Can anyone help on how I go about diagnosing why I have lost 4wd ? The car is spinning up in third gear ! Lol

I have read that it won't throw up any fault codes is this correct ?

It should do when my haldex wasn't working I got fault codes get it scanned
It could be a faulty controller/ pre charge pump or a broken earth even a haldex service could sort it if your lucky

ESP light on? ABS light on? have you scanned ABS module?

HPA, blue or std controller?

Depends if you can connect to the haldex controller module... can't read fault codes of something you can't communicate with...

If you are spinning wheels then its almost definitely in FWD... either that or you have really crap tyres or a thousand torques :)

My esp light is on but has been since doing my steering wheel but 4wd was working fine. I have hpa controller which still says it's communicating with the haldex makes me think it's not the ecu.

I have ns2r tyres so should me minimal spin lol

Check for fault codes and also by pass the HPA by plugging the haldex back in properly... process of elimination... and do a full scan for codes... with the HPA in place you can't read haldex codes

Thanks tuffty will try that.

Also I have been looking at servicing the haldex, you can buy a genuine vw tool for like £60 or ebay one for half price is there really much difference?

Well unplugged the hpa, scanned no codes took it for a drive and it's 4wd again :s so there's a problem with the controller. Just need to figure out what it is

checked ABS module?... I had issues when an ABS sensor went wrong...

<tuffty/>

Does the abs module throw a code ?

Sorry to hijack thread but my car doing similar, it's like a car with welded diff, if I pull fuse no drag but obviously only fwd, no faults, and I can communicate with haldex also tried oil and filter with no luck, has anyone came across this before : (

Haldex controller is normally the issue here... will need replacing...

Don't forget regular haldex oil changes... most people don't and this contributes to failure

Well I have emailed hpa as it seems using the controller is causing the car to run front wheel drive, but can't understand why. So will see what the outcome is

I suspect it will be the fault to do with the ESP light... as you said its from the steering wheel then its plausible its the steering position sensor...

What is the fault code related to the ESP? there will be one...

The HPA seems more sensitive to fault issues like this which may be why AWD is back without it... I disconnected mine while I had the ABS fault and still had AWD... plugging the HPA back in caused it to drop into FWD...

HPA will no doubt say the same... I had this discussion with them over the issue on mine..

You will need to sort whatever is causing the ESP light to be on... then it may well start working again

The reason the esp light is on is because my friends snap on computer can't reset the steering wheel sensor after I had put a new clock spring on, guessing you can only use vcds. What I can't work out is why it was running fine before even with the light on ? We cannot find any codes

Clock spring is hardly out by 360' ? ive seen this happen a few times.
