My new C5 S6 Avant - V8 family car

You never know he might have a few more customers on the go after your last post. I think 300mm is the biggest I'll be going on the back though. Any time I ask gsf for discount off something they say it doesn't apply to that component or it doesn't apply to Northern Ireland so I just buy from local or shops I know like MTEC, car craft, eurocarparts the odd time, tps, you get the picture.

i spoke to a mate in a metal shop about getting some 12mm plate offcuts and he said draw it out and he'll drill the holes too. result!

And he gave me these :)

So got it back in and wheels off

All just bolted straight together, no mods :)

as suspected the pad doesn't quite swipe the bottom hole, it's gonna look a bit odd, if I'd just have used plain discs then it wouldn't show at all

onto the same the other side

I wasn't going to re order any stickers, but remembered they came in packs of 3 first time around so had a spare, though a bit big

they sit just as they did to the standard discs

I noticed that the handbrake cable was melted through from rubbing on the exhaust last time I was under there.
and it cept sticking on

was a nightmare to get to. There's two big exhausts, then a heat shield, then a prop, then another cover, then the the handbrake cable comes through the floor. started searching

Bit grotty

And threaded it out

new and old

This bracket had broken which is why it was resting on the exhaust. so cable tied the new one up

and it's scraped off a perfect circle

had a bit of a intermittent problem with the starter, only once every few weeks it would click like it's got a flat battery, or do one revolution and stop. it's got more of a weekly thing so thought I'd sort it before I got stuck somewhere.

back in the unit

Eventually found it buried up in there above the pringle sized oil filter and everything else

to get to the top bolt you have to go through the wheel arch, which is a no go with the monster brakes filling the wheel well

even them had to get a lucky bendy spanner on there

a few hours later I finally had it out

And a the new one in :)

my mirror switch suffered a fatality the other day and lost its top hat so got a replacement

I thought I gave myself a lot of work with my car!!

Fair play sticking at it and fixing everything that has gave you trouble along the way

great looking and I'm sure it sounds great!!

Hello Ron! Couldn´t help responding to your amazing thread about your vehicle..I live quite far from you but I own an almost identical vehicle as the one you have in your possesion..and I have suffered almost the same problems. Almost made me laugh when I scrolled down page after page. Your wheels look amazing and I have recently made a bid for the exact same spec wheels on the market here in Sweden..

Thanks everyone. Glad you're enjoying progress. Great looking car Michael, looks very tidy. Mine does show it's age now as it's just a family work horse but it's a great all round car, and keeps me busy :friendly wink: may even treat it to some paint this year if it's good.

Just spent the last few days going through this thread.... Bookmarked as holy grail s6.

I will be definitely messaging you for advice/guidance when I start tackling my s6.

Brilliant build

And NO my car is also a family ( three kids )"in between" trips to the woodshop and ordinary daily use but I do have a spare car to use since there is always something to fix. For example my engine needs to be changed since I have a sound which is not normal and needs to be fixed. Started to sound shortly after I bought it but then went away for sometime. Sounds like knocking from the passenger head side in the back region of the head. It keeps the same frequence but I will give a short story:

Soon after it strarted to sound I went back to the mechanics whom I bought it from since they had just changed the whole cam package with rollers , tensioner and rubber and water pump. They had also changed tensioners, chain and guides in each head. Hence I bought it since it was really tidy in the book and only two owners after being shipped here from Germany in 2004. When I then went back with it the tore down the whole cam system again and I even was there to have a look afterwards. Then the following things happened:

1. Changed a few hydraulic lifters and checked all the timings and tensioners
2. Put it back toghether, started it up and voila it was quiet..for a while..then it all started again.

I got tired with the shop people and tore it down myself and then:

1. Changed to rest of the hydraulic lifters aming with the tensioner ( not the chain since it was new ) and yes they are expensive here too!!!
2. Lifted the intake manifold and changed the two retention oil valves to each head since i thought that they might have some malfunction in them which affected the oil supply.
3. Blew through the head with compressed air since I might figured some stoppage somewhere in the head and that it affected the pressure and iol flow since the passenger side head is the last point to be supplied in the oil supply line of the engine.
4. Changed tthe oil pump among with new gasket for the oiltray.

Started her up and VOILA she ran just fine and dead quiet. Drove her for the next month almost daily and then one morning when i started at work the knocking / ticking was back again!!!!

So now here I stand. Have just shifted the oil for the tenth time the last few months. And Ihave tried them all..fully synthetic, semi- and even mineral but no difference in sound. I now just poured in 5W-50 fully synthetic and I think the sound is a bit more quiet but not normal.

Anyone had the same probs??

Greatfull for ideas since I tomorrow will depart a few miles to have look at a used engine which is very affordable and sounds promissing

I am suspecting that the rocker arms with the hydraulic lifter doesn´t get enough oil supply. That is because the canal you can see that runs from one "pipeline" with rocker arms at both intake- and outlet cam is dry when i pull the camcovers. It is supposed to run oil between them allowing the lifters to bleed. Even started the engine without the cover and there was no oil spitting out of the holes. All the supplyholes for the cam runs oil through them but NOT the two holes shown on the picture..the ones with a thin oily coloured line between them..

This is the last resort I have..can´t think of anything else to change. The engine can´t be worn out since the sound has gone away two times completely and the comes back again..Have done a leak-down but nothing abnormal there either. Once i tore the undertray and checked the filter I could see a small "metallcolour" in the last of the dripping oil. But I believe it is there because something hits something and not because the engine is worn out. But who knows..

Sorry to hear of your problems. I am somewhat relieved that i am not the only one to have such troubles.

A very common problem with these engines is our drivers side, your passenger side, chain tensioner to start to fail and rattle. That would have been my first suggestion if you hadn't have have such a explanation. It looks like you have gone much deeper than that. You say you replaced the chain tensioner and guides, did you use a genuine audi part? I have read of unbranded ones work, but not lasting very long before rattling again. Hence I paid the massive £500 per tensioner.

if that doesn't apply then it does sound like an oil starvation problem but I'm not sure why that would be. if I had this problem I would have done the same sequence of investigating that you have done. sorry i cant help but keep at it. It sounds like the worst type of problem in the fact that you think you have finally fixed it, but then just as you relax it returns.

What about the lifters themselves or the valve springs? Also do the valves run freely in the guides? Put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the side of the head to check oil pressure. Final analysis would be to block off all other holes and supply oil at pressure with the head of the engine to observe the flow from the holes im question. Is it the two at a slight angle to horizontal just below the largish hole? Sorry Ron.

Sorry Ron, I will respond here this time Ron since someone else might find it uesful or has a solution to the problem. If it is not alright by you I will remove and start separate thread..

Spent the whole evening in the garage and it seems to be as earlier discovered problem..

Pulled the cover of both heads an compared the lifters..the right side ones are NOT being filled. They are soft although I have changed them to new ones. The pipes that supply them are not being filled up with oil as shown..
IMG 0123

Compared with the other head which was flooded with oil when I removed the big cam cap..rocker arms were rock hard from earlier oil supply and showed no tendency to fade when pushed. These ones are NOT changed

IMG 0121

I have studied the short version of the engine and it seems as if the oil is supplied as shown in the document below..

Upload 2017 6 10 1 54 9

NOTE: Showing the oil supply for the heads. Any suggestion what the “throttle” just below the tensioner is for? This is maybe where the problem is located. Maybe something is stuck there. Seems like the supply goes two ways - to the cam caps in a line of its own and then in a line to the tensioner and then down to the rocker arms and finally lifters. The caps are getting oil as I have started the engine with them of one by one as well as blown compressed air. The tensioner is getting oil as well since it keeps the chain tight and floods plenty when I ran the engine without the valve cover..

Seems my options are two:
1. Buy a new engine and swap them over the next month..
2. Try to blow air again and remove the manifold to completely set the head as free as I can in regards to the main supply line for the right head and try to blow and flow to check again for old silicone since I noticed some idiot before had used quite a lot around the valve cover to seal it as well in the bottom oil pan tray..

Will get back as soon as possible..

Note that I also changed both "oil retention valves" as shown on the engine display..they are located below the inlet manifold..

very strange. it does certainly sound like oil starvation to that head. and if the other head is full of oil and fine it must be a problem AFTER it splits, around where the spray jet valve is, not anything to do with the pump or filter. anew engine sounds extreme. could you not get a new head? or at least get it off and cleaned out? it does look like you have a blockage between the spray jet valve area and the cams. which in real terms must only be a few inches.

Something that's been getting worse lately is the rocker covers are leaking a bit and it seeps onto the manifolds with it being a V and stinks!

I did put new gaskets on it when I got it, but with all the cam chain problems i had they were on and offf and on and off a load of times. so got a new set. £100 of gaskets here!!!

I got the tensioner gaskets too as they were used a few times

I've done 18k miles now since getting the car and fitting the lpg. I fitted bosch super 4 as that's what audi fits to them. after that I read that multi electrode plugs aren't great for lpg, lpg is harder to ignite than petrol, so it needs one good big spark, which the bosch super 4's aren't great for. but i'd just fitted them so left them. General consensus is that the lpg specific plugs aren't great and overpriced, the highly recommended ones are NGK iridiums. so as I'm stripping the coilpacks off I thought I'd change them

so in it comes

covers off

air filter need to be next on the list too. 18k old too

luckily the lpg pipes are all on quick release who h makes it so much less hassle

and off

it was leaking at the back, not under the tensioner luckily, as that's a cams out job, but it was leaking from the end cam cap and core plug. and generally seeping from the rocker covers

so cleaned those up and applied some sealer round the joins

new gaskets on

and all back on

old plugs out

vs the new iridium ones

onto the other side, a lot more congested this side. quick release lpg pipes again

again was leaking from the rear core plug again

still makes me chuckle that these use the same heads both sides just turned around. so there's cam sprocket holes both ends lol.

and going back together

all good. gave the Lpg a recalibrate with the laptop and WOW OH WOW!!!!! It is driving like a different car on lpg now. there always used to be a bit of a delay on the throttle when you stamped down on the throttle. I always put it down to the fact that the lpg system is a piggy back system and gets it's input from the petrol injector wires and then processes the pulses and sends it to the lpg injectors. but now that has disappeared. throttle response is now just as good as petrol! you stamp on the throttle pedal and it just picks up and goes, there's used to be a second lag and then goes. it pulls harder flat out too.

I can't believe I've just been making do these last 2 years thinking that's just how lpg is!

Hi Ron,

Is the gapping on the plugs the same as with petrol? I have an automotive gas systems lpg set up to fit and find the laptop bit very interesting. Mine is DREAMXXI version. Did you get the software with the kit? I could google mine and get it from manufacturers website maybe.

Thanks.

Hello again!
Yes i will attend to the head with the starvation and try to clean it either a bit more than last time or even pulling it of. To the other end of the story I went to have a look at an compete engine for sale just next dorr to where I live, what are the odds?!? Have found three engines for sale in germany and the demand around 3500 Euro for each of them. The one I had a look at had 86991 miles on it and he asked 900 GBP for it. It was attached to a gearbox which he asked 900 GBP for as well. It had just been repared at a mechanical shop for 1900 GBP just before a was hit from behind in a car accident.

Although I might not need to change the engine I might buy it just because the is very affordable and it is nice to have a spare to pull parts from. But at the moment I am pulling the cams for the 3rd time in the head to try to find the blockage.

the plugs went in just as they came.

I had OMVL DREAM 21 on my Vectra GSi, and on my A4 3.0 v6, my brother has it on his Passat 2.0 at the moment and had it on his old vectra . so im pretty familiar with it. it's a good system, it's a bit dated on the software side compared to the newest stuff but still very capable. you can download the software for free online and get the leads from lpg suppliers or probably ebay too. there are two different leads for OMVL so check which you have, square or long. being able to plug in is very handy to recalibrate the system and change settings. the OMVL software is a bit limited but still has a basic diagnosis.

Nothing much to report, everything is going well, very very well infact after the spark plug change, it really has transformed the car :) :)
I'm not much of a car cleaner, I like a clean car but have as much interest in valeting as I do washing up, it used to be part of my job and I hated it :lmao: hence this is the probably only the second wash this year and the first hoover in 6 months :(
first up was the headlights had gone really milky again so gave them a quick chop up with the machine polisher
before

after

I had seen the project dragons breath talked about a lot online so I thought id give it a go

wheels were pretty grotty, the 6 pots really chuck out some brake dust

in the bottle its clear, but as soon as it touches the wheek straight away it turns pink

and after a few minutes the whole lot was red

I didn't touch it with a brush or sponge, just pressure washed it off and was amazed with the out come. there was months and months of thick brake dust on there and it all came off!

then carried on for a good wash and polish all over. wheels off and cleaned inside and out, hovered and cleaned out all the junk. id forgotten how nice it does come out. admittedly it does look a bit better in the pics than real life, but it cleans up very well :)

the rear disc conversion is working well and still looking good

We went out to a show on fathers day and ended up sitting in grid locked traffic for two hours in 30'c mid day heat and the car didn't miss a beat, we sat there with all the windows up, ice cold aircon filling the cabin, kids watching the T.V's, they didn't even realise we were stopped, and no smell of dirty oily fumes at all (it used to stink in traffic before doing the rocker cover gaskets)
so it can stay a little longer :)

Hello again Ron!

Your car and especially the interior looks amazing!

I fixed the oil starvation problem!!:yahoo:
After tearing the front off one evening along with a beer and some old Maiden in my garage I finally found the problem that every workshop along with AUDI dealer couldn´t or wouldn´t find.

20170705 200233

The oil is being delivered into the head through one line and the splits up into two: one goes directly to the cambearings and the other one splits into two..one for the tensioner and one that supplies the oilpipe that holds the rocker arms. So I started tearing down the cams one by one knowing that the first one to be filled with oil should be the inlet one I started there. Put a bit of compressed air from the tensioner line and PLOPP..look what came out through the line that directly supply the pipe with all the rocker arms!
20170705 200256

The red arrow showing a small silicon piece that was stuck in the hole..no wonder no oil came into the pipe..

20170705 200108

Fired her up after another evening and VOILA all quiet!! Runs so very smooth now with all the chains, tensioners and hydraulic lifters changed as well although it seems like it wasn´t needed in the first place. Thank you for supporting the theory about the starvation!

And yes my wheels arrived the other week as well with Michelin Pilot Sport 265/30/20..the will never part from the car!

All is good in audi world. I replaced the air filter, and gas filters, because I think I'm going to get a remap stuck on it, did the pollen filter too as it was a bit damp

back in the g-unit

new and old

and the gas filters too

still looking cool, but watch this space..........

As sweet as the S6 looks in all the pics I upload, in real life it is starting to show it's age. the previous owner was away a lot of the time so it sat on his driveway most of the year, combine that with 15 years of top speed stone chips and general wear and tare, and 2 years of me living out in the countryside using it as a family car for all duties, it's defiantly a 10ft car now! (looks stunning from anything over 10 feet away).
The paint is as silky smooth as it looks on the pics, I've flat and polished the car many times now and it is getting pretty dam thin.

To be honest the car is still in fantastic condition, and 'normal' people still can't believe it's 16 years old and say it looks brand new...... but I guess I'm not normal LMAO.

a complete dog as you can see lol

the skirts are the most peppered

bumps on the bumpers

scuff on the rear arch that has always been there, i just touch it in

you can see the rear wheels are very stonechipped as well

corroded trims too

the passenger side has parking dinks all down it, but they don't really show up in pics

the bonnet shows the most where the top coat is starting to burn through

and some on the arches

pretty much all the damage and dents were there long before i bought it, nothing bad, but lots of little bits

but enough was enough and as i work in one of the top custom bodyshops in the area I made the spare of the moment decision to sort it, ready for the low collective show on 10th Sep!

so got it in

and stripped

there was a little crack at the front of the passenger front wing that's been there for years

as id always suspected, a slab of filler was in there

grinded it all off and it was only so thick because they hadn't pushed the dent out, they'd just filled over the damage, so a bit of metal finishing later it just needs a nice light skim

brakes and tyres are getting low again, i can't fault the car, i drive it like a hot hatch every single day, it flys round the countryside and outbreaks everyone, you'd never know it's pretty much 2ton!!!! but it certainly takes it's tole on the pads and tyres.

2 tons, mega low, high offset, drive it to its limits, eats tyre inner edge on the front

here's the passenger rear arch, notice most of my pics are driver side usually lol

started peeling off the protective sticker and they've done a fantastic job, you can see how bad the unprotected part is

handles and filler off

front end off. bonnet will come off later

bumpers and skirts all off

and back on the floor on my spare 19s so I can get the 20s powdercoated

so that's the plan! respray from the windows down all round.

will start on the prepping tomorrow :)

Had the dent man out today, the car was covered in parking dents, mostly down the passengers side but there were some on every panel pretty much. even the roof!

he did a fantastic job. it looks brand new, not a single dink now. it might seem wierd getting a dent man out before a respray, but this save a whole load of filling, rubbing down, priming, rubbing down, prepping then paint. it saves time, materials and money. a quick DA down and most of the car will be ready.

could almost get away with not painting it if it wasn't for the stone chips

the skirts are in the worst condition of the car

front bumpers pretty chipped too

started sanding

audi put the clear protective film on the little triangle and it worked perfectly, not a single chip underneath. I'm going to try and do the whole thing though

and bumpers and skirts all ready for primer

I forgot how much I hate prepping :lmao: I'll start on the car repairs Monday.

sent the wheels off for a referb, they wernt too bad, odd knock, with these tyres you can catch the rim on a drop kerb

the rears are stone chipped to **** from a drifting incident that got out of hand

so they're off for powder coating

started rolling the front arches to try and get a few more mm to see if I can squeeze some camber arms on the front. could only do the front half as it hit the caliper

so whipped the calipers off and got all the way round.

both sides

gave the old dodgy repair a skim and started blocking down the rough paint on the doors while that was drying

the rear arch was a bit wobbly so squared that up

and that's all the filler work done.

time for primer next :)
