I have recently put a new stereo into my car as the old one was constantly on unless you take the head unit out. I then realised that the guy before me has done a really good job of splicing all the cables really badly (he soldiered the connections and only an electrical god could figure out what he has done) so the back speakers wouldn't work.

Halfords helped me get the speakers working and advised me how to get it to turn on with the key, so all of that was fine but the battery kept draining. I was scratching my head wondering why when my girlfriend got in the car and said "why are the back speakers crackling when the head unit isn't on" problem solved lol.

Anyway, I went to jump start the audi for about the fifth time off my Skoda and managed to connect the f**king wires the wrong way!

Im an idiot... I know. Now the ignition comes on but the car won't start. I'm currently checking fuses but I got told that it could of blown the relay switch.... Great!

My question is, as I'm by no means a mechanic, what to check and also where to find this relay switch. The audi in question is a 52 plate a4 avant b6. If you could help me get the thing starting again I would love you all even more. (And my girlfriend will stop kicking me in the head as it's actually her car until I buy my Skoda and she part exchanges the audi for it.)

Please help me! My head hurts lol.

Hey bud, you've posted in the b8 section by accident.

There is no 1 individual think that could have failed. Even the ECU could have permanent damage.

Break out the multi meter, the electrical wiring diagram for the car and start testing. However if you are not sure what you are doing then take it to a proper auto electrician. Don't mess about, don't go to Halfrauds. Take it to a pro or you'll be spending forever and a day trying to fix the fault of you're not clued up on electrical items and how they work.

No offence, but it doesn't sound like to me that you have the ability to tackle this one.

Right, cheers Benten69.

Quick update, I took out all the fuses, checked them all and they were all fine. Then I unplugged the battery and wired the plugs from the audi battery to a y reg 1.3 Ford ka put the ignition on and no warning lights came on, but when I tried to start it the car felt like it moved forward slightly and sounded like it was trying to start but couldn't do it, then when I pulled the key backward the car went back to (what felt like) the original position.

Do you reckon I just fried the battery?

Was going to buy a new battery tomorrow from "halfrauds" (lol) and hope it works.

What do you think the chances are?

P.s. I loved the term halfrauds as the first time I took it there for the stereo this guy was really really good and helped loads. Then I took it again and the manager guy fixed it all then said "you'll now need to book it in and pay the £30" and proceeded to put it back how it was.... ********.

And you are very right when you say that I don't have the ability to do all that.... I don't even have a multimeter! Ha!

You must have seen some of the relays when you were checking your fuses. With the drivers door open remove the plastic side section and you'll see them behind the fuse board facing the driver -small little cubes with three digit numbers on. You'll also find relays living in the ECU box. However, it's potentially a bit of a red herring as I don't believe any of the relays are -directly- related to ignition. I think there's a fuel pump relay in the ECU box though that's as close as you get for ignition.

The rest are windscreen wipers, horn stuff like that. Google for a schematic and check 'em out.

FIXED IT! No multimeter, just a new battery.

Weird thing is, all it needed was my foot on the clutch then the ka battery would of worked.

It must of somehow got jammed in gear, even tho it was in neutral. I put the new battery in, tried to start it and it did the same thing happened, it just moved forward with the first turn of the key and backwards when I released it. My mate said to out put my foot on ths clutch and I did it as was out of ideas and then.....

AUDI IS BACK!!!

I will never do this again, I'm just lucky it didn't mess up my skoda battery too!

Glad you got things straightened out.

Not really relevant now, but were you attempting to start the car whilst a gear ratio was selected? That's the only way the car would move forwards slightly, while attempting to start the engine. It'll move forwards slightly against the parking brake.

No, that was the strangest bit. It wasn't in any gear but was rocking when I was trying to start it. As soon as i put my foot on the clutch it was fine, even tho it wasn't in gear!

It was so strange but, oh well, it's fixed now.
