which I don't have with me. Backed out of the scrren and it seems to have worked OK since. Can't face going through that security thing again.

I have a problem and i cant find a solution!

I updated my maps in 2016 no problem download to an SD card and load to the car. Trying to download the file now via myaudi, gives me the option to choose what package (i just choose Great britain which is a 1.2gb file) click prepare package and it gives me some stupid jnlp file, i have tried firefox and internet explorer both gives the same file, updated my java - same problem. Any tips?

Is there a link you could post please?. I have looked on the Audi UK web site & for the life of me can't find the area to download the map?. Did it fine last year but on the ''new look'' site i can't find it?.
