Finally got audi connect up and running, few questions though. The car has a built in sim but connect only works when i have the wifi on my iphone on and it links to the car, if so is this using my mobile data? If this is the case what is the best way to go about a sim to insert in the glovebox, ie cost and data amount. Read a few topics on this but struggling to understand it completely.

Thanks in advance!

the built in esim only has limited online (connect) facilities as shown on mmi when it is up and running. If you want a full blown wifi hotspot you either have to buy the default "data" package (expensive) through the mmi or connect app? or an aftermarket data sim (far cheaper). If connect is set up correctly it should work without the need of having your iphone "wifi" on and if you are happy with its limited functionality then you should not need anything else - when you say iPhone "wifi" do you mean using the personal hotspot facility? If so, then yes it is using your mobile data

If I am wrong, others will say so!

Yeah this is what i have done i think, i will see what i wont have access to with using the car only sim tomorrow, if i was to supply a sim for my car what would you suggest as a good value for money option is it mainly gets used weekends so not doing more than 5000 pa.

I have a Huawei E577c mobile wif-fi unit with a Three PAYG SIM card. The card charges 1p per Mb for data. The advantage of this unit is that I can take it out of the car and use it anywhere where there is no Wi-Fi available.

I also have one of these and it has an allowance of 3gb a month, i got it with a tablet i took out on contract. Would this be suitable? What would the difference be between putting this sim into the car or leaving it in the huawei unit? Thanks

The advantage of using the Huawei unit is that you can use in anywhere when you want to connect to the internet using your tablet. By putting the card in to the car you are restricted to using the car as your wifi hub.

Okay cheers, how much data does your audi connect yous up a month, would you say 3gb a month would be enough for google maps etc

No idea I'm afraid I dont think I have not used the Audi Connect at all so far.

Just for information I have been running the Tech pack with SIM since August 2014 and my data usage per month averages out at 485MB so the 12GB per 12 months at £25 is more than enough for me. A few points though:
1. I use Google Earth all the time but the data that it uses depends on whether you are often visiting new areas. It caches the map overlay so f you go to the same places then it doesn't re-download. I have tested with and without and despite earlier comments I don't find it data heavy.
2. I do not do music streaming which would be heavy on the data usage.
3. I use the Hot Spot for one device in the car.
4. I reckon that £2 per month with the Three PAYG SIM is a steal!

Hope this helps.

Whilst we are on the subject of Audi Connect, I have just spoken to Audi CS and they have extended my 3 months trial that came with the car to 12 months.
Now I wonder if any can help me with using Audi Connect to send destinations from Google Maps to the Navigation in my car. I've gone into Audi Connect on my PC and chosen Destination entry via Google Maps - entered my Google email address - clicked OK and then nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Dave

Follow the attached instructions on Google Maps below. I have shown my settings but blocked out my email address. PM me if you have any problems.

I have a feeling that I when use it, I use the "destination entry via my audi" facility instead - its works for me anyway
