A3 saloon retrofit folding mirrors

Glad everything went well :)

If anyone else is after the retrofit mirror kit then let me know. :)

Kits ready to rumble.

Cheers

Passenger door mirror fitted this morning and door module coded. Central electronics adapted to display mirror fold on MMI and it works a treat- well chuffed!
I hope to get some sort of guide done at some point but if anyone needs info for now then drop me a message and i will send you a link to the photos and trim removal guides etc.
Massive thanks to DJAlix for all his help!

Firstly, sincere and many thanks for this write up! I just had the retrofit done on my S3 and everything works except for the folding-on-locking bit. I am having trouble finding the right coding in Central Electronics to display the Mirror Fold in the MMI (under Central Locking I'm assuming). Can anyone point me in the right direction or post a screenshot of the right Byte/Bits?

I believe this is what you need:
  • 09 - Cent. Elect
  • Security Access 31347
  • Adaptations
  • (24)-Access control 2-Funk Spiegelanklappung Modus = by look command via remote control key
  • (26)-Access control 2-Menuesteuerung Funk Spiegel anklappen = Active
  • (27)-Access control 2-Menuesteuerung Komfortbedienung einstellbar = Adjustable

I just want to say a big THANKS to Marc (zooankski) and Alex (DjAlex) for helping me retrofit these mirrors onto my car. I approached Marc to see if he would be willing to lend a hand and help me retrofit these mirrors onto my Sportback, I wouldn't mind travelling over to his place in Cambridge to do this mod. After the initial conversation I was talking to Alex at the same time about the VCDS coding and suggested if he wanted to tag along and see this retrofit himself. I needed both Alex and Marc to do help me do this as Marc done the retrofit and Alex to help do the coding.

We set a date and I purchased the bits from Mike at Audi (listers) and was a bit concerned as the part numbers did not match up with Marc's Saloon. I went ahead with the purchase and the day came to both finally meet Marc and Alex. Prior to this we were sending messages on Whatapps to check parts and what was needed for the day and it was good banter to talk to other A3 owners.

Once we got there we had a tea and coffee to rest from the drive before cracking on, Marc expertise and his confident put me at rest when pulling off this mod, there was parts of the car which I wouldn't have done myself (in case I end up braking clips, or snapping bolts off and etc) but watching Marc lead the way and we did other parts of the passenger door. The longest part was dissembling the wing mirror from the cover and the glass as they were all quite fragile and I didn't want to break them. The retrofit took about 2 hours from start to finish to do (with loads of tea and coffee breaks) when it came time to do the VCDS coding, we let Alex work his magic!

After the main work was done, we let Alex crack on with diagnostic testing on both our car and doing a few VCDS coding tweaks. He leant a few new things too about VCDS with MY13 plate and found a few areas on my car which he never discovered on other 8Vs he played with. While Alex was working his magic I also needed my Thinkware 750 camera dash to be installed and Marc offered to help me get this installed. More flaffing around and plenty more teas and coffees we got this installed and hardwired up.

As you can imaging I was a very happy 8V owner after all of this was installed, it soon got dark and poor Marc only had 5 hours sleep before meeting us up on Monday morning :) We both headed our way home and it was a productive day. Sorry didn't take any photos of the process (even though I had my camera with me)

This is a very short video I took of the mirrors fitted :)

No problem Ken. It was really good to meet you and Alex ! .Slightly annoying to find out that you don't need to remove the glass to do this retrofit at all lol! but now i have it down to a fine art :) Just wish i had realised i could open and close the windows using just the key!
Mod is identical to the saloon which is handy to know and well within most peoples capability i would imagine.
As for the sleep, it was 3 hours and not 5 and your large amount of snacks kept me going!

Hi there, fitted folding mirrors to my S3 this morning. All works ok via the window switch, but when I try coding 09 I keep getting out of range when trying to alter values in adaption. Any clues please. Thanks in anticipation

Which version of VCDS are you using to code with?

Keep trying, open and close the controller again etc, mine was doing this the other day.

Using the latest version as checked for update before using it. I'll try again after dinner.

Chuffed with the results so far. Took a while yesterday with the plastic welding for the door handle and identifying wiring route, put passenger side done within 45 mins this morning.

Thanks to the contributors on here

When coding be sure to have the ignition in 1st position, doors closed but not locked and all windows up.

You should have an MMI sub menu which gives you the option to turn on and off folding on Lock.

Managed to code this tonight. The adaption channel on my car is so temperamental with 'it's out of range' lol

Thanks

So I have installed all the parts (the door switch and new folding mirrors 8V5 857 409 E and 8V5 857 410 E) and used my existing US door controllers as they should be compatible. However when I tried turning the switch, the mirrors would not fold. I locked the doors and the mirrors would not fold as well.

I used my OBD11 to make the coding changes in driver and passenger door modules (42 and 52, folding mirrors and folding comfort), also confirmed the switch was working through live data (it shows "fold in" when in that position), also have the the MMI controls showing to fold in when locked. But mirrors refuse to budge. Also tested using basic settings with the OBD11 to do the fold in and out testing and nothing.

Maybe I need to buy door modules now? Currently have 5Q0 959 392 B. I didn't take the mirrors apart before adding to the car to confirm if the motor was in it. I'm assuming I'm just missing some type of coding...hopefully?

Parts:
8V5 857 409 E 9B9 ASP RLL GA MEM (2040.6313)-basis (electrically foldable)
8V5 857 410 E 9B9 ASP RLR GA EC-VERK.(2040.6314)-basis (electrically foldable)

Thanks in advance for any help!

You will need to go in to 42 and 52 > Byte 4 > Bits 4 and 6 = active. Check Byte 6 > Bit 0-3 should be variant 5. That should be everything presuming you have already done this bit....

09 - Cent. Elect
Security Access 31347
Adaptations
(24)-Access control 2-Funk Spiegelanklappung Modus = by look command via remote controlkey
(26)-Access control 2-Menuesteuerung Funk Spiegel anklappen = Active
(27)-Access control 2-Menuesteuerung Komfortbedienung einstellbar = Adjustable

Then just ensure the MMi has it ticked in the menu screen and they should fold on lock and unfold with ignition on ( not unlock )

Just tried, don't think I can get variant 5 on obd11... is that a drop down option in vcd for byte 6?

Also, does that mean check bit 0,1,2,3 or just those bits should all have variant 5 without checking?

If you cannot access the variant 5 part ( which is a drop down box in VCDS ) seems you are stuck. You will need access to VCDS to complete your install.

Bit 0-3 is a fixed part with the drop down box.

Not knowing ODBeleven, other than helping to repair coding that it's destroyed, can you edit the long coding directly? If yes then post up in plain text your long coding for 42 and 52 and I will post back the new coding strings for you to enter.

Thank you Jungle! Figure it was a drop down option I could not get to. Suppose to have a buddy help today with the vcd to do the variation.

But @DJAlix if I can just long code (I can manually put the numbers in), that would be great! Below is my coding.

So got the vcd cable and looks like the variant was already coded (04) in byte 6.

I think my last resort now is the door modules are not working, but make no sense as US models should be compatible.

When I test the fold in procedure, it states "not active" in live data or if I do a test it doesn't fold in.

This is quite the install so far!

Looks like I need to get new door modules as the ...392 versions don't have the pins. Need to look for the 5Q0 959 592 and 5Q0 959 593 variants.

So seems that the US cars, especially the premium and premium plus do not have the right door modules.

If I went to a main dealer would they retro fit folding mirrors for me instead of trying to do it myself? Any idea of cost from a main dealer for this for my 8v saloon?

Here in the States, have yet to find a dealer that will touch the car and put any parts on the car that didn't come from the factory.

Supposedly, the only retrofit Audi provides instructions for, for dealer installation is the parking Sensors.

Its actually quite easy to do the installation, and of you know someone with vcd or obd11, they can code in about 5 minutes.

Anyone know what this connector does ? My original mirror doesn't have this but there is something very similar attached to the door module that a connector on the door trim connects to .....

I had a similar question when looking at my mirrors. @DJAlix was kind enough to have a look through factory docs. It was not clear but....

I think its linked to the lane departure - light etc in the mirror. If you dont have it you attach it to the slider above on the right of your inner door pic.

Thanks Jungle that makes sense - one powerfold mirror and harness that also covers lane departure and dimming glass (that connector is in the mirror head clipped behind the bezel) so I should stick with my existing setup with these connectors from the door trim both connecting to the module and ignore the 'spare' from the mirror I wonder .....

I kind of done a sighting lap today LoL but then began to run out of light and little lad woke up from his power nap.

One other question is did you also remove the glass or can you get to the two wiring harness fir tree clips with the glass up and you arm through the speaker hole (like a cow giving birth!) ?

Cheers :friends:

You do not need to remove the glass you can move the window out of the way and thread your arm up inside. I took quite a few pics when I had mine out, so if u need any help give me a shout.

Just 3 quick pointers...

1) shove some spare clothes at the bottom of the door, if u drop anything they will catch it.

2) when putting door back together and if on your own use a tool box or somthing similar to rest the door trim on. Otherwise you have to support the weight of the door trim and make all the connections and u almost need 3 arms/ hands !!... just makes life a little easier.

3) take special note how the wire from the mirror wraps around the metal support bar inside the door. Get it wrong and the window will get caught/ it wont reach the bung holes in the door.

Not obvious but the latching connector into the door module just unclips and is reusable on the replacement mirror connector.....

Cheers to everyone who contributed to this thread. Just installed this setup tonight on the North American 2016 PFL S3 after getting the parts from Europrice.
As was mentioned, there's no need to wind the windows down, even to remove and reinstall the mirrors - just remove the lower speaker and stick your hands up and see what's going on with the existing mirror and wiring.
The worst part was the handle in the driver's side door card. I'll have to go back to the door card again because I stupidly had the wrong size self tapping screws, but it's holding together well with the screws it had connected to the handle, so that's tomorrow night's job.
I also got the bonus black connector in the driver's side mirror in addition to the grey side assist one - did anyone figure out what that's for by any chance? The only reference to it in the PDF manuals was in GR66 Exterior Equipment on page 358 about removing the mirror glass "if necessary unclip the connector 4 from the bracket and disconnect"... lol

I wonder if that extra connector is for wing mirrors that auto dim?

Yeah that's what I was thinking too.. they're pretty expensive though so I'll have a swing by the dealer this weekend and see if they have a spare lying around to test it on or see if someone knows. The problem is my drivers mirror is an aspherical one because I hate the blind spot on the flat convex ones we get, so got one off a guy in Romania a couple of years ago on eBay for the old A3 diesel I had. Btw did you get the door modules sorted out? I'm not sure where you got your folding mirrors from, but when I ordered mine from Europrice they asked me to check which modules I had and luckily mine were the right ones. Nice honeycomb grille btw!

Thank you @kc1174.

I got mine off of eBay since I could not find any decently priced ones online. I ended up needing to upgrade my door modules as the ones I had did not have the door pins for the folding mirror motors. I was going to try and solder in pounds to the existing, however talked with some folks on the forums and realized the modules also require software upgrades too. I found this out while trying to get the ambient lighting to work, however with no luck.

Thanks about the grill, I changed the front end to the rs3.

Ah that sucks.. sorry about that. If it makes you feel any better I spent $900 on the OEM carbon fiber spoiler for my old A3 TDI and stuck it on with 3M urethane adhesive so it wouldn't come off. The date I stuck that thing on - September 18th 2015 i.e. the date the EPA told us about dieselgate.. went back outside and the stupid thing wouldn't come off so Audi/VAG got that free when I handed it back last December lol

Daym that sucks, next time get some dental floss underneath it and that'll get it all off. Removed my badges this way using dollar store floss (it's thicker and doesn't break as easily).

Overall I think I spent a total of $550 piecing everything together so not too bad. See them online now for low 700 still. My last car had them and living in a crowded city, very much needed.

Still need to get the aspherical mirror for my drivers side for better visibility.
