Hey guys,

Just bought an 09 B8 A4 and noticed a small white mark on the speedo. I'm just wondering what this could be or if anyone can offer up any ideas?

Thanks

Difficult to tell buddy but is it outside or inside, did you try rubbing to find out if it can be removed. If not, try Meguiars Plastx or one by 3M works a treat on all plastic surfaces.

Hi mate,

It's inside the glass on the card itself as I noted on the thread title.

I assume these things are sealed units so it perplexing me as to how a mark could appear in there.

Yeah been reading up on that tonight thanks. Hard to gauge but from outside it looks like it could be a mark on the card as in it's been scraped. But it could also be a something benign. Gonna try some compressed air tomorrow and if that doesn't work I'll take the cluster out and get a better look. I just initially panicked thinking someone had been tampering with something in there but upon further reading I notice that there's nothing sinister can be done there. Just my conspiratorial mind I guess lol.

Possibly someone has been in the cluster before!?

There not hard to get into, usually just a a few pressure clips around the outside and couple of screws.

Replaced my clocks in my A3 8P few years ago and was a very easy job.

You could always pop the cluster out and check for any evidence of tampering......

unless the cluster has been out to put a sticker/black ta[e over a light behind to stop it showing a fault eeeep
i read someone on here say how they had issues with their car at garages trying to fix something that wouldnt seem to resolve, and the cheeky gits covered the engine management lights led after one visit, but guy was clever enough to notice it didnt light up when starting the car for the few seconds it would normally on ours.
Just to add some fuel to your conspiracy :)

Like Meemo says, its possible someone has been in with some tape. I REALLY hope it's not the case. It was on my old A4. Someone kindly covered my ESP warning light, I think they were worried it would dazzle me at night.

At least we're setting your mind at ease.

As above, I would get the car checked over with VCDS just to make sure all is OK.

Just looked at my car and when the ignition is turned on the self test illuminates the following. If you are not seeing any of these then somebody may have been in there with a piece of tape. It's also possible another fault light could be lit as they don't all come on with the self test when the ignition is turned on. Hope it's nothing sinister but there are plenty of cowboys around these days who will codge something rather than fix it properly.

You're all a real cheerful bunch of optimists....NOT lol.

All lights seem to showing as they should (or at least showing as I think they should be). Car is 100% genuine, I'm pretty sure of it and I don't say that as mere wishful thinking but basing it on condition, history, previous owner and full mechanical checkover. That said I've been wrong before. But......thanks to you guys and the seed of doubt I ran outside with my torch and checked the display again more closely and it does seem to be something sitting on top of the card rather than scored into it as I seen a shadow behind it with the light shining.

Anyhow I will get the cluster out at some stage later today or tomorrow and hopefully find all is OK.

I assume the trim just pops off and exposes two screws securing the cluster?

Isn't the 20MPH in an odd place? It feels like it should be down a little closer to the mark. I've been confused by it and thinking I was at 20 realised I was actually at 30 :0

You have got to remember that the function of these motoring forums is to inform and amuse (sorry for being a sarcastic old cretin).

I once posted about the back light that normally shines through the "S4" in the S4's rev counter had gone out - there is not one, I was lucky, I got treated very fairly that time!

If you run a scan on that car using something like VCDS, it will return lots of info including mileage or at least kilometers converted into miles, if that removes one worry from you. Many other "okay" reasons why a cluster has been removed, if I was not so lazy, I would have got VW to replace the plastic window on the gauges on my wife's August 2015 Polo, it has a really bad scratch on it, that has annoyed since we picked it up new and she has been warned not to try to get it "off"! I don't think that these windows/covers actually seal any dust etc out from that area.

Moving slightly off topic but has anyone had any good experience removing scratches from the clear plastic on the cluster?

I think someone in the past tried to clean mine with a dirty rag and is covered in scratches, they do not appear to be very deep, mainly surface with a couple of deep ones.

Try Meguiars Plastx or one by 3M works a treat on all plastic surfaces.

Thanks for the suggestions Tashfeen :)

Wasn't sure if there was something specific I should use. So probably most generic plastic cleaners should work then as long as they are suitable for plexi-glass and acrylic glass?

Meguiars is perfect for plexiglass and acrylic glass and so is 3M glass cleaner. As long as you are using the right microfiber cloth, there should be any issues :)

It might seem an odd choice but toothpaste is pretty good at removing fine scratches. I used it on the Hesalite crystal of an Omega watch, and the results were excellent.

Cheers Jeff. I have heard about using toothpaste as a scratch remover but never tried it personally. Might try it on my wife's car before attempting on mine

However, I regularly use my shaving cream as a defogger in winters on my bathroom mirror for shaving

Ok so the white spot is now gone thankfully. Turns out it was a small piece of what appeared to be powder or something like it.

BUT what a nightmare I had with the air vent grill to the right of the cluster. Damn thing fell apart and I spent the better part of two hours putting it back together again lol. The we slots came off as the trim keeps them in place. So if you ever have to do this just be careful.

Now have the airbag light on so will get the mate to check that out later.

I've taken the cluster out of my dash a few times - that vent can be a PITA!

Re airbag light - did you turn the ignition on whilst you had the dash apart ?

Thanks for the tip :)

I will try the toothpaste option first cos I'm a tight git then try the Meguiars and see how I get on.

PITA you say? Not half! I've it well susst now tho after spending most the afternoon mastering it lol. The trick is that when the trim is removed and vent exposed and if it's to be removed you do so by placing your hand over the front left side of it whilst taking it out. Otherwise make yourself comfortable cause it's gonna take some time.

I had the music on so it's likely I did hit the ignition. The mate owns a garage and is gonna stick the VAGcom on the car for me.

Rubbish isn't it. They improved it slightly in the face lift version.

I'd take care if using tooth paste on soft surfaces like plexi glass, it will work wonders on a very hard material light watch glasses though.

Years ago I spotted that some where was selling off their stock of Trico window scratch remover, it was just really a chalky solution, or same as watered down tooth paste, it is that good that 30 years later it remains hidden on a shelf somewhere in the garage - I think, just another "good" purchase by me!
