Hi, just a quick question is the 8V S3 known for having what i would describe as a notchy gear change, this is more noticeable in second and thrid gear.

Its not a definate mehcanical issue just different in second and thrird than the other gears.

Thanks

I would say yes, but then I was spoiled by previously owning the gearshift that generated a thousand motoring journalist cliches.

I will say that you do get used to it though, and can't recall the last time it caught my attention.

Thanks for the replies, i have owned an 8P S3 in the past and i would say this is by far more evident with this car than the previous model.

I would have expected a slicker gear change but like i said it doesnt sound like an issue just feels a little notchy.

Cheers

I have a 2016 8V manual and yes the gear box is not the best and certainly not what you expect in £30+k car. If I could go back to before I ordered I would have gone with a DSG 100% (and I never ever thought I would say that). I am having intermittent issues now, not sure if its gearbox related or turbo related or even clutch but when I am in higher gears 5th and 6th and accelerate hard at around 2 to 3 thousand RPM the RMP gage shoots up without the speed going up, boost bar fills up too without the expected speed increase and then drops back down and then the speed picks up - sounds terrible and its embarrassing. Totally ruining the enjoyment of the car at the moment.

I get an occasional notchiness going 2 to 3 but think its more to do with my timing/coordination of the change and my ability to fully depress the clutch pedal rather than any mechanical issue

Sounds very much like the clutch to me... although I'm certainly no expert!

Yeah I was thinking that but I didn't think that clutch slip would be intermittent???
Also when it does this sometimes the system gets confused by what gear its in (very odd for a manual and especially when you have been driving fine in the same gear for minutes before) - I am in 6 but it flashes to say in another gear and recommends to move to 6th.

That particular fault has clutch slip written all over it. Clutch slip can start off intermittently, but doesn't usually get better. It does get more expensive to repair though, so it might be worth booking it in now while you just need a clutch kit, rather than later when you need a clutch kit and a flywheel.

I am having paintwork repaired with Audi next week, called them today to get this looked at the same time. Fingers crossed it's not too expensive!

Well I had intermittent clutch slip so I'd say you might be needing a clutch soon @Adamshambles
