My car has developed a really annoying rattle from behind the dash, somewhere between the virtual cockpit and the central vents / pop up screen......... driving me up the wall especially as the car is only 5 months old.
It just "chatters" away constantly and sounds like a loose cable hitting plastic or similar.
I'll obviously be booking it in and getting them to come out in the car withme to hear it but anyone any ideas or had similar?
Dreading Audi taking the dash out and creating more rattles.

i feel for you bud....but unfortunately have no idea what it could be :)
hopefully you get it sorted without adding any additional niggles....in the meantime crank that B&O up lol

I get a rattle seemingly behind the pop up screen mate, it mostly happens when the cars interior is pretty cold..... Along with a few more lol but av kinda given up and just turn the music up....l have never handed my car over to Audi for anything especially to deconstruct the interior which in my opinion leads to other rattles and problems, but hope you get it sorted though

Mine had a chatter rattle from around the front dash area! Eventually traced it to the cup holders. The wee retractable grippers inside the holders was rattling. A bit of WD40 spray and it stopped. Always find that rattles tend not to come from where you actually hear them!

Thanks mate but kick a man when he's down lol........... I've no B&O, one of my regrets after having it in A5 and S5 previously. What was I thinking :sob:

So true and Mrs Bairn no use as any time I ask her to listen she claims she can't hear anything which makes me even more grumpy
I'll have a better look at the weekend, cheers for the heads up @Scottyg

I'm with you on the dismantling thing. Always feel, especially with a dash, that it'll never be the same once removed again. But the thought of listening to this noise, which seems to be getting worse, for the next couple of years will drive me demented mate.

@Audi Bairn I have this rattle, I thought it was coming from behind the VC at first. I think it's coming from under the steering wheel, where the trim meets the knee airbag. Funny thing is, if I put my foot hard down on the foot rest, it stops. Audi are having a look for me when mine goes in on Tuesday. Really annoying. Worst thing is, sometimes it stops! I bet it won't rattle when it's with them!!!

On mine the area around the front speaker on the top dash makes a fairly high pitched vibration when I accelerate hard which is strange. It's a bit intermittent but fairly frequent, think I'll have to eventually take it in. Might just be something lose from the speaker cover or summit i dunno.

Ask Mrs Bairn to take the wheel and see if the noise changes position. If so, it is probably mid point from both locations. Also move your head towards the floor and then up also.
I shudder at the thought of complete dash removal, but there are access areas to many parts of the dash that do not require complete removal.
Here is a video of an instrument display removal, it is pretty simple.

If you can identify the suspect area. The Audi tech may have a good chance of a simple resolution without drastic surgery on your dash, just take out an air vent as an example.

Hope you get it sorted mate.

On a funnier note, I thought I had a rattle which seemed to be coming behind my VC. Was driving me round the bend! After putting my ear against everything and heavy pushing on plastic, I found it was my sunglasses case rattling in my door card! :whistle2:

Like @Scottyg said, it may be coming from somewhere else like in my example :)

Try taking a clip of it occurring on your phone. I'd did this to support an MMI screen renewal & although you could barely hear the noise they did accept the clip as proof of the intermittant fault (that was Soton Audi too btw).

Humm... good idea. I'll have to get the wife to hold it whilst I'm driving...

(EDIT: The phone, nothing else lol)

Aye, usually what happens with me is the rattle stops on the morning I'm taking it in to Audi.
I'll take them out for a spin on some of the rougher road surfaces around Stirling and keep it in Dynamic to firm everything up.

Cheers for this, I'll have look tonight buddy.
Mrs Bairn driving my car!?!?!? :scared2:

I've just got this image of her driving, getting pulled over and me appearing from under the dash and trying to explain what I was doing down there lol

You are correct though. Noises can appear to be in different locations depending on where you're sitting.

Must be a common thing! I get a rattle at 2000rpm when the car is cold and it seems to originate from the pop up screen. After some investigation it was found to be coming from the four little spring grips in cup holders, even though a cup was wedged in there, if you move them just right the rattle will disappear but it's a PITA.

Funny you mention the pop up screen. Last night driving home the rattle only appeared once the car had heated up but (after nearly crashing twice by fiddling about with checking areas to see if I could stop it) I randomly tried driving with the screen down and it seemed to disappear. But will try a few times to see if that was coincidence as the road also got smoother at that point...................

I could hear a little rattle on the drivers side this morning, only heard it a couple of times so far not every time I drive - turned up the B&O, didn't hear it again :tearsofjoy:

Lol... it's a pain though. I don't expect a 3-4 month old car worth over £40k to rattle... especially an Audi. Part of what attracted me to the car was it's reputation for build quality and I'm not as impressed as I thought I'd be. I don't actually think it's any better than other VAG products to be honest.

Any update on the pop up screen being the cause? Im getting the same..

Thanks.

A couple of times when I've heard a rattle, I've put a bit of light pressure on the top of the screen with my hand and it's stopped but comes back.
Usually it's the wifes keys, the wifes jacket, the wifes handbag, the wifes purse......................... you get the idea

I get you. It's a complicated mechanism with slot of metal so it's bound to happen, quite easy to remove and I'll have a wee look.
