My first ever thread il try to be as specific as I can.

My problem arose last night when driving through town. All off a sudden the red light came up telling me to check coolant, to which I obliged. Although the coolant level was ok. So i opened the coolant top and the water/coolant was excesively bubbling out, I refilled with water.

I limped home stopping occasionaly and my oil temprature rose to 105/106 degrees. Proir to this for the last week I could smell what could only be decribed as burnt/really hot coolant. Unfortunately my car is out of warranty by a month.

All replies and helpful information shall be much appreciated.

Next time wait until it cools down a bit before you take the cap off! Topping up with tap water isn't a good idea if you do it too often. You need some of this http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/c...7_1493463141_6b477359c9bbf553d1323486e04c50bd use the code on the website to get it for £3.26

If you have been using tap water for a long time you will be out of coolant which is causing it to boil and blow off. You need the proper stuff as it has additives to keep the water pump lubricated, it also contains corrosion inhibitors.

Keep an eye on the level over a few days, as long as it's between min-max you should be good to go with the right stuff in it!

PS: Your oil temp is OK at that.

I only topped it up with water as I had no coolant to hand. What I find strange is that it was telling me to check coolant level but the level was fine.

Il top it up now with the relevant water/coolant and go for a little drive. Hopefully it wont tell me to check coolant level again. I find this very strange for a car with less then 20k.

Your coolant would bubble/hiss out anyway if you opened the cap when hot even if you had no problem as the system is pressurised. As above, you should have waited before taking the cap off. If the coolant level was fine then why did you take the cap off? not sure what it would achieve. Your oil is fine at that temp. Mine goes above that when going at speed and working the engine. Next time the light comes on it might be best to call the AA or Audi Assist as they will be able to do the right thing and help diagnose it. Have you checked the level this morning when cold?

Iv learnt my lesson not to take cap off when engine is warm, curiosity got the better off me. The red light was flashing none stop. Stating to check coolant level and stop car. Thats the worrying bit.

The coolant level is fine this morning just checked it. Il drive my car as normal. Hopefuly it wont but if the red light does start flashing again, il get it recovered to the local vag specialist.

Could it be an airblock?

This is why we need temperature gauges on non VC cars :(

But, I suspect if anything a faulty coolant level sensor.

The coolant level sensor is in the expansion bottle with the cap on. You can see the sensor probes if you take the cap off. If the bottle is visibly full above the minimum line, but the light is on, then it suggests a faulty coolant level sensor, which is a common fault.

The bottles have a known weak spot and the sensor probes or the wiring can crack, and the ECU loses connection to the sensor wires and puts on the coolant level alarm.

It might be worth just carefully inspecting the wires to the coolant bottle. take the plug off, clean it, check for cracking or corrosion, etc.
