I had my car valeted 4 weeks ago and the valeter somehow managed to get some dash cleaner inside the MMI display screen; now it's just a series of coloured lines, but does change/respond when you use the controls. You can actually see the liquid behind the screen because when you wipe it, you create visible streaks behind the screen. I hoped it would dry out but no sign of any improvement.

Nobody seems to be able to help with this - Audi have quoted me £572+VAT PLUS FITTING to replace the screen entirely, but in my view shouldn't the unit be sealed anyway so something like cleaning the dash shouldn't affect it's operation?

Any suggestions, or do I just have to take it to Audi and pay whatever bill they charge?

I would personally take it to the valet place and present them with dealer's quote. They messed it up, they should fix it.

To clean any of the display's it is advised to apply cleaner on the cloth, never directly on the display.

It may be silly but PC's call centre solution can rule out liquid damage. Disconnect the car's battery and reconnect it after few minutes.
There is also mmi refresh method by pressing sequence of buttons but you probably need to ask around for it.

Worst case scenario, I would attempt to replace it myself. It isn't rocket sience and doable on the driveway.
Check out B5nut member and he's brilliant thread of a car rebuild. He covered there how to replace and upgrade whole mmi system.

Assuming your car is latest C6?

Thanks for your reply. I don't think they overdid the valeting really, I think they'll understandably say that it's not their fault if the screen isn't sealed?

It's an old-shape 2011 so not sure if this affects your answer?

Sealed unit doest justify their work. They should he careful enough not to damage your car or it's components. If it was working before you dropped the car off to them, it should when you pick it up. If it isn't, someone done something not right.

If it's the C6 chassis, B5nut cover replacement in he's thread.
There are 2011 A6 but on the C7 platform and may be same or at least similar but don't know for sure.
This guy is a genius as for all nitty gritty stuff with electrics and what not. He'll definitely advise what second hand screen to get and how to tackle it, if feeling up to it.
