I've had engine misfire problems for a while now, management light is on, some times goes off randomly for a week or so but comes back on again. Car runs fine, stable idle, got power all the way through, ok mpg, no emissions problems at MOT, however got 'cylinder 4 misfire' and 'random misfire' codes. It's at Audi Llandudno Jct at the moment and they reckon its problems with the exhaust valves but waiting to clarify tomorrow, and expected cost of 1400. Could anybody shed any light on this and let me know if this is a reasonable price or should I just live with the management light being on?

I wouldn't trust that verdict tbh. It might be the exhaust valves but it could be something much simpler like a coil pack or even spark plugs. Audi recommend changing plugs at 40k miles but they need doing at 20k miles max really, and on modified cars 10k miles.

Take it to a specialist near you - I can recommend Unit 20 near Chester.

That doesn't sound right. What are they saying? The valve isn't working and therefore not enough flow through the exhaust that causes a miss fire.... if that's the case then just jam the valve open so that maximum flow is always available to test there theory! I certainly wouldn't spend 1400 when I would be very surprised if that is the issue. Like above when were the spark plugs changed last. How old are the coil packs ? What state of tune is the car in ? If I was you to start with swap coil pack 1 and 4 and see if the fault code moves to cylinder 1 if it does its your coil pack.

Many thanks for your suggestions, sorry, I should have mentioned, I changed the spark plugs and and coil packs over but same issue. I've swapped coil packs around too and same issue. Cars in good condition, no mods, just sailed through mot and been regularly serviced. nluk, where is Unit 20 in Chester please?

£1400, tell them to jog on mate.
At worst it will be a injector.
Get a vacom on it and get some codes for us.
But sounds like a coil pack, as they misfire and flag a code.

Have they done a compression test? It could be a sticky exhaust valve causing a low compression misfire.
