S3 or not S3 or maybe an S4

I'm warming to the idea of S5 coupe/sportback when change comes due....S4 not so much....just doesn't pull on my trousers as much. I'd love RS3 saloon, as that's what I really wanted instead of S3, but I can't help feeling there won't be enough difference from my current modded car. I think TT-RS would do it for me in the fiery trouser department....but S5 coupe has a great soundtrack too and much more comfortable when you want to be more grown up.
@Ad72 I think you should look at S5 coupe or sportback rather than S4. Thats my professional opinion :) lol

I'm having a similar feeling to be honest, I can't afford an S5 so it has to be an S3 or S4. To make the S4 look right I need to add wheels etc and it ends up a £50k car. The reason for selling the A6 Allroad, apart from it being a diesel was to reduce my outgoings. An S4 isn't really doing that, however if I fell in love with a car within reason I'd go for it and I'm yet to fall for the S4 100%

I don't think the S4 feels, or is, that much bigger than S3 sedan inside....it just has a much bigger boot...at least thats how it felt to me....so why not consider RS3 sedan over S4?

Also, you need to drive all the options here.....cos thats when the magic happens and you see which one you prefer

Navarra Blue,forget the sport diff.... "for a 20 mile commute" and add the upgraded alloys.....@joetidman posted this photo....View attachment 124063 l have actually seen a very similar S4 in Glasgow Audi's showroom.....stunning it was...with Express Red leather....a match made in heaven.....but forget the drivers aids......waste of money..... @Joetidman

I do 100 mile round trip, and to be fair not done enough miles to test the diff yet, but you really can feel it working so I guess it depends how much fruity weekend driving you'll get to do

She hasn't driven it yet but she will eventually, and it drive me mad when she adjusted my seats in the S3, it took me ages to get it right again

Nice, but I don't think upgraded alloys will add half as much to car as ZF's Vector Drive unit aka "sport diff". This is no normal differential. This is an entirely undersold, under publicised and under-advertised part of the offering, and its capabilities easily surpass those of the much vaunted clever rear diff in the Focus RS. This offers geniuine active torque vectoring without using the brakes for additional fun and ability in corners, from a design more cunning than a fox who's just graduated from the university of cunning;

With the ability to overspeed one side of the axle, and in extremis, divert all the power to one side, this is a seriously clever bit of kit, and if you're going to the trouble and expense of buying an S4 over an S-Line, you should definitely get it.

I got a text from Mrs H this morning to say shed curbed her wheel (very minor thankfully) she's only had the car since Tuesday :tearsofjoy:

That's made my mind up for definite about letting her loose in the S3!

Why does the S3 not have this clever diff?

I think it only works with torsen 4WD and not haldex

It'll work with an open centre differential too, and in fact would probably be even more effective under power with centre diff-less 4wd like Haldex, but I imagine there's a number of more compelling reasons it's not fitted;

1/ they don't need too - most people haven't clue how or why 4wd works, let alone which one is "better".
2/ it's not exactly small, and that's a ****** big lump of whirly bits to house under the boot floor.
3/ doesn't exactly look cheap either...
4/ world beating agility and balanced handling doesn't seem to be what Audi aimed for with the S3 (Or if it is, they missed it by a country mile). They seem to think there's some inate value in a sense of "Audi-ness" in the cars. (As in the quiet sophistication of the cabin, rather than nose heavy understeer).
5/ until the Focus RS came along and upped the game they were getting along just fine by flogging Haldex and pretending it was a direct descendent of the mythical Ur Quattro.

Does make you wonder what they have in store for the next gen S3 though...

For me, the S4 lacks visual impact, S3 Saloon on the other hand, is pretty smart looking.

Can't argue with the S3 Saloon looking the part. Although to be honest I'd drop it like a lead weight for the S4. Had a play around in one last week and it's like a more mature upmarket big brother. Would have to be the Avant though. And Glacier white as I refuse to be asked to spend a couple of hours preening over it with snow foam etc. Whites a lazy colour to keep clean. Oh and did I mention Magma red seats :wub:
