Would catch can help to reduce smoking?

I'm resigned to the fact that my engine is worn (S4). Haven't had chance to get to confirm what's wrong yet, but fair bit of blue smoke after a long overrun - so I'm assuming the worst (bonus if it's not). Otherwise the car is fine, so I'll be looking for a replacement engine when I can justify it.

In the meantime the smoking is a little embarrassing, so I'm wondering if something like a catch can would make any difference? I'm not a mechanic so would appreciate some advice from someone more experienced.
 
Catch can's only remove the oil vapour in the breather system (pcv), which is created from blow-by (all engines have this) which is known as crankcase pressure.
If your valve stem oil seals have gone & your leaking oil in to the cylinder this way then a catch is of no use, if your rings are worn then a catch can might (& that's a very long shot) reduce the smoke.
Give the pcv system a clean out & replace the pcv valve, worth a shot as they do fail.

Burning oil usually has three culprits as stated in the previous post by Jonni3, valve stem oil seals/guides or piston rings or the dreaded PCV . A compression test and a leak down test will let you know the condition of the piston rings, if they are okay it's down to the valve stem seals/guides or PCV.
Have you thought about renewing the piston rings, hone the bores and have the valve stem seals replaced (or heads rebuilt) rather than replacing the engine. At that point you would be wise to do the timing chains unless you have already done them.

PCV and pipes all look quite new, although this will be the first port of call, I'm not getting my hopes up. Compression test will follow to get a basic idea of things - just need to find a bit of time to get around to it.

I'm obviously not a mechanic and will be relying on someone to do the work. I've already spoken to a few places and most have advised that it's going to be a fair amount of time and money sorting anything like that. Time is a bit of an issue - I kinda need to drive the car, and i's also been mentioned that possibly they can't be honed due to the way they are made? Not sure on the specifics, but I'm had similar from a few places.

I can however get a 'newer' engine relatively cheaply and get it dropped in - appreciate that this may come with it's own problems which I'd need to watch for.

Little bit stuck with which way to go and obviously while everything is out, I know it's probably a good idea to look at doing tensioners, clutch, DMF, etc... so It's not going to be cheap and something that I'll need to plan for. This is why, just for now I was thinking about trying to cover up the embarrassing smoke signals I'm leaving sometimes.
