As ever really enjoyed my visit to Edinburgh Audi... S3 went in for MOT and had an advisory for new brake pads plus discs... discs at 19k miles? Is that right? I mean I do enjoy the occasional spirited drive but don't use the brakes unnecessarily. Quoted £55o for new front discs and pads, I may as well use that for a deposit on a new S3! Unless I'm naive...

Have to love dealer pricing :tearsofjoy:

I changed my own discs and pads on the R32 (front and reae) and it cost me £270, thatbwas for Pagid which I believe VW use anyway.

On a performance car like yours driven enthusiastically it is possible

19k is mental, you must have a seriously heavy right foot or Audi are trying to pull a fast one.

My car has done 32k and will be needing front pads soon, so 19k is ridiculous for a set of discs and pads. I'd get a second opinion elsewhere if I was you.

TRW are the OEM for vag.

If you go on Audi fixed price servicing online, it states that discs and pads are £475 I believe?

I'd expect pads at 19k, not discs. Maybe at 30k for discs.

Ah OK, was told by a few people the MK5 R32 (2006) used Pagid as OEM. Either way, was a hell of a lot cheaper than letting VW do it!

Fixed price servicing only applies to cars over 3 years old though. I agree that 19K does sound high, even if driven fairly hard.

19k? Have you had the pads changed before this? If so, it's possible as Porsche recommend 2 pad changes to every disc change. Even so I managed 45k on my discs.
If not ask the dealer if pads are harder than discs.

I was told pads at 60% worn at my 36k service. On that basis I'm hoping they'll get to 50k and I'll get the discs done at the same time! :)

All depends how you drive and whether it's mainly on open roads or stop/start in cities. I've seen brake pads completely worn out after a single track day whilst other people drive gently on open roads can make them last 70k miles. The friction material is around 11mm thick when new and ideally pads should be changed at about 3mm. Wear sensors normally kick-in at around 2mm.

Oh right I see, my service centre seem really good for pricing (£155 for S3 oil change), so I'd try and push for the £475.

I've changed lots of discs and pads in my time, nice easy job but I'm not sure if it's best to get Audi to fit them history wise :/ I will be a long way off getting pads or discs anyway, haha.

That does seem really early for a disc change... I seem to remember doing 70k miles on my first set of discs when I owned a 2004 Civic Type R. Different car I know, but I drove that very hard!

As previously mentioned... get a 2nd opinion.

There is another possibility. If you are the second owner of the car it could have been clocked.

That's a cheery thought...

@Bayzoo Did they say exactly what had happened to the discs? Being worn out at 19k is a bit odd, but being corroded or unevenly worn due a sliding caliper binding can happen. I've had discs and pads changed (on another vehicle) at c.9000 miles, because the backside of the disc was badly corroded for the reason above.

I recently heard that someone was told that their pads needed changing, they went for a second opinion and were told the pads had another 12,000 miles worth of life in them! A lot (not all) service centres offer bonuses if the person who does your service/MOT upsells!

The advent of increasingly long service intervals means that if the tech makes a judgement that your pads/discs/tyres/clutch/ashtray might not last another year/12 or 15 thousand miles to the next service, he will recommend replacement on that basis. It's not dishonest per se, but it does leave a lot of scope for "interpretation"...

Believe it or not I had to change my front discs and pads myself and it it cost me £400 just in parts from TPS getting the original discs and pads. That was with a 20% trade discount aswell!

Just had a quick look after putting my reg in:

Ha clocked? I am the 2nd owner...

Didn't realise I'd had all these replies my notifications ain't working.

Well I'm definitely going to get a 2nd opinion - I'd be going to an indie anyway not paying these prices. Funnily enough they did suggest an s tronic fluid change as well the time before I was in. I'm convinced they just make it up as they go along??

By the way... is it still possible to clock a car?

I'm on 26k mles and been flagged by Audi for new discs and pads in a few k more. £1300 for mine though :-/

To be honest... although undoubtedly the RS3 is a stunning car, this was my main reason for opting for the S3. I know performance isn't the same and the sound certainly isn't, but I just thought £ for £ the S3 was a better proposition. Don't get me wrong, if you can afford it and things aren't a stretch (which it would have been for me at the moment) then it's clearly not an issue.

Still would have expected more mileage from the discs than that.

Yep on a slightly different level keeping them on the road! Wife has S3 and no where near the expense of the RS3.

My front disks lasted 19k kms., replaced with a set of DBA T3 rotors with slighly better pads for 2/3rds of the cost of the standards rotors - the delar wanted $1700 aus

I did mine myself on my old A3. Spent less than £100 on parts (I'm not bothered about getting what was originally on there) and the brakes still worked very well!
