Ah man sorry to hear this...hopefully all can be sorted tomorrow

It has to be updated if you want the updated maps!! Otherwise no

Firstly, welcome to the forums.
The SD satnav can be updated, but it requires the purchase of a new card from the dealers, and activation by service technicians. It's not a cheap update, but it seems to be the only way of getting it done. This is because the card is coded to the car, via the factory in Germany
I think I read somewhere in this forum that DJAlix can now update the Satnav system, so that may be an option worth following, but I may have dreamed it.
Whether you make enough use of the Satnav to warrant the cost of the update is a decision only you can make.

ok yesh , I have the nav card in the mmi in the glovebox but it says 13 on the card... so its quite abit of money to get done?ok I just thought you could plug it in to lappy or vcds and update it ok thanks a bunch for that info

Sadly, the going rate seems to be in the hundreds. There are cards on sale on eBay, but others in this forum have found that they can't be activated unless they pay a hefty fee to the dealers. Lots on here take the Tomtom route (other satnavs are available; I use Garmin software on my smartphone but have navigation in the Audi as well), and ignore the built-in navigation, as they get lifetime map upgrades, and lots of other features, such as message reading, phone call handling and so on.
Others prefer the integrated look and feel of the Audi solution and feel the cost can be justified.
There are loads of other threads in this forum which discuss the pros, cons, and cost of satnav.
I have the tech pack in my new Audi which I collected in January this year, with Google maps and all the bells and whistles I could afford, but my previous A3 had SD card navigation. It had 2013 maps in it, and I never felt let down by the map contents. But that's just me.

IMO the in built Sat Nav is appalling. Many a time it has tried to send down a country, 1 car width lane rather than keep me on the main road(and yes i have tried different settings to stop this but it still does it!). Maybe the latest 2017 is better ?

I agree it is terrible. Mine tried to take me through London then North when all I needed to do was travel round the M25!

My A3 has the SD Card, non tech pack Navigation. It came with a 3-month trial of Audi Connect. I phoned ACS a few weeks ago and they were supposed to upgrade it to 12 months. My A3 is now 3 months old and when I tried to use Audi Connect whilst I was on holiday in Germany it gave a message saying it was no longer available. I phone my dealer and he said he would take it up with Audi. He phoned me back to say it had now been sorted and I received an email from Audi saying the same. So that was Audi Connect sorted.

I have just spoken with a lady at Audi Customer Services to ask about map updates. She was not sure of the answer in my particular case and spoke to a 'technical' guy and phoned me back with the answer. After checking my A3 details on their system they told me that my Audi Connect had been extended to 3 years and I would automatically receive any map updates free of charge. It will be nice if this happens but I wonder!!!

The actual Navigation system worked well whilst I was in Germany and on the route there and back.

I think that for the SD-card based navigation, map updates cannot be downloaded yourself. You have to get an 'official' new SD card which has to be activated. I might be wrong but it's most likely still the case.

For the Navigation Plus / MMI Touch (tech pack one that always comes with 3y of Audi Connect) you can download updates to your own SD card, and then they will be copied over to the internal storage and activated online automatically. Other MMI's don't have internal storage, so they can't copy data from your own SD card.

We will see. If Audi decide not to provide me with free map updates or restrict my Audi Connect to just one year, then I will just go back to using my TomTom 6100 unit which has lifetime map and traffic updates and if anything is slightly easier to use the the rather dated Audi system.

I have a 2014 A3 with Tech Pack and Connect. My screen says that the online traffic expires in August this year and both my dealer and Audi CS confirm that they will extend it by "at least" one more year. Therefore I think that Online Traffic and possibly Google Earth will both be extended. But I've come to the end of my 5 free map updates so I'll be living with 2017 maps for some time

I have just sent an email to Audi Customer Services giving the details of what they told me this in the phone call afternoon and confirming that my 2017 A3 only has the standard Navigation and not the optional Tech Pack. I have asked them to confirm what they told me about the 3-year Audi Connect and the free map updates. I have also asked the cost of the map updates if I do have to pay for them. On the Audi UK website it mentions a figure of £595 for each update. If this is the case then I will not be purchasing any updates but using my TomTom 6100 that comes with free lifetime map and traffic updates as well as speed camera data. I will be interested to see what they say in their reply.

This is all correct....

So it looks as I will be going back to my TomTom 6100 especially if the price quoted on the Audi UK website of £595 for each update is correct. It does everything the Audi Navigation can do plus all updates are free.

Iv got an old Garmin as my backup but the best option for me as i don't have maps is the Clearmount phone mount and then the TomTom Go on my iphone. Just as good as the stand alone TomTom and will play everything though the speakers, fade in and out whilst listening to music, give live traffic & re-routing etc.... I read that Siri will be integrated with the app in the next update too so it will be handsfree as you drive via voice commands.

Having said all this, when djalix can activate mine and give me maps I'm straight there!

My 6100 is much the same as a phone mounted on the Clearmount. I have a Brodit mount mounted between the two centre air-vents with the wire hidden behind the silver trim that runs along the passenger side of the dashboard, in to the glovebox and then just a short wire in to the 12v socket. I also have a TomTom XL unit that is mounted at eye level on the right-hand end of the windscreen again with a short wire that goes down inside the door trim and to a connection behind the dash. I use this one to give me audible warnings of speed camera locations. It is loaded with the PGPSW camera database which is updated more than most others. I only have the 6100 on it's mount when I need a sat/nav where as the XL is there all the time.

I have just had a phone call from Audi Customer Services in reply to the email I sent about the map updates. As I thought the original information I was given by them over the phone was wrong. I will have to purchase any map updates as I do no not have the Tech Pack. The chap said he thought these would cost around £160. He also said the reason why Audi are extending the Audi Connect after the 3 month trial period is that they have not yet got the system in place for customers to purchase extensions online.

Now I have to make a choice. 1. Do I think map updates of the Audi system are important to me and am I prepared to pay for them. 2. Shall I just go on using my TomTom 6100 unit (that I purchased for my previous A3 that did not have any built-in navigation) as it has free map and traffic updates for life (via a built-in SIM) and is in fact already mounted in my A3. Not quite as neat as the built-in system but a whole lot easier to use.

Surely you don't need to make that decision now. The number of changes to the map data are fairly small on an annual basis so you could live with "old" map data for x years. My Tech Pack map 5 "free" updates have now come to the end but I think I can easily live with 2017 maps for a few years. Then I'll pay for an update and live with that for a few more years. So the annual cost (amortised over x years) will not be horrendous.
But whether you prefer to continue with your TomTom instead of the built-in Audi navigation is another question which only you can answer.

You're right, the current Audi map will be fine for at least a couple of years. A lot of the road changes could well be in Europe rather than the UK anyway. The Audi screen is good and has a nice dull finish which makes it easier to read in sunshine. I have tried one of latest Garmin units and the screen on that was like a mirror most of the time. I hate using a laptop that has a shiny screen.

I used the Audi whilst I was on holiday in Germany and when I went to enter an address I needed to change the country back to UK. On the screen it gave an example of what to look for as "Great Britain". When I looked for that there was nothing but I went further down the list and found "United Kingdom". I slight case of the left hand and right hand not being quite in sync!
