So this morning i went to start the car and it didnt turn over as usuall on its first click. So tried again and it started but sounded very very rough, so i turned it off and tried again, to which it was fine this time.
Drove for about 20 mins then realised that the air con wasnt working/blowing cold.

Is this likely to be the compressor? And could this have stopped the car from cranking over if it had seized but then freed itself!

Will most likely be the 'clutch' on the compressor - very common fault. I had mine replaced last summer, I ordered the part and awesome GTI fitted.

Is there a way of checking this without removing it?

Unfortunately not unless you have a ramp, basically the 'clutch' is a circular rotor that moves in and out - out off in and it makes the compressor work. If any of that makes sense.

Get someone to turn the aircon on while your under the car, hear the click it's not the clutch, no click it's the clutch.

Personally get a new compressor sent (can get it for £150/200 delivered from Germany) and get it changed
