what are peoples thoughts on this diesel ban thing, apparently the government are going to pay diesel car owners that have cars 10yrs or older off to get rid of them for a more eco friendly vehicle, be it an electric car, hybrid, petrol or just a younger diesel, apparently there going to pay you upwards of £6k to scrap in your pride and joys, this is annoying I've spent 4 years paying off the finance on my A3 and now I've nearly payed it off im going to have to scrap it in? correct me if I'm wrong or if my facts are somewhat miss guided. so what are people thoughts?

It's not a diesel ban and you don't have to scrap your car. The diesel scrappage scheme is aimed at removing older diesel cars from the road. It's upto you if you want to take part and scrap your car taking the money they give you to buy a brand new "greener" car. They did the same thing with petrol cars back in 2009 , 2010 didn't they.
That scheme you had to have owned the car more than 12 months and it had to more than 10 years old.
It's a shame we sold the wifes 2005 1.4d Yaris about 6 months ago and got a new petrol polo so we may have been able to take part in a scheme like this.
But there was absoultely nothing wrong with the Yaris, never did anything less than 60mpg and cost £30 a year to tax with Toyota reliability.

I just didn't know how to word it tbh I know it ain't a ban, if you don't scrap your old diesel the road tax is going to go through the roof making the choice for you if you ask me, my issue is I spent 4 years paying my finance off to have to scrap my car cus I won't be able to afford the price the road tax is going to be, so I'm going have to finance another car because I won't be able to afford to buy another car right out, it might go differently closer the time if it happens, but at the moment I'm not looking forward to it.

They aren't going to go stupid with road tax on diesels. They are trying to get rid of older euro 3 cars without DPF's etc .
But as you say most people driving around in a 10 year old car don't swap it for a brand new one due to the costs.

this is just what I heared people talking about, forcing people to give up there older diesels for a more eco friendly thing, my cars a 54 plate no DPF so guessing I'm going to have it would be one of the ones chosen for the scrap :/ I dunno was just a thought n wanted to see other people's views on it.

Think your panicking over nothing, they can't force you to give up your car, mines a 54 plate as well, just going to keep driving & enjoying it.

no there wont force you just charge you more to drive it as in some cities/towns will either charge you too drive through or make you take a differnt route.

My next car will be another diesel. There much cleaner now with Euro6 and Adblue. Although, the new Octavia VRS 230 may turn my head!!

I've been looking at some petrol cars in my price range just incase and haven't found anything with as much torque as my A3 and is as good on fuel per gallon.

The only cars I've looked at so far are Focus ST 185 Diesel and the Golf GTD! Summer will be spent test driving!

I've been looking at going back to petrol even when I said I'd never go back, but may just go for a newer diesel. I dunno time will tell.
