Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

surely it would be better to check master cylinder clearance with this turbo if it's what you're going to be running rather than checking it with a turbo that you're not going to be running? Or did you check before the decision to swap turbo was made?

Decision not to use the compbrake box was made before this turbo came up :)

I may well revisit the pedal box idea at a later date, but for now I think I've probably already taken on a bit more than I can deal with at the moment

Mega excited about this new turbo, it's what I've wanted for years, and really never thought it'd happen any time soon.

Right place, right time, a deal came up through a good mate, so I jumped at the chance!

staceys setup

Very similar, but not Staceys old DP, just done in the same style.

I seem to recall Staceys had rather nicer welding than this :racer:

Will assess the DP when I get it and decide if I'll use it or not. I mainly bought the kit for the turbo, manifold, and wastegate :)

Cheers Carl.

Do you think there's much that can be done with the dodgy looking welds? I'm told it seals up OK but just doesn't look all that decent. If it's easily sorted then that'd be great, but if it's a pig of a job I may just wrap it to hide it until I have the chance to make a whole new DP.

Its currently on a 0.82 Hotside which will be far too big, so I'm going to swap that out for a 0.6x housing to get it spooling as early as possible.

If it genuinely ends up too laggy, I could always swap down to a gtx3071, but I hope not to do that!

:racer:

Lemonade would have been more use on track to be fair

Short story Daz?

Blew it up.

Sold half of it, went nuts, bought a ton of cool new stuff. Plate diff. Wossner pistons, Gaz Golds, Performance Friction discs etc.

Bought a k430 hybrid. Sold it again.

Bought a Gtx3076 on TSR manifold with tial gate.

Very excited.

450 bhp here we come!

:racer:

Mate that's awesome

Think it's a wise move for you guys too tbf

Surely help with temps and stresses using a bigger unit working less?

Man I miss the scene I should pop in more

Back on track this year you hope?

Im hoping it'll be amazing mate.

Whilst I was very excited about the k430 and it would have been a great step, a gt30 based unit was always the end goal, I just didn't expect to find an affordable way into it quite so soon.

All the previous turbos I've had have been based in small frame factory turbos with hybrid internals, pushing a small hotside to its limit to extract the power I want.

This is a proper sized frame, so will behave very differently. I'm sure there will be a period of getting used to it and learning how to get the best from it, and I expect it'll feel laggy to me at first, but I reckon it'll be worth it once we get the hang of it and learn to use a full 450bhp :racer:

I think you will need to wait until track time to really see if it's laggy though

You'll always be higher up the rev range than you will on road.
Gonna rip though

Nick I go on holiday for a week and WTF happens :yahoo:

Interested to see how you report it reacts on track.

I really hope this stays a road/track car and doesn't become one of the "BT project cars" :whistle2:

Metal is just metal! I'll grind them all flush then re-weld over them to give them a better looking "cap" and make sure everything is sealed. Should be able to touch up the inside where I can reach it as well

Definitely staying road/TRACK machine. NOT interested in straight line motorway stuff. Bends are where it's at.

I have to say I never got to learn the old car properly. Little seat time. WILL change when I move to Hampshire.

Thinking about getting my head round 400/410 brake and wee sprogg goes and gets something mental. CHILDREN, who'd have them if we new the real cost.
On a serious note I think when this machine comes back it promises to be quite serious. (Might even get close to Bill) ???

I know where you're coming from there Ant, too many project cars that set the goals too high and never get finished, and just post thousands of big turbo pictures on Instagram without ever being used!

I've bought a kit that's come from a working car. And aside from a smaller housing, perhaps some new lines and seeing what Carl can do with the downpipe, I'll be fitting it just as it came off my friends car producing good and reliable power.

The car always has been and always will be about having fun on track, and power is definitely only a small part of the picture. But when you find yourself mixing it with the fast stuff in the corners only to be left behind on the straights again, the thought of a little more shove certainly does appeal!

I also really like the idea that this is potentially a 500bhp turbo that I can run well below its potential, rather than always wringing parts out to 110% of their intended limit!

I'm glad you didn't take it as insult because it wasn't meant as one, we've been around this stuff too long.

looking forward to seeing the progress and the car clips of you sayin "holy sh!t" the first time it makes decent boost :racer:

Not at all :)

I'm very much aware that so many people start a project with massive ideas, take on more than they can manage, and never finish it, and that's a real shame.

I've taken on a fair bit here, but I think it's all manageable. it's probably the biggest single change that'll have happened to the car in one hit. it's just finding the time to get it all done, so I'm being realistic. I don't want it to be drawn out over another 12 months, but largely, it'll be done when it's done.

Lots of it is a case of now or never, things like the Diff, so the situation forces some changes. Things I've thought about for years but wouldn't otherwise do. If I don't do them now, it'll be another 4-5 years before I do them, so I'm taking the plunge!

I'm sure the 3076 will take some getting used to, and it'll certainly require some re-learning, but the billet 3076 (albeit in various different forms) is the turbo chosen by so many who go racing with the 1.8T, and it seems about the right balance of big power / spool, so fingers crossed I'll enjoy it once we've got to grips with how it performs.

If anything I'm expecting it to be more tractable in the wet at very low boost levels, as it won't be quite so instant as the 064, which was so keen to boost at any opportunity it was unreal.

I just need to find a good supplier of Brave pills now to be able to drive it once it's done

1m13.6 required to do this.. but this turbo will be same size as mine so no excuses why it should'nt be faster than mine now. Aero, sticky tyres.. should go like a scalded wotnot

Boost leak.
I've definitely got a boost leak.

Or my tyres were cold. Maybe I'll use that one.

Anyone else got any good excuses I can get lined up in advance?

Will be fun regardless Bill! We won't have that hilarious lag / spool elastic band effect out of the chicane now either

Good to see your yesterday Carl! And nice to see you've got a secret project on the go too! You'll have to share some details when you've got a bit more done :)

If you're at all concerned with lag what you could do is straight swap with my 2867

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks SK, but I'll give this a run as is first ;)

The beauty of going to a fully V-banded setup is that swapping turbo's will be genuinely easy now, as Bill proved by doing 4 swaps in a single day.

If in the future I do decide to go racing, and need to significantly reduce the power output to meet any class regs on power:weight or similar, it wouldn't be the most expensive swap in the world to fit a v-banded 2867 or similar, Thanks to the beauty of emerald I could even have both and a map for each depending on what I wanted to use the car for, but I'm getting a bit carried away with this idea now, so I'll stop

I fit into this bucket currently :( The main problem for me is space due to living in the middle of a major city. I have a single car garage in a shared area so it's hard to get stuff done. That and having a 4 month old - it's hard to justify the time. Soon though. I'm gagging to get it done.

You'll get there mate! You don't come across as the kind of person who wants to constantly shout to the world that they have a big turbo despite never having a chance of seeing it all through.

I know what you mean about the time too, Oliver is almost 3 months old now, and I have so little time, even though Victoria is amazing and tries to send me out to the garage whenever possible!

it's just not the same rate of progress when you're grabbing the odd hour here and there. 6x 1 hour stints doesn't get the same amount of work done as a solid 6 hours in the garage, but that's just life.

I've taken the approach now that I'll build it exactly as I want it to be, and that may well take a little longer, but it'll all be worth it when it's done.

The BMW decided to eat another slush box recently too, demoting me to the works van full time, so I'm currently half way through a little quick win project with that too so I can transport my family around in comfort again!
