I've been searing for the answer but have not found anything conclusive.
I have a SIM card slot in the glovebox but instead of paying for a data SIM, I was intending on using my phone as a hotspot and letting the MMI run off that.

However, I'm not getting anywhere.
I found this on a TT forum:

Go into the settings and select connection manager. Go to data connections and in the options select wifi settings and choose 'hotspot and client' from the wifi mode.

Only problem is that I cannot find 'connection manager' option and have gone through every menu option.

So can I utilise my phone's data for use with the MMI (without taking out my phone SIM and putting it into the car)

I don't think I've heard on here of this being done - maybe wrong. But it would be much more convenient to just get a payg sim. They're pretty cheap now.

Connection manager is in Settings, right at bottom isn't it?

Tho I certainly don't have the hotspot and client option on my FL S3

Have you looked at the phone settings? Depending on what phone you have you'll probably have the option to allow other devices to use the data connection. In Android 7 its settings > connections > mobile hotspot and tehering. Theres various options here that allow you to make your phone a hotspot and allow other devices to use a data connection through bluetooth or usb

I think he knows that, but the question was, can you tether the mmi to the phone. I don't think that the mmi has facilities to be a client.

I can't even find Connection Manager - I cannot open Audi Connect unless I put a sim in the car otherwise it says 'data service not available, please insert a sim card'.

I might buy a payg sim and test it out. I'm not overly fussed about the connect features, other than google maps...that would've been nice (and saved me having to use my phone for nav).

Somewhat annoying that I cannot get the MMI to utilise my iPhone hotspot

Yes MMI seems restricted to using either:

- the built-in sim (if you have FL model) which cannot be used as a wifi hotspot for people in the car (unless you get one of their data plans), or...

- a separate sim that you put in the sim slot, this will give you data and the wifi hotspot ability

But I agree, why can't connection manager allow us to set "use phone sim for data" and allow the wifi hotspot to use that.

Or another option as suggested above, where the MMI could connect to your phone wifi hotspot instead.

But what is annoying about the In-car wifi feature is; when you read the info about it, in the brochure and online etc., audi don't tell you about these restrictions, and that you need a separate data plan. (Well I didn't see it before I got the car)
