As a serial Alfa owner, I picked up my first Audi, a new A3 Sportback 1.4 TFSI s-tronic, a couple of days ago. Very pleased with it.

Looking forward to picking up tips and information from the forum and hopefully contributing to it myself.

Welcome to Audi-sport.net. Any pics of the car? Enjoy the forum:)

Here's a picture of my new A3. The more I drive it the better it gets. Very pleased with the spec I chose. Finally having a car with an integrated satnav is an absolute joy, especially as it can get locations and addresses from my iPhone.

Hey Kev, that's an awesome looking car. Glad your enjoying it. :)

Nice A3, but do tell us more about the Alfas!

Sure. My first Alfa was an Alfasud 1.5Ti. Great handling and a lovely sporty engine. That got a bit tatty so I replaced it with another Alfasud 1.5 (hatchback this time). Less sporty but more practical. That got replaced by an Alfa 33 which was a let down, with soggy handling and bad build quality. The interior felt like it was made of cardboard (it probably was). Nowhere near as good to drive as the 'sud it was based on. So I moved on to more sensible and better quality cars for a while (Cavalier and Xantia). I got tempted back to Alfa by the 146. I had the 2.o Ti version which was seriously fast (for me at least). Finally I graduated to an Alfa 159 JTDm Lusso which had all the luxury trimmings to go with the power. A high quality car. I kept that for ten years until I traded it in for the A3. Overall the 146 was my favourite Alfa, and the A3 brings me back to that kind of car.

People say Alfas break down and/or rust but I didn't have any bad problems with mine apart from a gearbox failure in the 'sud hatchback. Fantastic heritage, and good performance cars if a little quirky in design.

Alfasud is cool. I quite like the 159, probably one of the best looking saloons ever made. Sometimes I think the new A3 saloons are in fact inspired by the rear end of the 159. It is a shame it didn't come with the proper Busso V6 though. Pretty heavy too, heard that they eat through their wishbones! Did you have the 1.9 or the 2.4 JTDM? I heard some rumours about the 1.9 having gearbox issues, namely fifth gear?

Yes, the 159 is a good looking car. Mine was a Sportwagon, so not quite as nice as the saloon, but more practical. It had the 1.9 JTDm engine. I never had any gearbox problems. The manual box was really nice to use, smooth and positive. It is a big car, but lighter than a BMW 3 series. I did have to have one front wishbone replaced though.

Previous Alfa owners also - 147 2.0 Lusso. No problems with it at all completely reliable and well built.

Mito 1.3 JTD terrible car. Bulkhead rusted through allowing water into the footwell along with a badly fitted air con drain pipe.

Moved to a A3 8P 2.0 TSI which has been terrible reliability wise - instrument cluster packing up, engine management light on, engine head to be de coked, radiator replaced, rear calliper failed, it rattles....

I quite like the Sportwagon, especially in Ti spec! Ah didn't know it was lighter than a 3-series, that's news to me.
