Ac not working

Audi A4, 1.9TDI, B7


My AC stopped working approximately 8 weeks ago, the econ light would not go out.


I got it regassed to 500g and the econ light went out, however the air was not cold enough - ac not working


Approximately 2 weeks ago i got the ac gas level checked again as the Econ light would not go out for the second time, the gas had dropped to 275g, this was regassed to 500g and again the light now goes out but with no ac


The two ac pipes under the hood are not getting cold and i have noticed that the clutch is always engaged, econ light on or not. When you try and manually turn the clutch, it does not move



What are your thoughts?
 
For the system to loose approx half its charge of refrigerant you obviously have a leak. I would recommend getting a AC specialist to pressure test the system, if this doesn't detect the leak then ask them to use a UV dye and a electronic refrigerant detector to check the evaporator through the internal air vents. Once the leak is detected they will give you a quote to repair the leak, could be anything from a cracked o ring, split pipe or damage to the condenser.

When the system is leak free and fully charged they can check the performance of the compressor, lots of modern compressors don't have a clutch and will permanently turn, these compressors have internal valves which vary the amount pressure they produce.

Thanks for this information. With the first charge the dye was put into the system

Guess I just need a uv lamp to try and trace the leak

No worries

Yeah uv lamp should show up the leak, being that the leak happens quite quickly and loses only half the charge, I would check the high pressure side of the system first. If you can't find a uv stain anywhere that might suggest the evaporator is at fault.
 
Pressurising system w/OFN + leak detection solution will catch 99% of cabin-external leaks (depending of access etc). Has this been done?

EDIT: I see this was mentioned above. My bad.
 
Hi
Please see the attached picture. The black centre part (think it's the clutch) is constantly spinning regardless of ac on or off

Also the fan is consistently spinning too

Should the centre clutch stop at all?

I have unplugged the connector to the compressor and the black plate remains spinning
Also the black clutch plate does not move, do I need to remove the belt first?
